Letters to the Editor, June 10, 2025
Tuesday letters Photo by Illustration / Toronto Sun CHEW ON THIS While watching the hockey playoffs, I've noticed the players' mouthguards are constantly hanging out of their mouths. The players seem to enjoy chewing on them. Aren't the guards intended to protect the wearer's mouth/teeth? What's the use of having a mouthguard if it's not worn properly? It's like wearing a jock strap on your knee. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Create Account Tom C. Newell Niagara Falls, Ont. (It's akin to Linus and his security blanket) LAW AND DISORDER Re 'Disreputable ruling' (Brian Lilley, June 3): The world is watching in shock as Donald Trump tries to turn the United States into a fascist state by systematically destroying the public's trust in the mainstream media and the judicial system. Trump's unhinged tweets attacking judges and their rulings are potentially leading to a constitutional crisis in that country. To read Lilley's attacks on Justice Renu Mandhane's recent ruling makes one feel 'here we go again,' only this time in Canada. Disagreeing with a ruling is fine — that's what appeals are for. But using language such as 'flimsy,' 'sullied' and 'outrageous' is inappropriate and does permanent harm to our system of law and order. Disagreement is one thing, but Lilley's rant is not. While acknowledging the breach of the right to be presumed innocent is an error, Lilley glosses over the handcuffing of a person who is only being charged with a traffic offence. Jim Dandy Niagara Falls, Ont. (Your argument is flimsy and outrageous) GRINDING HIS GEARS Re 'Where's the beef' (Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, June 6): A very good read on the Canadian beef industry. While he brings up some very good points, a more direct approach would be to put up a timeline, starting in 1990, showing what the farmer got paid per pound for the cow and what a pound of hamburger cost. Go every five years or so. It will show where the money is going. Spoiler alert, it is not the farmer. Possum-sized robot aids South Burlington sports fields
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – Since last year, the South Burlington Parks Division has used a GPS-guided miniature robot to paint its fields for sports and mark lines. The robot even has a name – 'Linus'. The City of South Burlington wrote in a Facebook post, 'Linus the line-striping robot can mark a soccer field in about half an hour, freeing up its human coworkers for mowing and other maintenance.' The City has put the robot to work at Veteran's Memorial Park in advance of practices, games, and other events. UVM nurses practice at state-of-the art 'virtual hospital' By contrast, the Gold Country Soccer League in California estimates that a human painter would take twice that time just for a touch-up and longer for a whole new painting from scratch. Fields need to be repainted as often as once a week during regular use, and painting all the lines for a football field is even more complex and time-consuming. The robot, a specialized model known as a Turf Tank, can paint any of over 120 patterns entered into its customized software. It can also estimate how much paint it will use in its operations in advance. The company claims the robot's precision means it uses as little as half the amount of paint that would be needed to complete the painting manually. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
