Libyan Pilgrim Dies in Makkah During Hajj
A Libyan pilgrim passed away in the holy city of Makkah while performing the sacred Hajj pilgrimage, according to an official announcement made by the Libyan Government of National Unity on Saturday. The deceased, identified as Mohamed Saleh Al-Forti, was 63 years old and part of the Hay Al-Andalus Hajj coordination group. The Libyan Hajj Mission confirmed that he died as a result of heart muscle weakness while on pilgrimage in the holy lands. His death was met with deep condolences from the Libyan authorities and fellow pilgrims, who expressed sorrow over the loss during this spiritually significant journey. Libya's General Authority for Hajj and Umrah had previously announced the completion of all preparations for Libyan pilgrims, especially for the stay at Mount Arafat. The facilities included climate-controlled tents for rest and overnight stays, shaded areas for relaxation between rituals, mobile medical clinics, rapid response transport for urgent health cases, and fully equipped sanitation services. These arrangements aimed to provide comfort, safety, and health support throughout the intense and physically demanding days of Hajj. Meanwhile, the Emergency Medicine and Support Center reported that medical services have been provided to 646 Libyan pilgrims so far. Its clinics, stationed across the holy sites, continue to operate throughout the pilgrimage, addressing both routine and emergency medical needs to ensure the well-being of all participants. The Libyan Hajj Mission extended heartfelt sympathies to Al-Forti's family and prayed for mercy upon his soul. His passing serves as a solemn reminder of the spiritual weight and physical challenge of the pilgrimage, a journey that, for many, marks the culmination of a lifetime of faith and devotion. Protesters in Tripoli Reject US Migrant Deportation Plans to Libya
Dozens of Libyans gathered in Martyrs' Square in central Tripoli on Friday to protest against reports suggesting that the United States may deport migrants to Libya. The demonstrators raised placards rejecting any attempt to relocate deported migrants from the US to Libyan territory. Protesters described the move as a violation of national sovereignty and a threat to national security, amid growing public outcry. Chants filled the square, calling on the Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU) to issue an official clarification regarding the alleged plans. Many voiced fears that the reported deportations could destabilise the country and worsen its already fragile security situation. Protesters also demanded an investigation into what they believe may be secret agreements between foreign entities and Libyan actors to facilitate the transfer of deported migrants. Activists warned that such arrangements could expose Libya to renewed migration pressure and political exploitation. The protest comes amid widespread controversy fuelled by international media reports claiming that the US government is preparing to send migrants, including some with criminal records, to Libya aboard military aircraft. The reports have triggered condemnation from human rights groups, Libyan officials, and international observers. No official comment has yet been issued by the GNU regarding these allegations, although several Libyan figures, including army and government representatives, have denied any involvement or agreement with the United States on this matter. The issue has ignited fierce debate in political circles and on social media, with many Libyans concerned about the potential implications for the country's security, reputation, and already strained resources. Libya's government rejects US migration deportation plans
BY Libyan Express May 07, 2025 - 23:32 Updated: May 07, 2025 - 23:33 Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah The Libyan Government of National Unity has formally denied the existence of any agreement with the United States regarding migrant deportations to Libya. In an official statement, the government noted that 'unauthorised entities operating outside Libya's legitimate governance structures may have entered into arrangements' but emphasised that such arrangements do not bind the Libyan state legally or politically. The statement affirmed Libya's position against the use of its territory for migrant deportations without proper authorisation, stating it would defend its sovereignty on this matter. Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah reinforced this stance on social media, writing that 'Libya refuses to be a destination for migrant deportations under any circumstances' and adding that agreements by unauthorised parties have no authority for the government. According to international media reports citing American officials, the Trump administration may begin deporting migrants to Libya as early as Wednesday. When contacted, neither US nor Libyan authorities provided official confirmation of these plans.
