Egypt reduces number of banned dog breeds from 16 to 3 - Society
The Egyptian cabinet approved a new amendment to the Law Regulating the Possession of Dangerous Animals and Dogs, reducing the number of banned dog breeds from 16 to three.
The amended list of dangerous animals, published in the Egyptian Official Gazette (Al-Waqa'i' al-Misriyya) on 13 May, now only includes the Brazilian Mastiff (Fila Brasileiro), the South African Mastiff (Boerboel), and the Spanish Mastiff Presa Canario (Dogo Canario).
The bill passed in 2023 aimed to regulate the ownership of dangerous animals, enlisting several dog breeds as hazardous, along with wild and predatory animals, venomous insects, and reptiles.
When passed, the two-year-old bill sparked controversy, as dog owners and animal rights advocates vehemently opposed it and lobbied against the government action.
At the time, the banned dogs list included 16 popular breeds in the country, citing their perceived danger to the population.
These breeds were the Pitbull, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Boxer, Husky, Caucasian Shepherd, Bullmastiff, Doberman, Alaskan Malamute, Great Dane, Akita, American Bully, Alabai, Dogo Argentino, Cane Corso, and Tosa.
The recently approved amendment allows the licensing and registration of 27 dog breeds under the conditions set by the General Authority for Veterinary Services.
