9 movies about fathers and daughters full of laughs, tears and everything in between

2. 'Father of the Bride' (1991) Above 'Father of the Bride' (1991) captures every father's struggle to reconcile his protective instincts with his daughter's independence Steve Martin's George Banks transforms the universal parental experience of 'letting go' into both comedy gold and genuine pathos. The engagement of his daughter Annie (Kimberly Williams) triggers an emotional maelstrom that's simultaneously hilarious and deeply moving, capturing every father's struggle to reconcile his protective instincts with his daughter's independence. George's journey from curmudgeonly resistance to tearful acceptance mirrors the arc that significant life transitions demand of parents themselves. The film's enduring appeal lies in its honest portrayal of how a daughter's milestones become a catalyst for her father's emotional recalibration. 3. 'CODA' (2021) Above 'CODA' (2021) depicts the courage required for both fathers and daughters to embrace change This Academy Award-winning film explores the poignant tension between family loyalty and personal aspiration through the story of Ruby (Emilia), the film's titular CODA—a child of deaf adults—who is also the only hearing member of her family. Her bond with her father, Frank (Troy Kotsur), transcends sensory barriers through pure emotional connection, culminating in the film's most moving scene where he asks her to sing while feeling the vibrations through her throat. This moment shows how love creates bridges across seemingly insurmountable differences, while Ruby's eventual departure to pursue music represents the necessity of supporting dreams that may lead children away from family. The film balances themes of duty, independence and the courage required for both fathers and daughters to embrace change. 4. 'I Am Sam' (2001) Above 'I Am Sam' (2001) questions what truly constitutes fitness for parenthood Sean Penn's portrayal of Sam Dawson challenges society's narrow definitions of parental capability, championing emotional connection over intellectual capacity. Sam's developmental disability becomes irrelevant beside his unwavering devotion to his daughter Lucy (Dakota Fanning), whose growing intellectual abilities create a touching role reversal that questions what truly constitutes fitness for parenthood. The heart of the film lies in its belief that love means more than intellect, as Sam's fight for custody forces us to reconsider how we measure parental worth. 5. 'Leave No Trace' (2018) Above 'Leave No Trace' (2018) shows the inevitable moment when children must venture beyond parental care Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie's quietly devastating performances explore the painful recognition that love sometimes requires separation. Will's (Ben Foster) PTSD-driven isolation conflicts with his daughter Tom's (Thomasin McKenzie) need for community, creating a heartbreaking tension between protection and growth. The film's power lies in its refusal to villainise either perspective—Will's trauma is real, but so is Tom's right to choose her path. Their forest sanctuary becomes a metaphor for the protective spaces fathers create, while Tom's gradual integration into society represents the inevitable moment when children must venture beyond parental care to discover their identities. 6. 'Hearts Beat Loud' (2018) Above 'Hearts Beat Loud' (2018) explores how fathers can honour their children's independence while cherishing moments of connection Nick Offerman's Frank discovers that music becomes the perfect language for navigating his daughter Sam's (Kiersey Clemons) impending departure for university. Their collaborative songwriting shows how shared passions can strengthen relationships, exploring how fathers can honour their children's independence while cherishing moments of connection. Frank's support for Sam's academic dreams, despite his own musical aspirations, exemplifies the selfless nature of paternal love. 7. 'The Little Mermaid' (1989) Above 'The Little Mermaid' (1989) embodies the classic struggle between protection and freedom that defines the dynamics of fathers and daughters King Triton's relationship with the adventurous Ariel embodies the classic struggle between protection and freedom that defines the dynamics of many fathers and daughters. His initial restrictiveness stems from genuine fear for her safety, yet the narrative's emotional arc hinges on his recognition that true love requires trusting his daughter's judgment. The animated film explores how fathers must evolve from protectors to supporters, learning that safeguarding their children sometimes means allowing them to face risks. Triton's ultimate sacrifice—granting Ariel her human form—represents the profound act of putting a daughter's happiness above his desires. 8. 'Definitely, Maybe' (2008) Above 'Definitely, Maybe' (2008) reveals how relationships can be healing when approached with openness Will (Ryan Reynolds) finds himself explaining his romantic history to precocious daughter Maya (Abigail Breslin), whose innocent questions become catalysts for deeper self-reflection. The film's clever narrative structure—presenting three potential mothers for Maya to identify—creates opportunities for both characters to understand each other more fully. Maya's curiosity about her father's past demonstrates how children often help parents process their own experiences, while Will's honesty about his mistakes models true communication. This charming exploration reveals how the relationships of fathers and daughters can be reciprocally healing when approached with openness. 9. 'King Richard' (2021) Above 'King Richard' (2021) explores the fine line between supportive guidance and controlling behaviour Richard Williams (Will Smith) embodies the complex figure of the ambitious father whose dreams intertwine with his daughters's destinies. His meticulous planning and fierce determination to shepherd Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena (Demi Singleton) to tennis greatness reflect both admirable dedication and potentially overwhelming pressure. This biopic explores the fine line between supportive guidance and controlling behaviour while acknowledging how Richard's vision ultimately empowered his daughters to achieve extraordinary success. This nuanced portrayal examines how paternal ambition can be both catalyst and burden, requiring a careful balance between pushing children toward excellence and allowing them space to develop their own motivations. Netflix is about to axe the highest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes

Sophie-May Williams Published June 11, 2025 3:36pm Link is copied Comments Calling all Netflix fans: you only have a few weeks left to watch arguably the best movie the streaming platform has to offer. Unfortunately, Leave No Trace, which currently boasts a rare, perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is getting the boot on June 30. The movie, which also tops the Rotten Tomatoes 100% Club ranking, was first released back in 2018 (Picture: Scott Green/Bleecker Street/THA/REX/Shutterstock) The thriller stars Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie as Will and Tom, a father-daughter duo who live an isolated existence in a forest in Oregon. Will, a veteran suffering from PTSD, teaches his daughter forest survival skills, from building fires to seeking out shelter. The pair rarely venture into the nearby town - only for basic necessities like food and water (Picture: Bleecker Street/THA/REX/Shutterstock) However, when a jogger reports Will and Tom to the authorities, they are arrested by park rangers and detained by social services. Thrust back into the real world, they must learn to adapt and conform to civilisation and society. While Tom is found to be exceptionally clever for her age, despite not attending school, her reintegration back into the community sees her learning new skills. As for Tom, the world he so desperately sought to leave behind engulfs him once more, which only exacerbates the symptoms of his PTSD (Picture: Everett/REX/Shutterstock) As the film develops, Tom learns that she can be happy outside of the woods, and encourages her father to try and do the same. But, this epiphany causes them both to realise that at some point, they must go their separate ways. Tom belongs in her own version of the outside world, while Will is desperate to return to his solitary lifestyle in nature, unable to move on from his past (Picture: Everett/REX/Shutterstock) With 252 Tomatometer reviews - which is the compilation of critics' reviews - Leave No Trace has the most positive testimonials of any film on Rotten Tomatoes with a 100% rating. It's also got a decent score of 78% on the Popcornmeter, where general viewers rate and share their thoughts on a film. Currently, this meter has over 5,000 ratings (Picture: Bleecker Street/THA/REX/Shutterstock) JD Duran from InSession Film spotlighted the performances by the lead actors. The critic said: 'Foster and McKenzie not only give great individual performances, but their chemistry together is stunning and it made for an emotional experience that few movies matched in 2018.' For Brittany Patrice Witherspoon from Pop Culture Reviews, the movie left a lasting impression. She said: 'The beauty of it all is while the characters find any means necessary to erase their existence from the world, they will surely find a way to creep into and leave a trace in your heart' (Picture: Bleecker Street/THA/REX/Shutterstock) Robert Roten of Laramie Movie Scope sang the praises of the director, Debra Granik. He penned: 'The writing and direction by Debra Granik is sharp and sure. This has the lean, spare look of a low-budget independent film, but it is emotionally rich and powerful.' Keith Garlington from Keith & The Movies said Leave No Trace 'struck a chord with [him] early.' He said: 'I could feel its emotional tug all the way till the end. It's not a movie deeply concerned with plot. Instead it is all about character' (Picture: Bleecker Street/THA/REX/Shutterstock) As for the Popcornmeter reviews, one person called it 'tragically brilliant or brilliantly tragic.' They added: 'You can't help but get invested in both characters and put yourself in their shoes. The father's desire to do right for his daughter but inability to stay still is tough to watch but you can't look away.' Elsewhere, someone else dubbed it a 'fantastic cinematic masterpiece.' However, unlike the critics, not everyone was enamoured with the film. Among the five-star reviews, plenty of people dropped one to two-star ratings, calling Leave No Trace 'confusing' and 'average.' Another said it was 'overly long and extremely boring,' while someone went so far as to call it a 'snoozefest' (Picture: Everett/REX/Shutterstock) Either way, movies are made to be subjective, so not everyone is going to have the same opinion. And isn't that what's so great about art? With that, there's only one thing left to do: cancel your Friday night plans and make your mind up for yourself. And, as Leave No Trace is literally about to leave the streaming platform without a trace, there's never been a better time to watch it. Leave No Trace is streaming on Netflix until June 30 (Picture: Everett/REX/Shutterstock)

Explore Thiruvananthapuram: Tips For An Eco-Conscious Vacation

Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, has beaches, hills, temples, and mosques all in one place. Because this city is so beautiful, many tourists try to visit it. Thiruvananthapuram's clean eco-friendly steps such as ecotourism, allows visitors to appreciate the wonders of nature around them. From saving the environment to helping the local people, an eco-friendly trip to this city does it all. You can find more tips on how to make and plan for such a vacation below. 1. Eco Friendly Hotels While on a trip, planning is almost everything. One of the best ways to offset carbon emissions is by booking hotels that have a verified eco friendly status. Make sure to choose from Thiruvananthapuram's list of eco-friendly homestays and resorts that utilize solar energy, participate in waste management, and conserve water just like 'The Raviz Kadavu' or 'Poovar Island Resort.' During your stay, seek places that meet these standards. Green Leaf and EarthCheck are two certifications to look out for, as these hotels are more likely to provide meals that have a smaller environmental impact such as food from local farms. 2. Use Public Transport or Hire E-Vehicles The mode of transport selected has the greatest effect on the environment within any area. You can skip private car rentals and opt for buses or CNG auto rickshaws instead. Furthermore, you can also use electric bicycles and scooters which are becoming fashionable in the area. While cycling around Thiruvananthapuram, you will be able to appreciate many places while keeping your carbon footprint low. It is simpler for tourists to embrace environmentally friendly travel because services such as Yulu provide bike rentals. 3. Enjoy The Environmental Splendors Without Causing Any Damage Attractions in Thiruvananthapuram include Kovalam beach, Ponmudi hills, and Neyyar wildlife sanctuary among others. These places must be visited and enjoyed with the Leave No Trace rules in mind. Always take reusable water bottles with you, do not throw away garbage and leave it littered around, and do not bother the animals. Nature walks with local guides are effective in providing information about the country's flora and fauna in a sustainable way. And instead of using a car to see the sights, go for quieter options like bird watching and trekking for less noise pollution and less disruption to the habitat. 4. Buy Products From Local Artisans And Businesses Eco tourism also involves boosting the local economy. Be sure to buy souvenirs handmade by locals instead of cheap imitations sold at stores. Check out places like Connemara Market or other handicraft emporiums for genuine Kerala coir mats, wooden carvings, and traditional jewelry. Eating at small family-run restaurants instead of international chains ensures your money directly benefits the community. Furthermore, the local small scale restaurants prepare authentic Kerala dishes using local fresh ingredients. 5. Join In Community Tourism Projects Community based tourism projects offer travelers the opportunity to interact and make a positive impact on the local people. Various projects like the Responsible Tourism Mission Kerala help connect the tourists to villages by offering farm stays and cultural programs. Engaging in such activities increases the understanding and respect residents and visitors have for one another. You may be fortunate to be engaged in some grassroots endeavors such as traditional crafts making, paddy farming, or witnessing a Kathakali performance. 6. Reduce The Use of Plastics Travelers are an integral part of combating plastic pollution, which has become a defining phenomenon of our age. Hence, before reaching the city of Thiruvananthapuram, ensure that you have cloth bags, bamboo utensils, and metal straws instead of single use plastic. Several restaurants and coffee shops in the city now encourage customers to bring their own cups or containers. In addition, it is also important to carry a refillable water bottle and see some places around the city that can allow you to fill filtered water. All of these practices ensure that you do your part in keeping Thiruvananthapuram's beauty intact. 7. Learn About Local Initiatives in Conservation Being aware of the environmental challenges that impact the region of Thiruvananthapuram is sure to make your travel a lot more responsible. The city has a number of NGOs that work around the clock to conserve endangered wildlife and rehabilitate them back to the wild. A case in point is the Chendamangalam rehabilitation center which houses and treats injured elephants, while the Agasthyamala biosphere reserve works on protecting lesser known species of plants and animals. You could volunteer with these organizations or even support them with donations. Even if you don't travel there, making other people aware of these initiatives leads to positive changes in the longer run. Bonus Tip: Understand and Follow Important Cultural Traditions and Customs Tourism doesn't have direct consideration on environmental sustainability, however, it is important culture is followed. When attending temples such as the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, ensure that you dress conservatively. Other practices, like removing shoes before entering temple premises, asking for permission when taking pictures of people, and so on, also require attention. Local customs are very important and once appreciated, goodwill follows, marking a cordial relationship between tourists and the locals. Conclusion In order to achieve a memorable eco-friendly vacation in Thiruvananthapuram, it is important to put an effort in planning from every facet of the journey. From choosing the right accommodation and transportation to daily activities and how to best interact with the locals. Employing eco-friendly means, engaging community projects, and lowering your carbon emissions, will guarantee an unforgettable holiday aligned with ethics. The captivating scenery and the friendly nature of the people in Thiruvananthapuram provides both sides of the coin, adventure and responsibility. So get ready, practice eco-friendly tourism, and go on a trip to this picturesque city with a positive attitude

Two Hikers Called 911 to Report One of Their Buddies Died. It Turns Out They Were Only Tripping on Shrooms

Two hikers in New York's Adirondack Mountains sparked a rescue mission over Memorial Day weekend because they ate psychedelic mushrooms, got lost, and were convinced their friend had died. The incident occurred Saturday on Cascade Mountain, a popular trail near Lake Placid, according to a press release from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. Two hikers had dialed 911, claiming the third member of their party had died. The pair also encountered a summit steward, who quickly realized they were in an 'altered mental state.' The Summit stewards are volunteers or staff members of the Summit Stewardship Program, which is a partnership between the Adirondack Mountain Club, the Adirondack Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. Summit stewards conduct research and trail maintenance, encourage Leave No Trace principles, and educate hikers about alpine ecology. Forest ranger Robert Praczkajlo responded to the hikers' call for help and escorted them off the trail, where an ambulance — and the New York State Police — were waiting. The friend who they thought had died also called during the rescue. Happily, authorities determined them to be alive and well, and they were helped back to their campsite by a forest ranger. It is illegal to grow or possess psychedelic mushrooms in the state of New York. Even as psychedelics are growing in popularity for both recreational and medicinal uses, first responders caution against tripping in the woods. The Canada-based volunteer group North Shore Rescue puts it bluntly: 'The combination of mind-altering drugs and being in the wilderness is a terrible and dangerous idea.' On Monday, a hiker at Virginia's Crabtree Falls fell to her death after crossing a safety railing to snap a photo. And in November, authorities rescued two hikers in New Hampshire whose cell phone batteries died on a 16-mile snowy hike on Mount Charleston. One of the hikers was wearing Crocs.
