Ireland suffer comprehensive defeat to Australia

IRELAND SUFFERED A 6-1 defeat to Australia in the teams' second FIH Pro League encounter in Antwerp today. Mark Tumilty's men were beaten by the same scoreline against the Aussies on Tuesday. A decent start saw Ireland level with the current FIH Pro League title holders and the world-ranked number five side in the early stages. Advertisement Lee Cole scored from a penalty corner to equalise, after Nathan Ephraums opened the scoring. But Jeremy Hayward soon restored the Kookaburra's lead through a penalty corner of their own, before Ephraums extended his side's advantage. Craig Marais capitalised on a defensive error to score his side's fourth before Davis Atkin added a fifth after Jonny Lynch had been yellow-carded for a collision in the middle of the park. Ky Willott made it six in the final quarter, but the game had long since become a formality. The victory moves Australia to second in the FIH Pro League table behind leaders The Netherlands. 'We let ourselves down playing with 10 players for large parts,' Ireland captain Kyle Marshall said afterwards. 'A couple of green and yellow cards that we have to be disappointed with ourselves for receiving. We know that teams will hurt you when you are playing with one less player. 'We definitely applied ourselves well during those periods, but the longer you are in those periods, the more you are open to conceding goals, and little mistakes compound.' Ireland play their final two FIH Pro League matches of the 2024-25 season against Spain on 21 and 22 June at 9.30am Irish time. Both games will be available to watch live on the TG4 player.

Australia unpick Ireland in second FIH Pro League encounter in Antwerp

Ireland 1 Australia 6 The current FIH Pro League title holders, Australia unpicked a changed Ireland side in their second encounter in Antwerp. After the sides went into the quarter one break locked at 1-1, with Ireland's Lee Cole scoring from a penalty corner, Australia pushed on, scoring five unanswered goals to storm to a seventh FIH Pro League win. An early penalty corner after just over one minute gave Australia the chance to pick up from where they left off in the teams' previous tie. A fine save from Kyle Marshall off the line denied the Kookaburras before the ball glanced an Irish foot, resulting in a second penalty corner. Ireland defended the second effort well to keep the game scoreless. A green card for Australia's Davis Atkin for a challenge on Johnny McKee gave Ireland a player advantage, which they used well to win their first penalty corner. Lee Cole's effort for the corner was saved. A break from Australia ended with a penalty corner, Jeremy Hayward's effort saved by Peter McKibbin on the line, but Nathan Ephraums was quickest to the rebound to sneak the ball under Jaime Carr and break the deadlock in the 11th minute. A positive start to the second quarter from Ireland saw them move the ball well into the circle for Jeremy Duncan to win a penalty corner, with Cole's effort again testing Australian goalkeeper Ashleigh Thomas. Fergus Gibson won another penalty corner for Ireland after beating his opposite player into the circle, with Cole flicking powerfully into the net to draw Ireland level. But Australia would respond, throwing an aerial into the Irish circle, with Ireland's Sam Hyland encroaching, resulting in a penalty corner for Australia. Jeremy Hayward restored the Kookaburra's lead from the set piece. Nathan Ephraums extended Australia's lead one minute later, capitalising on a rebounding ball in the Irish circle to slap into the roof of the net. Australia continued to apply the pressure in the closing phases of the first half, but Ireland defended well to keep the score at 3-1 in Australia's favour. Knowing they needed to respond quickly, Ireland stepped up their intensity, winning a penalty corner after two minutes. A miss-trap at the top of the circle meant Australia escaped unscathed. Australia mounted attacks of their own, the best of which resulting in a controversial penalty corner, which Jaime Carr batted away. A defensive error as Ireland tried to play the ball out of the back soon after gives Australia a chance at a shot on goal, which Craig Marais fired into the top corner. A yellow card for Jonny Lynch for a collision in the middle of the park gave Australia a five-minute player advantage, which they immediately used to add a fifth through Davis Atkin. Ireland tried to reduce the deficit in the final phases of the third quarter. Ben Walker came closest, reacting first to a save from a Ben Nelson shot to volley the ball off the crossbar. Fewer chances came for either side in the final quarter as the Belgian heat took the pace out of the game. Australia did eventually score their sixth, capitalizing on an Irish attack to counter and score through Ky Willott. A late penalty corner for Ireland with 30 seconds on the clock offered the team a chance at a consolation, with Mark McNellis' effort and Jeremy Duncan's follow-up saved. Australia came away as 6-1 victors and move to second spot on the current FIH Pro League table as they look to chase down leaders The Netherlands. Speaking after the game Ireland captain Kyle Marshall said: 'We let ourselves down playing with 10 players for large parts. A couple of green and yellow cards that we have to be disappointed with ourselves for receiving. We know that teams will hurt you when you are playing with one less player. We definitely applied ourselves well during those periods, but the longer you are in those periods the more you are open to conceding goals, and little mistakes compound.' Ireland will play their final two FIH Pro League matches for Season 2024/25 against Spain on Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22 at 9.30 Irish Time.

Deja vu as Ireland hit for six again against Australia in FIH Pro League

Ireland 1-6 Australia It was deja vu for Ireland in the FIH Pro League as they suffered a 6-1 defeat to Australia for the second day in a row. Reigning champions Australia had dominated Tuesday's encounter on route to a five-goal victory and they repeated the feat on Wednesday in the Belgian city of Antwerp, with Ireland adrift at the bottom of the 2024-25 standings. Ireland were level with the Australians early in the second quarter after Lee Cole scored from a penalty corner to make it 1-1, cancelling out Nathan Ephraums' opener. But the Irish side then succumbed to five unanswered goals from Ephraums, Jeremy Hayward, Craig Marais, Davis Atkin and Ky Willott as Australia stormed to a seventh FIH Pro League win which leaves them second in the table behind the Netherlands with three matches in hand. The result keeps Ireland ninth and bottom after playing 14 games and are 11 points adrift of eighth-placed India. "We let ourselves down playing with 10-players for large parts," said Ireland captain Kyle Marshall. "A couple of green and yellow cards that we have to be disappointed with ourselves for receiving. We know that teams will hurt you when you are playing with one less player. "We definitely applied ourselves well during those periods, but the longer you are in those periods the more you are open to conceding goals, and little mistakes compound." Ireland will play their final two league matches of the season against Spain on Saturday and Sunday.

‘Fulfillment' is a splendid novel by a rising literary star

Don't look now, but a colossal literary career is sneaking in under the radar. Three years ago, Lee Cole's splendid debut, 'Groundskeeping,' explored the impact of the 2016 presidential election on a divided Kentucky family. He is back with 'Fulfillment,' a companion piece and a colder, wiser novel for Trump 2.0, lit by an eerie glow. We have been here before and yet haven't learned anything, a country playing Russian roulette, a loaded pistol pressed against the chin.

Ireland stun Belgium for first win in Pro League

Ireland have stunned world number two side Belgium in the FIH Pro League in Antwerp. Goalkeeper Jamie Carr saved a penalty stroke in the first half before Louis Rowe and Lee Cole gave Ireland a two-goal advantage. Advertisement Nicolas De Kerpel responded for Belgium, however Cole landed his second penalty corner and 's side had enough to hold on despite Thomas Crols' effort. It is a first win in the 2024-25 campaign for Ireland and it came a day after Belgium ran out 5-1 winners in the first game between the sides. "It was nice to bounce back after yesterday, we were very disappointed [with the performance] as a team," said Carr. "I was happy to contribute a little bit to that. Defensively that was a much better performance, and where we wanted to be. "We beat Belgium twice [in Antwerp] last year, but we have been struggling to get over the line this year. It's nice to get a win on the board." Carr saves set up Irish win After dominating the game a day before against an Ireland side without a victory, Belgium were heavy favourites in Sunday's game and had the perfect chance to take the lead when Ben Ryder gave away a penalty. Advertisement However, Carr guessed correctly and denied his club team-mate Alexander Hendrikx to keep the scores level in the opening quarter. Ireland then took a shock lead early in the second half when Fergus Gibson worked some space down the right and he found Rowe, who smashed home to break the deadlock. Belgium immediately searched for a response and Carr was again called into action, but it was the underdogs who extended their advantage when Cole flicked home a penalty corner. The pressure from the hosts finally told when De Kerpel shot past Carr two minutes later, and the Irish goalkeeper denied Tom Boon as Belgium flew forward. However, some good work by Matthew Nelson allowed Cole to convert his second penalty corner of the match, and the Irish held on despite Crols' late effort.
