Champion Lakes artist wins PerthNow x Jacksons art prize

A Champion Lakes artist who is certainly no stranger to winning over the hearts of her peers has come out on top in the PerthNow x Jacksons 70th Anniversary art prize. Experienced watercolourist Catherine Kelley delighted judges with her celebration of friend, fellow artist and Jacksons Cannington store manager Leesa Padget, excelling in interpreting the competition's brief: what her local Jacksons store and the community means to her. The judges — Jacksons general manager Scott Boercamp, renowned WA talent Leon Pericles, sculptor Georgia Zoric, and PerthNow Local editor Arylene Westlake-Jennings — were enamoured by how Kelley captured her relationship with Padget in the mixed-media artwork. Your local paper, whenever you want it. Leesa by Catherine Kelley. Credit: Supplied 'The stand-out stories for me over the judging of this competition came from the love and appreciation of the Jacksons staff over the decades,' Zoric said. 'Leesa was the embodiment of that thread of memories. A whimsical and thoughtful piece putting the staff at the centre of the Jacksons success story.' Mr Boercamp said the submission demonstrated the appreciation Jacksons' customers have for its staff. 'Our staff are so important to us, their knowledge, their passion for art and creativity; it's what makes Jacksons unique,' he said. More than 100 guests, including prominent Perth artists and Jacksons' key suppliers and partners, watched on as Kelley was presented with a $5000 cheque for the stunning piece at an exclusive soiree at Sailing for Oranges in Fremantle on Tuesday evening. 'I met Leesa at the Armadale Art Society about 20 years ago, I would guess. We were mutual artists at the society and I was president for a little while, and you can't help but get to know like-minded people.' Kelley said of her entry. 'I was inspired by her work and what she does and her hair — it's just a nest — and I couldn't help but represent that concept. And I personally love birds, so it all fell into place.' Special mentions were also made for several submissions in the art prize, including Autumn Colours by Stef Hayward, Messages & Meanings by Dorothy Davies, and Pigeons by Giorgina Pitchen, which delighted all four judges with its whimsical take on the storefront of the flagship Jacksons in Subiaco. The PerthNow x Jacksons collaboration celebrates the brand's 70th year in business, from its beginnings as a small showroom on William Street in Perth to becoming an integral part of the WA and NT art communities. Mr Boercamp reflected on the significance of the milestone, sharing his excitement for the future. 'Reaching 70 years is an incredible achievement, and I believe our commitment to providing high-quality products, which we source locally and globally, and our team's instore expertise has been a big part of our success,' he said. 'I also want to congratulate Catherine on her well-deserved win. We hope to continue this art competition as an annual tradition to further celebrate creativity in our community.'

Romesh Ranganathan reveals plans to 'take a step back' from his career

Romesh Ranganathan has revealed he is taking a step back from his busy TV schedule - but he promises fans he's not quitting for good. The comedian, 47, is known for fronting The Weakest Link as well as Sky's wildly popular Rob & Romesh Vs alongside Rob Beckett. Appearing on Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4, Ranganathan told host Lauren Laverne he was taking a breather to spend more time with his family - while vowing not to quit television for good. He said: "There's no game plan. I'm just doing whatever feels good - I'm taking a step back." Ranganathan also talked about his past career as a maths teacher before he found fame, and paid tribute to those still working in classrooms. He said: "There's not been a single day of my comedy career that's even come close to the stress I felt as a teacher. "I cannot speak highly enough of teachers and teaching and how I loved that job." Born and bred in Crawley, Ranganathan studied maths at Birbeck University and went on to teach the subject in his hometown. He was working at a secondary school in the borough when he met his wife Leesa in 2009, who was also a teacher. The couple went on to marry and have three sons, Theo, Alex and Charlie. Ranganathan is a big fan of hip-hop and previously performed freestyle rap under the name 'Ranga', as well as hosting a podcast Hip-Hop Changed My Life. But it was his dry comedy style and deadpan delivery that saw him make the leap from clubs to television, with appearances on Have I Got News For You, 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Would I Lie To You. Ranganathan also hosts a regular show on BBC Radio 2. Outside of showbiz, Ranganathan co-owns Coughlans Bakery in Oxted, Surrey. Last week, he delighted customers by serving coffees and pastries behind the counter on Wednesday. He was dressed for work in the bakery's branded hat and hoodie, and was filmed handling orders and taking payments. The funnyman was also on hand to pose for selfies and talk to fans, as well as recording video messages for them to share with friends. Ranganathan enjoys his random shifts at the bakery. In a BBC interview in February, he said: "It was nice to meet people. I just wanted to get involved. The crowds are better than my tour show." In April, Ranganathan criticised his local council over a school placement 'shambles' after claiming his youngest son was not offered any of his preferences for secondary school. He posted a video on Instagram taking aim at West Sussex County Council for placing his youngest son in a school 'on the other side of town', rather than the one that his elder son attends. Ranganathan also added that he had emailed the council six times with no response, and after a local MP got involved was told that an investigation by the council found the placement to be 'satisfactory'.

Romesh Ranganathan reveals plans to step back from career in shock move - but insists he is not retiring

Romesh Ranganathan has revealed he's hitting pause on his hectic showbiz schedule - but insists he's not quitting for good. The funnyman, 47, best known for his hit BAFTA-winning series Rob & Romesh Vs, says he's taking a breather to spend more time at home. Speaking on Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4, Romesh told host Lauren Laverne: 'There's no game plan. I'm just doing whatever feels good - I'm taking a step back.' But fans don't need to panic, as the Crawley-born comic made it clear he's not packing it in for good. Romesh also opened up about life before comedy, reflecting on his old job as a maths teacher and how tough it really was. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'There's not been a single day of my comedy career that's even come close to the stress I felt as a teacher,' he said. 'I cannot speak highly enough of teachers and teaching and how I loved that job.' Romesh met his wife Leesa in 2009 when they were both working at a secondary school in Crawley. The pair tied the knot and went on to welcome three children, Theo, Alex, and Charlie – with the comedian having tattoo of his sons' names. Romesh shot to fame with his deadpan style and has become a household name thanks to stand-up, panel shows, and hit series with pal Rob Beckett. Alongside his hugely successful comedy career and Radio 2 programme, he also co-owns Coughlans Bakery in Oxted, Surrey. And just last month, he delighted fans with his hands-on approach to running the business as he served customers coffees and pastries from behind the counter on Wednesday. The down-to-earth star didn't shy away from pausing his duties to pose for selfies and chat to fans, as well as record video messages for those who missed out. In May delighted fans with his hands-on approach to running the business as he served customers coffees and pastries from behind the counter He was fully kitted out in the bakery's branded cap and hoodie, with videos and photographs from his shift showing him collecting orders and processing payments. His fans were quick to take to social media to heap praise on the comedian for taking the time to speak to all his fans during his surprise shift behind the counter. It is not the first time he has done a stint working in the bakery chain, as he has also thrilled fans with shifts in its branches in Dorking and his hometown Crawley. In February, he told the BBC of his visits: 'It was nice to meet people. I just wanted to get involved. The crowds are better than my tour show.' Romesh, who is a vegan, had initially partnered with the bakery to create a vegan treat, called the Ranga Yum Yum, before going on to become a co-owner. The delicious snack was made a permanent fixture on the menu and Romesh was partly responsible for owner Sean Coughlan setting up a branch in his hometown. Sean previously said of Romesh's involvement: 'Romesh is working behind the counter because he wants to know more about the business. He loves it.' 'He is so down to earth, humble and genuinely one of the nicest guys I ever met,' he added.

20+ of the Best Memorial Day Mattress Deals Still Live: Your Last Chance to Save on a New Bed

Memorial Day may be over, but several top mattress brands are still offering extended sales. If you're thinking about upgrading your sleep setup, this is your final opportunity. These leftover deals won't last much longer. Hey, did you know? CNET Deals texts are free, easy and save you money. CNET's sleep experts have spent years testing mattresses to help you find the best options for your budget and sleep preferences. Right now brands like Casper, Purple and Nectar are still running major discounts. You'll find deals on everything from memory foam and hybrid mattresses to bedding and sleep accessories. We'll keep updating this page with the latest prices, so check back often before these extended Memorial Day offers disappear. Best overall Memorial Day mattress sales Brooklyn Bedding Brooklyn Bedding's beds are known for their quality and affordability, so it is notable that its prices have dropped 30%. CNET's best overall mattress, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature, drops below $999 for a queen with this sale. The Aurora Luxe, our favorite cooling bed of all time, is just less than $1,700. Down from $2,265, this is an excellent price for a bed that will help hot sleepers rest better. The 25% off sale is sitewide with the code MEMORIAL25. Details 25% off sitewide with code MEMORIAL25 See at Brooklyn Bedding Close Leesa Leesa's ultra comfortable mattresses are some of my favorites. The Leesa Sapira Chill, our pick for the best luxury mattress, is on sale for $1,584. That's more than $679 in savings. It's still expensive but this is a good deal for the quality, especially because Leesa is adding a free sleep bundle that includes two pillows and a microfiber sheet set. Details 30% off select mattresses + free sleep bundle See at Leesa Close Nectar Hands down, Nectar does some of the most generous sales of all the mattress brands, which is good because some of the newest Nectar beds can be pricey. For Memorial Day, Nectar beds are up to 50% off, and bundles are 66% off. That means you can get the Nectar Classic Hybrid for $799 instead of $1,531. If you want to update your whole bedding setup, add the optional bundle for only $179. It includes a sheet set, two cooling pillows and a mattress protector. The all-foam model of this bed is only $649. Finding quality queen mattresses for less than $1,000 can be difficult, so this sale is big if you're a fan of dense memory foam. Details Up to 50% off mattresses + 66% off bundles See at Nectar Close Helix Helix's early access Memorial Day sale is 25% sitewide with a free bedding bundle if you buy a Luxe or Elite mattress. Here at CNET, we're big fans of Helix mattresses, especially the comfy pillowtops on the Luxe models. The Helix Midnight Luxe, which I recommend to just about anyone who wants a medium mattress, is down to $1,780 with this sale. Admittedly, the Luxe beds are on the more expensive side. You can drop a tier to the core collection for more affordable beds. The Helix Midnight is $999 right now. If you choose from the core collection, you'll miss out on the free bedding bundle that includes a sheet set and mattress protector. The bedding bundle's value isn't more than the difference between the two prices so I don't think the free offerings are enough to move the needle for you. I'm currently testing the Helix Frame, which is on sale for $187. I highly recommend it for people who want a no-fuss bed frame that is easy to assemble. Seriously, it took me less than 5 minutes to put it together. Use the code MEMDAY25 to cash in on these savings. Details 25% off sitewide + free bedding bundle with select mattresses with code MEMDAY25 See at Helix Close Saatva For Memorial Day, Saatva is running deals where you can save up to $600 off a mattress. The amount off will depend on the total of your purchase. A $950 to $1,999 purchase will save you $200, plus an extra $100 off if you get an adjustable base or upholstered bed frame with the mattress. You won't get that $600 off unless you spend more than $4,500. It's not the most generous sale we've seen from Saatva, but it's still a nice chunk of change off the price of a luxury bed. The Saatva Classic, our favorite firm bed, is only $1,799, $300 off of the usual price. If you're looking for a bed specifically for back pain, the Saata Rx is reduced to $3,049 for a queen. Details Take up to $600 off See at Saatva Close Casper Casper mattresses are up to 30% off for Memorial Day. The savings will vary by bed. Casper's best-selling all-foam bed, the One, is on sale for only $799 for a queen. That's 20% off. The more expensive the beds, the higher the discount. The Casper Snow cooling mattress is 30% off, which drops the price to $1,745. Details Up to 30% off mattresses See at Casper Close Bear Bear is a brand that makes affordable beds that will surprise you with how comfortable they are. The Memorial Day sale from Bear makes the beds almost impossible to pass up. There's sales of 35% off sitewide with two free pillows when you buy a mattress. The Bear Original mattress is one of my favorite all-foam mattresses for the price. With the sale, you can get a queen for only $649. The Pro Hybrid is only $1,113, a great price for a hybrid bed. Details 35% off sitewide + 2 free pillows + 40% off mattresses with code MD4TY See at Bear Close DreamCloud I'm a big fan of DreamCloud beds and I helped my brother buy one during the Presidents Day sale. Little did I know the Memorial Day mattress sale would be even better. I'm not sure I've ever seen a sale with up to 60% off. The DreamCloud Classic all-foam bed is only $799 for a queen, and the hybrid is only $649. If you're a pillowtop lover, I highly recommend DreamCloud. Details Up to 60% off mattresses See at DreamCloud Close Best Memorial Day sitewide mattress deals Plank Plank is offering a 25% off sitewide sale right now. That's a great sale for people who want extra-firm mattresses. The Plank Firm, a flippable all-foam mattress, is easily the firmest mattress I've ever tested. Right now, you can get it for less than $1,000. If you're looking for a hybrid bed, I'd recommend the Plank Firm Luxe, also on sale for just under $1,300. Use the code MEMORIAL25 for this sale. Details 25% off with code MEMORIAL25 See at Plank Close Avocado Avocado beds are easily the best organic beds out there. Besides the eco-friendly construction, the Avocado Green mattress has the most green certifications of any brand. Avocado's Memorial Day sale is up to 20% off mattresses, bedding and furniture. That drops the cost of a queen Avocado Green bed to $2,099. Use code HONOR10 for 10% off select eco organic mattresses, pillows and bedding. Use code HONOR15 for 15% off select green mattresses. This sale means you can get a queen Titan Plus mattress for only $937 with the code MEMORIAL25. Finding a quality bed for less than $1,000 is hard, so this is an excellent sale for heavy back and stomach sleepers. Details 25% off sitewide with code MEMORIAL25 See at Titan Close Nolah Nolah's 35% off sitewide sale includes two free pillows with your mattress purchase. The Nolah Evolution is my favorite mattress for those looking for a soft mattress. The pillow top is one of the plushest options out there and a queen is currently on sale for $1,383 with two free pillows. This sale is across Nolah's beds, frames and bedding. Details 35% off sitewide + 2 free pillows See at Nolah Close Dreamfoam Budget brand Dreamfoam from Brooklyn Bedding is running a 25% off sitewide Memorial Day sale with the code MEMORIAL25. The beds are priced well for the budget tier, so this sale only sweetens the deal. The Dreamfoam Doze, our favorite cheap firm mattress, is only $180 for the 7-inch model. The 11-inch model, which I recommend for side sleepers, is $251 for a queen. These beds aren't going to knock your socks off with special features or cooling covers, but they're the most affordable online beds we've tested. Details 25% off sitewide with code MEMORIAL25 See at Dreamfoam Close Naturepedic Through June 2, Naturepedic is offering 20% off sitewide with the code MEMORIAL20. That means the Naturepedic Serenade mattress is only $1,599. Organic beds tend to be more expensive so it's not a bad price for an eco-friendly bed. Birch Natural is our pick for the best organic hybrid mattress, and you can get it for $1,399 during this sale. While 25% is in line with a lot of the other sales, the two included pillows are a $149 value, so that's a nice addition. Details 25% Off Sitewide + 2 Free Eco-Rest Pillows with code MEMDAY25 See at Birch Close Purple Purple offers up to $700 off mattresses and bases for Memorial Day. The amount you save depends on the mattress and base. For example, the Purple Restore hybrid is $300 off. The sale also varies by base, like the Premium Smart Base, which is $300. Put those together, and you'll get closer to $600 off. You don't have to buy a base to get the discount on the mattress but you have to get a mattress and a base to receive the discount on the base. The sales don't stop there, as Purple is offering 30% off bedding, pillows and more. Details Up to $700 off mattresses + bases See at Purple Close Layla Up to $200 off is Layla's typical holiday sale, although the two free pillows do sweeten the deal. You can now snag organic mattresses, bedding and bases from My Green Mattress for 10% off. The Natural Escape organic hybrid bed is only $1,529 for a queen during the Go Green Mattress Sale. The Pure Eco Organic Kids Mattress is not included in this sale. Details 10% organic beds, bedding and bases See at My Green Mattress Close Is Memorial Day a good time to buy a mattress? Memorial Day is a good time to buy a mattress if you're in the market for one. Some of the sales are generous, especially the ones that throw in extra pillows and bedding. I've been doing this long enough to notice sales trends across brands. For instance, Saatva usually peaks around $600 off mattresses, while Nectar has been known to mark 50% off. Most big names offer sales within a specific range, so if you can't afford a mattress right now, don't sweat it. There's always another holiday coming. Should you wait until Prime Day to buy a mattress? No, it's not necessarily better to wait until Amazon Prime Day in July to buy a new mattress. While some brands will offer deals around that time, nearly all mattress companies offer discounts around Memorial Day. Additionally, upcoming tariffs may increase the prices of mattresses across the board, so if you want to snag a new bed for a lower price, significant sales are happening now. Our sleep and deals experts monitor the web to uncover the best discounts and help you save big. Check back, as we update our deals pages often.

Leesa founders launch new luxury mattress brand with cutting edge construction to suit all sleepers

Tiami, a new luxury sleep brand from the previous co-founders of Leesa, has launched with the flagship Tiami Mattress, a premium design that aims to put refinement at the forefront of luxury sleep. Many of our favorite luxury mattresses earned that title not only due to their high-quality build but also the variety they offer sleepers. Whether it's different firmness levels, optional cooling or support upgrades, they provide comfort for almost every customer via choice. Release date: May 2025Sizes: 5 (twin XL to Cal king)Type: HybridFeel: Medium-firmPrice: from $1,995 at Tiami But the Tiami takes a different approach. Jamie Diamonstein, co-founder and chief product officer, describes it as the "simplest" mattress he's created, explaining he believes "simplicity is the very essence of luxury." Despite that, the responsive feel of the Tiami is aimed at all sleep styles, while the hybrid mattress has been crafted to target a variety of common sleep problems, from aching arms to restless partners. The best mattresses we've tested often claim to deliver comfort for all sleep needs but most come with a few weak points. Is the Tiami truly the Goldliocks of mattresses — just right for everyone? Simple luxury does come at a premium price, with the Tiami Mattress starting at $1,995 (currently the website notes mattress sales are likely to be rare.) The Tiami Mattress: from $1,995 at TiamiThe Tiami Mattress bucks some luxury bed trends by keeping the design intentionally simple but the price is similar to other high-end premium designs. A queen is currently priced at $2,995 and Tiami has implied sales will be rare. However, signing up to the mailing list might deliver you a discount. The Tiami Mattress has a premium pricing structure and five sizing options; from twin XL to Cal king. Below is a break down of the current prices at Tiami: This is towards the high end of the premium price bracket. In comparison, a queen Saatva Classic mattress has an MSRP of $2,099 and in regular Saatva mattress sales this often gets reduced. However, the pricing is similar to hotel mattresses. For example, a queen Ritz-Carlton mattress costs $3,440 at full MSRP, currently reduced to $2,580. Like the Tiami, the mattresses used in hotels aim to appeal to all types of sleepers (and, therefore, all guests) using an often simple yet high-quality build. For the premium price tag we might have expected better benefits from Tiami. The 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty are the industry average for a mattress, but considering competitor Saatva offers a 365-night trial and forever warranty (plus free white glove delivery), Tiami falls short in this luxury area. Diamonstein describes the creation of the Tiami Mattress as finding "the right combination of state-of-the-art components and fine-tuning them to work together seamlessly." At first look, the Tiami Mattress has a similar build to many of the designs you'll find in our best hybrid mattress guide, pairing two foam layers with a spring base. In comparison, Avocado's latest organic luxury mattress contains up to 17 layers of materials. But Tiami emphasizes it's not about the complexity of the build but, as co-founder and CEO David Wolfe states; 'refinement'. So let's look closer. The upper comfort layer of the Tiami Mattress consists of Energex material, an open-cell style foam that's designed to deliver responsive cushioning and pushback — we predict a feel similar to latex foams, moving quickly to adapt to your shape for consistent support. Beneath this sits a more traditional memory foam layer, to enhance the pressure relief provided by the Energex material. Next comes the support layer, and here's where Tiami sets itself apart. The unique double-pocketed system pairs 7-inch coils with 3-inch 'Energex Pods'. A dual-coil system should keep the entire body lifted while providing additional, targeted support where you need it most, with the quick response material adapting whenever a change in position alters your support needs. This support is further enhanced by the reinforced coils around the perimeter, creating a sturdy and stable feel right up to the corners. While many luxury beds are sold in different firmness levels, there's only one Tiami mattress available. Remember, this mattress is about "simplicity." However, Tiami claims by combining materials with soft, medium and firm feels, the Tiami Mattress can suit every sleep style and body type. We're excited to put this luxury simplicity to the test. Can the Tiami Mattress compare to the five-star luxury of the top-rated Saatva Classic mattress?
