Yankees Predicted to Trade For $66 Million All-Star Slugger, Fix Infield
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees' primary, healthy infield this season has featured Jazz Chisholm Jr. at third base, Anthony Volpe at shortstop, DJ LeMahieu at second base and Paul Goldschmidt at first base. The rotation between Goldschmidt, Ben Rice and Giancarlo Stanton at designated hitter and first base aside, the Yankees' infield has a few problems. For starters, Chisholm is a better defender at second base than in the hot corner. Also, LeMahieu's bat has not been up to par while he has handled a majority of the work at second base since he returned from injury. The Yankees should have options available on the trade block, but Hall of Famer Pedro Martínez predicted during a Bleacher Report livestream that the Yankees will trade for Eugenio Suárez of the Arizona Diamondbacks. BOSTON, MA - AUGUST 25: Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks points skyward as he rounds the bases after his three-run home run against the Boston Red Sox during the sixth inning at Fenway Park on August 25, 2024 in Boston, Massachusetts. MoreSuárez is playing on a $15 million club option this season, but will be a free agent once it ends. He signed a seven-year, $66 million deal before the 2018 season with the Cincinnati Reds. He was traded to the Seattle Mariners in 2022 before ending up on the Diamondbacks in 2023. Suárez was an All-Star back in 2018, but has proven to be a power threat over the course of his career. This season, he has a .237 average but is making up for it with 22 home runs and a .846 OPS. He has 298 career home runs. Adding Suárez would allow Chisholm to move back to second base and slide LeMahieu to the bench. LeMahieu has slashed .244/.330/.337 through 30 games. The Arizona Diamondbacks are in fourth place in the National League West, entering play on Friday. They could end up being sellers, and a player like Suárez would be a prime candidate to be dealt. Yankees' $90 Million 3-Time All-Star 'Obvious Guy to Be Dealt' Amid Losing Streak
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees were able to end a harsh scoring drought on Wednesday, but their losing streak grew to a concerning six games. After struggling against the lowly Los Angeles Angels for the third game in a row, the Yankees are searching for answers at the plate without a clear solution in sight. "You play 162, you're gonna hit a little rut like this," Aaron Judge said after the game, according to Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News. "But you can't give up. You can't mope about it." As the Yankees look to return to the World Series this year with better results than they had last season, time could be running out to make the kind of change that prevents a rut like this from persisting. And for ESPN's Buster Olney, there is a clear candidate to be moved off the team. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - APRIL 11: DJ LeMahieu #26 of the New York Yankees walks into the dugout before the game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on April 11, 2022 in... NEW YORK, NEW YORK - APRIL 11: DJ LeMahieu #26 of the New York Yankees walks into the dugout before the game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on April 11, 2022 in the Bronx borough of New York City. (Photo) More Elsa/Getty "Look, if you're thinking about possible change with this lineup, the guy to watch, no question, is DJ LeMahieu," Olney said on the "Baseball Tonight" podcast. "He's 36 years old. He turns 37 next month. ... I think part of the reason the Yankees put Jazz Chisholm at third base when he came off the injured list was they want to maintain flexibility in case they decide to make a change. LeMahieu would be the obvious guy to be dealt if they decide to do that." The Yankees could be searching for a right-handed bat to improve their lineup and the infield seems like the obvious place to put such an addition, as the team already has a logjam at designated hitter and in the outfield. But trading away LeMahieu to make room for a new face would be an ignominious end for the veteran after he signed a $90 million contract to join the Yankees. LeMahieu has been a three-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove Award winner and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner in his 15-year career, but his playing days could be numbered. He is slashing just .244/.333/.341 so far this season and consistently deals with injury setbacks. As a result, he might find himself on a new team by the trade deadline as the Yankees look to turn their offense around. More MLB: Mets' Francisco Lindor Makes Pete Alonso Contract Prediction

Yankees veteran infielders make two miscues that prove costly
Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free On another night of offensive woes, the Yankees also encountered some defensive slipups. When Jazz Chisholm Jr. returned from an oblique strain earlier this month, the Yankees had an infield dilemma. Rather than putting him back at second base and moving DJ LeMahieu to third, the Yankees asked Chisholm to go across the diamond due to his speed. Advertisement Nevertheless, on Tuesday night in the Yankees' 4-0 loss to the Angels in The Bronx, the Bombers saw two costly plays from each of them. If a pattern emerges, especially with a struggling lineup, the decision could be put into question. Additionally, it could pose the question as to whether or not the Yankees look around for a solution before the trade deadline. Advertisement In the top of the second inning, the Angels' Luis Rengifo singled on a ground ball to LeMahieu, who was unable to keep the ball in front of him as it slid under his glove and into right field. The miscue knocked in Logan O'Hoppe for an early 1-0 lead. Jazz Chisholm is unable to throw out Nolan Schanuel on a bunt single in the third inning of the Yankees' 4-0 loss to the Angels on June 17, 2025. Brad Penner-Imagn Images An inning later, with the bases loaded, Chisholm missed a ground ball that hit the edge of his glove, giving Taylor Ward a two-run single as Zach Neto and Nolan Schanuel scored to extend the Angels lead. Advertisement Following the tough innings, Will Warren went on to retire 11 straight batters, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone didn't seem concerned about the defensive gaffes. DJ LeMahieu, who made a defensive miscue earlier in the game, walks to the dugout after striking out in the eighth inning of the Yankees' loss to the Angels. Bill Kostroun for New York Post He thought LeMahieu nearly had it. 'He got to it, had a chance, it's gonna be a really good play,' Boone said after the Yankees were shut out a third straight game. 'I felt like he kinda secured it too and then it just kinda squibbed off his glove. So, obviously a tough chance. One that he almost got to and made. So, you know, touch chance.' Advertisement Chisholm did not answer questions following the game, telling the media he lost his voice. The one-time All-Star from the Bahamas moved from second base to the outfield while playing for the Marlins. After joining the Yankees in July 2024, he accepted the third base role with his new team. He thought that would be the end of his time playing third base. Nevertheless, prior to leaving his rehab assignment, he was told by the Yankees they would need him in the role yet again. LeMahieu has primarily played third base in more recent years of his career, but three of his four Gold Glove wins came from playing second for the Rockies in 2014, 2017, and 2018.

LeMahieu ejected for the first time as future in lineup becomes a bigger question
LeMahieu ejected for the first time as future in lineup becomes a bigger question originally appeared on Athlon Sports. DJ LeMahieu's streak of 1,651 career games without an ejection came to an end Friday in the 10th inning at Fenway Park, of all places. The moment felt out of sync with his steady, veteran presence—but maybe it also spoke to something deeper this season. Advertisement Entering 2025, LeMahieu has faced a rough ride. After returning from a left calf injury in mid-May, he's playing in just his second full season with the Yankees and is batting .279 with a .372 on-base percentage and .769 OPS over 68 plate appearances. Not bad for a 36-year-old returning from injury—but not enough to quiet growing whispers about whether he's still a key cog in a championship chase. New York Yankees second baseman DJ LeMahieu prepares to hit against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on June 1, 2025.© Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images Now add the ejection. After grounding out in extras, he told ump Jeremie Rehak, 'That was a brutal call.' When Rehak asked for clarification, LeMahieu repeated it—and was tossed. His first-ever ejection, and he admitted later, 'Of all the things I have said to umpires over the years, I was surprised.' Combine that with a recent calf strain and a battle to regain form, and suddenly that 'brutal' comment feels almost symbolic. LeMahieu isn't just pushing back on the umpire. He's pushing back against doubt, injury setbacks, and the internal clock ticking down on a two-time batting champion. Advertisement He's also hearing the clock of the trade deadline ticking on his career as well. He may not hit .364 anymore like in 2020, but he's still a leader who can spark things, and his quality of contact remains strong. This stretch, though, is proving pivotal. Can he shake off pains, drive, and maybe even a little extra edge to remind the Yankees why they leaned on him for four Gold Gloves and two batting titles? Yankees Trade Idea Would Poach 2-Time All-Star Away From Blue Jays
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees have gotten more production out of DJ LeMahieu this season than they probably expected after two subpar seasons. However, the team could still use an upgrade in the infield, and it's unclear if LeMahieu can sustain his .279/.372/.397 slash line. The Yankees could benefit from some better defense up the middle and a little more slug from their infield. Sports Illustrated's Kenneth Teape suggested the Yankees trade for Bo Bichette of the Toronto Blue Jays. "Jim Bowden of The Athletic has listed Bichette as a potential trade target for the Yankees, who are in need of an upgrade at second base or third base; whichever position they aren't deploying Jazz Chisholm Jr. at for the night since he can play either spot," wrote Teape. "The Blue Jays star would be a massive upgrade over DJ LeMahieu and Oswald Peraza, but Bowden does admit it is hard to envision division rivals making a deal of that magnitude, especially with both in the mix for postseason spots." TORONTO, ON - JULY 1: Bo Bichette #11 of the Toronto Blue Jays is tagged out at home plate by Connor Wong #12 of the Boston Red Sox to end the game in the ninth... TORONTO, ON - JULY 1: Bo Bichette #11 of the Toronto Blue Jays is tagged out at home plate by Connor Wong #12 of the Boston Red Sox to end the game in the ninth inning in their MLB game at the Rogers Centre on July 1, 2023 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. MoreBichette is a two-time All-Star and has led the American League in hits twice in his career. In 68 games, he is slashing .275/.320/.425. He had three consecutive 20-plus home run seasons before last season, which was the worst year of his career. This season started off slow in the home run department, but the 27-year-old has found his power stroke again. He has hit eight home runs since the calendar flipped to May. Adding Bichette and making him a second baseman would not only add some power to the Yankees' lineup, but it would also improve their defense and bench. LeMahieu going to the bench would be a move that moves Jorbit Vivas, most likely, to Triple-A. LeMahieu could be a better option than Vivas or Peraza as a pinch hitter late in games. The two holdups in the Yankees trading for Bichette would be the Blue Jays' record and the cost it would incur for the Yankees as division rivals. The Blue Jays are surging and are currently a wild card team. More MLB: Mets Could Still Trade Veteran Pitcher After Kodai Senga Injury News
