Eradication possible through awareness: Collector
Vijayawada: NTR district collector Dr G Lakshmisha on Thursday emphasised that Sickle Cell Anaemia can be eradicated through comprehensive awareness, announcing large-scale awareness programmes which commenced on June 19. He highlighted a robust action plan in place to curb the disease, with a specific focus on tribal areas. On Thursday, to mark World Sickle Cell Day, the District Medical and Health Department organised a Sickle Cell awareness programme at the Kondapalli Tribal Welfare Girls' School. Collector Lakshmisha, along with other officials, unveiled posters, pamphlets, and manuals related to the Sickle Cell Anaemia Eradication Mission and comprehensive disease information. Speaking at the event, the collector stressed the urgent need to create widespread awareness about the disease across various segments of society, as part of the mission to eradicate Sickle Cell Anaemia even before 2047. He explained that while healthy red blood cells are typically round, in Sickle Cell Anaemia, these cells are crescent-shaped. He clarified that the disease is hereditary, passed from parents, and is not contagious. He added that the disease can be diagnosed through a simple blood test. He reassured that individuals with Sickle Cell Anaemia need not worry, as timely identification and proper medical care can significantly improve a patient's quality of life.

Collector pitches for pollution-free Vijayawada
Collective efforts are needed to ensure clean air, to make Vijayawada pollution-free, and for the realisation of Aarogyandhra, said NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha. Speaking at a meeting organised to discuss and review the implementation of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) at the Collectorate on Tuesday, Mr. Lakshmisha said that the data collected from the air quality monitoring stations set up in hotspots in the city, should be analysed from time to time and steps should be taken to reduce Particulate Matter (PM) 10 in the air. Noting that the PM10 suspended in the air stood at 64 µg/m³ in 2024-25, the Collector said that steps should be taken to reduce it. As per the World Health Organisation, the ideal PM10 level is 45 µg/m³. Mr. Lakshmisha said that steps like construction of pavement roads, enhancing green areas, use of mechanical sweepers, management of solid waste, and beautification of canals should be taken up. During the meeting with the officials from the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, Vijayawada Thermal Power Station and other departments, the Collector suggested that battery, electric and solar e-rickshaws should be encouraged on a larger scale. He added that Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) will be put to use soon to ensure an efficient and smooth traffic flow in the city. Mr. Lakshmisha also called for more vertical gardens, parks and parking slots in the city to achieve the goals of the National Clean Air Programme.

Kondapalli fort comes alive with yoga enthusiasts
Hundreds of people gathered at Kondapalli Fort on the outskirts of Vijayawada at the break of dawn on Saturday to take part in the Yogandhra programme organised by the NTR district administration. District Collector G. Lakshmisha said that the administration has been organising programmes as part of the month-long Yogandhra campaign in every village, mandal, tourist and historic sites since May 21. The administration had also organised such programmes at the Gandhi Hill, Pavitra Sangam, and Haritha Berm Park in Vijayawada. Mr. Lakshmisha encouraged people to practise yoga every day for 45 minutes for a healthy life. 'Yoga is panacea to all the lifestyle problems youngsters are falling prey to, such as BP, diabetes, hormonal imbalances and stress,' the Collector said while adding that the aim of organising such programmes is to increase awareness among the people about its benefits. Later, A.P. Non-Gazetted Officers' Association State president A. Vidyasagar thanked the administration for organising such programmes and encouraged public to make yoga a part of their lives. The fort came alive with cultural programmes, conducted by the Amaravati Yoga and Aerobics, as part of the programme. Students from the Sirisha Yoga Academy and Government Nursing College impressed the enthusiasts with their Operation Sindoor-themed performance. District officials, public, students, members of the A.P. State NGO members took part.

Yoga on Krishna waters today
Vijayawada: As part of the Yogandhra, the NTR district administration will be organising Water Crafts-Floating Yoga near Berm Park on the banks of Krishna river on Wednesday morning. NTR district collector G Lakshmisha, addressing the media at the Collectorate on Tuesday, said Floating Yoga will be organised to create awareness on the importance of Yoga and the goal of AP government on Yogandhra. He said Yoga will be performed on speed boats, punts, lifeboats, Jet Ski boats, sand boats. He said around 200 boats will be pressed into service for the mega Yoga campaign on the boats in Krishna river. He said around 1,000 people will participate in the Yoga programme and it may be a world record. He said the Yoga will be performed during the sunrise and amidst the scenic beauty on the bank of Krishna river. He said Yoga is good for health and appealed to people to participate in the Water Crafts-Floating Yoga programme. He said the department of Ayush, medical and health, municipal, irrigation, revenue, fisheries, panchayat raj, Vijayawada Municipal corporation, boating clubs, swimmers associations are working together to make this programme a grand success. Collector Lakshmisha said foolproof security arrangements will be made at Berm Park to prevent any untoward incident. Life jackets will be kept ready and expert swimmers will be drafted for the duty. He said CM Nara Chandrababu Naidu had launched Yogandhra with the objective of imparting training to two crore people in the state. Collector on Tuesday visited the Berm Park and inspected the arrangements for the mega Yoga event in Krishna waters.

Yogandhra draws overwhelming public response in NTR district
VIJAYAWADA: NTR District Collector G Lakshmisha announced that the Yogandhra campaign, promoting yoga's benefits, has drawn an overwhelming public response. Around 5,000 trainers are currently being prepared to teach yoga asanas to 10 lakh people in the district as part of a state-wide goal to reach two crore individuals by June 21. On Monday, the district administration, in coordination with Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) and the AYUSH Department, organised a large rally from Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium to Benz Circle. Over 3,000 people participated in the event, which marked the 20th day of the campaign. Lakshmisha, along with Joint Collector S Ilakkia and VMC Commissioner Dhyana Chandra, led the rally. Addressing the crowd, the Collector highlighted yoga's Indian roots and global relevance, stressing the campaign's goal of making yoga accessible to all age groups. The event also saw the launch of an anti-drug poster bearing the message 'Drugs Vaddhu Bro – Say No to Drugs Bro,' along with the toll-free helpline 1972. He reiterated the administration's commitment to eradicating drug abuse through sustained community RDO Kavuri Chaitanya and others were present.
