James Gunn opens up about his favourite DC project which has "not been announced at all"

DC Studios co-CEO has many projects in the pipeline, with his 'Superman' releasing July 11, season 2 of 'Peacemaker' nearly wrapped for an August premiere, and the 'Lanterns' HBO series halfway through filming, reported Variety. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now However, Gunn is also working on a few TV and film projects, which he has not revealed yet. One project in particular, he kept very quiet because he didn't want anyone to steal the idea, Gunn said, "My favourite thing has not been announced at was one thing that I knew about from the very beginning, that when I pitched to David Zaslav what the DCU would be, I pitched to him, but we did not announce in that first meeting because I felt like it was too easy to rip off by another company. And so that's one of the main things. " Gunn said he'll "probably" direct one of his new mystery projects. "Well, I always leave saying I'm going to direct something till I'm actually done with the screenplay, and then I say, 'Yeah, I want to do this.' But it's probably what I will direct. Yeah, probably, to be totally realistic. Yes, probably," he said, reported Variety. The ace director shared that when a well-known actor pitched him a project, he told him he was looking for a "masterpiece." "I told it to one person who came in and pitched something that was an Elseworlds tale," he said. "It was a very, very, very famous movie actor. I said, 'It depends on how the screenplay comes it's a masterpiece, I'll make it, but it has to be a masterpiece.' And he is like, 'I don't know if it's a masterpiece.' He got all funny. He's still working on it, though. He is still trying to do it, so we'll see. Masterpiece might be pushing it, but it's got to be really great. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " Gunn didn't just tease upcoming movies. He also mentioned another "favourite thing" that's a TV project. "Then there's another TV show that's my favourite thing in all of this, that is hopefully getting made soon," he said. "It's just my favourite thing. And then there's the s--! I don't know what I'm allowed to say or not say, but there are a couple of other movies that are being written, one of which is in pretty good shape, another which is kind of closer to the start, but we feel positive about. And then there's a thing I'm writing, which I think it's okay. ... So what will be the next thing after 'Clayface' is not 100 per cent certain, but it's pretty certain," reported Variety.

James Gunn on why ‘movie industry is dying,' what ‘killed' Marvel and ‘The Batman' sequel's status

James Gunn has his own theory about why the movie industry is 'dying.' The filmmaker, screenwriter and co-head of DC Studios contends that the reason for bad movies is Hollywood's tendency to begin productions before screenplays are complete, he told Rolling Stone in a new interview. 'I do believe that the reason why the movie industry is dying is not because of people not wanting to see movies. It's not because of home screens getting so good,' Gunn said. 'The number one reason is because people are making movies without a finished screenplay.' That's why one of his main rules at DC Studios is that movies must have finished scripts before they go into production. In fact, Gunn just scrapped a project because the screenplay wasn't ready, he said. On the other hand, he described the scripts for the upcoming DC films 'Supergirl,' 'Lanterns' and 'Clayface' as 'so f—-ing good.' Before taking the reins of DC Studios in 2022, Gunn co-wrote and directed three 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movies for now-competitor Marvel Studios, which he said has been 'killed' by Disney's directive to increase output. 'We don't have the mandate to have a certain amount of movies and TV shows every year,' Gunn said of DC Studios. 'So we're going to put out everything that we think is of the highest quality.' During the interview, Gunn also addressed rumors that Matt Reeves' sequel to 'The Batman,' starring Robert Pattinson, has been axed. The film, which Gunn confirmed is still titled 'The Brave and the Bold,' has been delayed a year and is now expected in October 2027. 'That's the other thing I hear all the time — that 'Batman Part II' is canceled. It's not canceled,' Gunn said. 'We don't have a script. Matt's slow. Let him take his time. Let him do what he's doing. God, people are mean. Let him do his thing, man.' Finishing the scripts for the 'The Batman' sequel and 'Wonder Woman' are among DC Studios' top priorities, Gunn noted. Additionally, Gunn reflected on the 2018 scandal that saw him briefly fired from 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' when tweets resurfaced of him joking about pedophilia and rape. He said without that experience, his script for 'Superman' — hitting theaters July 11 — would have been much different. 'That opened the door for me to stop creating so that people would like me. That's downplaying it — so people would love me,' Gunn said. 'I think on some level, everything I had done came from a pleasing place.' When asked if he's worried about ever running out of ideas, Gunn didn't seem too concerned. 'If I do, then I'll go raise goats,' he said. 'I really am fine. There's a lot of directors who get worse as they get older, and I don't wanna do that. Or maybe I do — I don't know. It's like, if it runs out — it hasn't so far. But who knows?'

James Gunn Says the ‘Movie Industry Is Dying' Because Films Are Made Without Finished Scripts and Marvel Got ‘Killed' by Output Increase: ‘That Wasn't Fair'

James Gunn has stressed from the minute he took over DC Studios that no superhero movie under his watch would go into production without a completed script. Now, in a new interview with Rolling Stone, the filmmaker attributed the so-called dying film industry to Hollywood's fatal mistake of always making blockbusters before their scripts are officially completed. 'I do believe that the reason why the movie industry is dying is not because of people not wanting to see movies,' Gunn said. 'It's not because of home screens getting so good. The number-one reason is because people are making movies without a finished screenplay.' Where Does Marvel Go Next? Gunn noted that DC Studios recently 'killed a project' because the script just couldn't get to the right place, explaining: 'Everybody wanted to make the movie. It was greenlit, ready to go. The screenplay wasn't ready. And I couldn't do a movie where the screenplay's not good. And we've been really lucky so far, because 'Supergirl's' script was so fucking good off the bat. And then 'Lanterns' came in, and the script was so fucking good. 'Clayface,' same thing. So fucking good. So we have these scripts that we've been really lucky with or wise in our choices or whatever the combination is.' Another thing Gunn said that is working in his favor is that there is no corporate mandate from Warner Bros. to churn out a certain number of film and television projects at DC Studios. Gunn is an alum of Marvel Studios, having directed three 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movies and a Christmas special, and he noted that Disney's mandate to increase Marvel's output amid the launch of Disney+ had a negative impact on the larger universe. Disney CEO Bob Iger has openly admitted to making this mistake. 'That wasn't fair. It wasn't right. And it killed them,' Gunn said of Marvel. 'We don't have the mandate [at DC] to have a certain amount of movies and TV shows every year. So we're going to put out everything that we think is of the highest quality. We're obviously going to do some good things and some not-so-good things, but hopefully on average everything will be as high-quality as possible. Nothing goes before there's a screenplay that I personally am happy with.' With Gunn's 'Superman' arriving in theaters next month, his DC Universe is about to launch. Only one other movie in the new franchise has completed filming, 2026's 'Supergirl,' but the plan is to build out the universe on the big screen with movies about Batman ('The Brave and the Bold') and Wonder Woman. 'Batman's my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally,' Gunn told Rolling Stone. 'And it's not — I'm not writing Batman, but I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right, because he's incredibly important to DC, as is Wonder Woman. So outside of the stuff that I'm doing in the projects that are actively going, our two priorities are finishing our Wonder Woman and our Batman scripts.' 'Batman has to have a reason for existing, right?' he continued. 'So Batman can't just be 'Oh, we're making a Batman movie because Batman's the biggest character in all of Warner Bros.,' which he is. But because there's a need for him in the DCU and a need that he's not exactly the same as Matt [Reeves'] Batman. But yet he's not a campy Batman. I'm not interested in that. I'm not interested in a funny, campy Batman, really. So we're dealing with that. I think I have a way in, by the way. I think I really know what it's — I just am dealing with the writer to make sure that we can make it a reality.' Gunn said developing a Wonder Woman movie is 'actually easier for me, because there haven't been so many infinite portrayals of Wonder Woman — definitely not in movies, but really anywhere — that there have been of Batman.' 'Every single Batman story has been told,' Gunn concluded. 'It seems like half the comics that have come out of DC over the past 30 years have Batman in them. He's the most famous superhero in the world and the most popular superhero in the world. And people love him because he's interesting, but also having so much of him out there can also make him boring. So how do you create that property that's fun to watch?'
