SC adds 59 entities to investor alert list in 1Q

KUANTAN: The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) added 59 names to its Investor Alert List in the first quarter (1Q) of this year, said chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi. He said this move is part of ongoing efforts to combat the increasingly rampant scams, alongside blocking fraudulent websites and social media pages. "In 2024, we added 273 names to the Alert List, and in the 1Q this year, we added another 59,' he said during his opening remarks at the launch of the Bersama InvestSmart@Pahang 2025 programme. The event was officiated by Pahang Investment, Industrial Development, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Mohamad Nizar Mohamad Najib. Mohammad Faiz added that the SC also collaborates closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to block these deceptive sites. "Last year, we blocked 153 websites and 261 social media pages. In the 1Q, we blocked 29 websites and 91 social media pages. These numbers show how much illicit activity we are fighting daily,' he said. As of May 2025, he said, the SC had received 1,218 complaints and enquiries about scams. Mohammad Faiz also reminded the public to be cautious of scams that claim to be Shariah‑compliant, using religious sentiment to gain trust. Bersama InvestSmart@Pahang 2025 is a three‑day programme starting today, bringing together government officials, capital market industry players, and regulators under one roof as part of the SC's investor outreach initiative. More than 40 exhibitors are participating in the event, themed "Bijak Labur, Hidup Makmur'. - Bernama

Shifted out of Karnataka Lokayukta post, IPS officer seeks anticipatory bail

Bengaluru: Senior IPS officer Srinath Mahadev Joshi approached the special court for Lokayukta cases Wednesday, seeking anticipatory bail, days after being transferred out of his post in the anti-corruption institution. His move comes in the wake of Lokayukta police pasting a notice at his residence, summoning him for questioning in a corruption investigation. The court has directed Lokayukta police to file its objections to the bail plea by Thursday. Joshi, who served as Lokayukta SP (city wing) for more than two years, was recently shifted out of the post. Around the same time, Lokayukta sleuths arrested dismissed police constable Ningappa G alias Ningappa Savant, 46, from Chitradurga, on allegations of making extortion calls to govt officials by posing as a representative of top Lokayukta officials. According to a Lokayukta press release, Ningappa allegedly routed the extorted money into 13 cryptocurrency wallets held in his name and in those of his relatives. Lokayukta police also stated they were examining reports that some officials within the institution may have colluded with Ningappa in targeting govt officers for extortion. "We will file our objections Thursday. Instead of approaching the court, he could have simply responded to the notice and appeared before us for the investigation," a senior Lokayukta officer said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Meanwhile, the high court Wednesday stayed the June 15 notice issued by Lokayukta police summoning Joshi. Justice SR Krishna Kumar granted the stay but allowed the investigation on the other accused to continue. Joshi, in his plea before HC, contended that the notice served on him lacked essential information, such as details of the FIR or reasons for summoning him. He alleged that the Lokayukta authorities acted in concert to curb his constitutional rights, prompting him to seek judicial relief. Joshi has maintained his innocence, denying any involvement in the extortion case. In a related development, Justice Krishna Kumar also heard a petition filed by Chandrakala, wife of Ningappa, challenging the legality of her husband's arrest. The hearing has been adjourned to Thursday. The counsel for Lokayukta police submitted that the grounds for Ningappa's arrest were indeed provided, though no acknowledgement was obtained. They also claimed that the petitioner, Chandrakala, was present during the arrest. However, Chandrakala's counsel argued that CCTV footage would reveal the true sequence of events. He claimed that Chandrakala had visited the Lokayukta office on June 2 and met inspector general Subramanyeshwara Rao. "She even entered her name in the visitors' register and it should be visible on CCTV footage. At the time, Ningappa was inside the office, but she was not allowed to meet him," the counsel said. At this point, the judge noted that the court had not yet reviewed the CCTV footage submitted by the petitioner. Before adjourning the hearing, Justice Kumar remarked orally that if the allegations are proven true, it might warrant invoking the Supreme Court's ruling in the Vihan case, which could lead to an order for Ningappa's release.

Grant on offer for potential developers of Glasgow's Egyptian Halls

Glasgow City Council is considering buying the rundown A-listed halls — by architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson — on Union Street, where the upper floors have been lying empty for decades. It is investigating a possible compulsory purchase order (CPO), which could then see the celebrated property transferred to a developer to bring it back into use. Council officials are preparing a development brief which will seek proposals from interested parties. It was previously revealed a consortium, including the publisher of the List magazine, with plans for a food market and hotel are keen to take on the halls. READ MORE: Here's how much taxi fares in Glasgow could rise under new proposals The building is currently owned by two companies — Union Street Developments and Union Street Properties — both run by Dundee businessman Derek Souter and his partners. They will also be invited to submit proposals to the council — and are able to sell the property voluntarily at any point. Council officials previously reported a bid from an 'interested party at a figure in excess of an independent valuation' had not been accepted. Cllr Ruairi Kelly, SNP, the council's convener for built heritage, is set to present a report to the city administration committee on Thursday which asks councillors to approve a £150,000 grant. It states an 'initial grant' of £150,000 towards the costs incurred by the developer would be made available in 'recognition of the importance of the Egyptian Halls to the fabric of the city centre' and the council's commitment to 'the built heritage of the city'. READ MORE: Plans approved for 410 student housing rooms in Glasgow's Anderston The money would be paid at 'the appropriate point' based on agreed milestones during the renovation, refurbishment and re-use of the halls. Cllr Kelly's paper comes after councillors supported a recommendation to investigate the use of CPO powers in February. The development brief is expected to be issued this month, and will give a period of 12 weeks for proposals to be submitted. Officials will then evaluate proposals against a criteria which will include how they intend to retain and use the building, previous experience, timeframe and deliverability and funding. A preferred proposal could then be selected, with the council promoting a CPO to buy the building for the chosen party. According to a council report from February, the plan would be for the council to enter a 'back to back agreement' with the developer, which would include obligations to have planning permission, show reasonable attempts to voluntarily buy the property and an undertaking to 'meet all of the council's costs including compensation payable as a consequence of the CPO'. Cllr Kelly previously said CPOs can be 'lengthy and complex' but it would be 'the first major step towards the repair and reuse of this beautiful building'.
