Oilers' Evander Kane blasted for snubbing Stanley Cup handshake line
Article content From the earliest levels of youth sports, you're always taught two things: Have fun and respect your opponent. Evander Kane apparently has some brushing up to do on the latter. Article content The Edmonton Oilers winger, who has endured more than his fair share of controversy during his NHL career – both on and off the ice, reportedly skipped on the traditional handshake line on Tuesday night after his team was eliminated from the Stanley Cup Final, giving the championship to the host Florida Panthers. Article content Kane's absence was noted on the TNT broadcast after the Panthers' 5-1 victory in Game 6 and confirmed by several hockey reporters on social media later. Kane was caught slashing the star winger on the arm after the whistle and then following him across the ice to land another blow before officials stepped in. Evander Kane hissy fit to end the series #LetsGoOilers | #TimeToHunt — Hockey Daily 365 l NHL Highlights & News (@HockeyDaily365) June 18, 2025 Article content It wasn't the first time in the series that Kane was sent to the showers early. In Game 3, Kane was booted from the Panthers' 6-1 win after slashing Carter Verhaeghe in the face while he was on the ice. The Oilers winger received a game misconduct penalty after a review and subsequently was ejected. Article content 'They seem to get away with it more than we do,' Kane said after that game. 'It's tough to find the line — they're doing just as much stuff as we are.' Kane's non-return to the ice for the handshakes had hockey fans on social media up in arms over the lack of class shown for skipping the display of sportsmanship, with many calling him a 'sore loser.' 'Evander Kane choosing not to be in the handshake line is perfectly on brand for him. Dirty, classless player,' one user wrote on X. 'Leave it to Evander Kane to be classless to the end,' a third user wrote. Kane has yet to comment on why he was absent from the handshake line on Tuesday night. Kane and the Oilers also reportedly are at the centre of an inquiry over the team's use of Long-Term IR salary cap relief, after he missed most of the season before returning for the playoffs. According to Frank Seravalli of the Daily Face-off, the 'NHL plans to continue to examine the Oilers usage of LTIR salary cap relief for forward Evander Kane. The NHL may require more information to satisfy itself that the Oilers complied with the CBA. He also noted that the league is 'deliberating on next steps' and 'there is the potential for retroactive punishment if the league finds the spirit of the CBA was violated.' Through his 15-year NHL career, Kane has been at the centre of several controversies ranging from assault and harassment charges, to allegations of sports betting and gambling debts, as well as claims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Panthers vs Oilers 3-4: Florida has unusual collapse as Edmonton take lead in Game 1 of NHL playoffs
The Florida Panthers, who had been nearly flawless in the playoffs under coach Paul Maurice, suffered a rare collapse in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Edmonton Oilers. The Panthers, who had been dominant when leading after one or two periods, let a 3-2 lead slip away, ultimately falling 4-3 in overtime on Wednesday night. Florida, defending their Stanley Cup title, had been unbeaten in 31 consecutive playoff games when holding a lead at the intermission break. But the Panthers' strategy of playing conservatively backfired as the Oilers stormed back with three unanswered goals, including a dramatic overtime winner by Leon Draisaitl. Draisaitl sealed the victory with a power-play goal, finishing off a centering pass from Connor McDavid at 19:29 of overtime, moments after Tomas Nosek was penalised for delay of game. 'We've been really good all year at not sitting back with the lead, and for whatever reason we sat back tonight,' said Sam Bennett, who had scored twice, including a franchise-record 12th postseason goal. Despite the Panthers' early control of the game, they were outshot 24-8 in the final period and overtime, and Maurice pointed to a lack of competition on key plays. 'I think we had some real good pressure. They get it back and then there were some plays we didn't compete,' Maurice said. 'I thought we were a little safe with the puck.' Coach Knoblauch spoke with the media after tonight's #Oilers overtime win in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, discussing the goalie interference challenge, Ekholm's effort & Kapanen's performance & more.@Enterprise | #LetsGoOilers — Edmonton Oilers (@EdmontonOilers) June 5, 2025 The loss marks a rare setback for Florida, who had not trailed in a series since their second-round loss to Toronto earlier this postseason. They are now 8-3 on the road this postseason and will need to regroup ahead of Game 2 in Edmonton on Friday night.

Connor McDavid ends NHL trophy superstition after Game 5 victory over Dallas Stars and fans are standing with him
Image via Bob Frid-Imagn Images Connor McDavid, the captain of the Edmonton Oilers, has finally led the team to win against the Dallas Stars in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs Western Conference Final. While the Oilers' fans are all excited about the win, Connor McDavid is going viral for the way he broke a 'curse' after winning Game 5 against the Dallas Stars. Campbell Bowl after winning against the Dallas Stars. After Connor McDavid lifted the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl, he spoke about it and reflected on how the Edmonton Oilers did not touch the trophy last year and yet lost the Stanley Cup Finals to the Florida Panthers. Connor McDavid said, 'It's pretty obvious I think. Don't touch it last year, you don't win. Touch it this year, hopefully we win' and fans are here for it. A fan commented, 'Last year, they didn't touch it and ended up losing. This year he is trying a different approach', while another fan wrote, 'Oilers didn't touch it last year, lost. Florida touched it in 2023, lost. Florida didn't touch it in 2024, won. The best and most meaningless superstition in sports and I love it.' A third fan commented, 'Staring into the soul of the camera too, jobs not finished', while another user wrote, 'BS w/ that superstition! The result is determined by how great someone plays or lucky is! #LetsGoOilers 🇨🇦' For the unversed, the NHL superstition is that teams prefer not to touch or lift the conference championship trophies as there is a certain belief that the team would end up losing the Stanley Cup Finals. However, the Edmonton Oilers believed in this superstition last year and did not touch their conference championship trophy but unfortunately, ended up losing the Stanley Cup Finals. Back in 2022, the Colorado Avalanche touched the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl and also ended up winning the Stanley Cup Finals that season. For the Edmonton Oilers, they are all ready to face the Florida Panthers but some fans are worried if Zach Hyman's absence might have an impact on their performance.
