At noon on Sunday, June 15, officials said they 'successfully located and completed the drowning recovery earlier this morning.' Details on the cause of the drowning or the victim's identity have not yet been released. Officials urged everyone to stay out of the area and not make a wake nearby while crews were searching, as the wake would have altered the SONAR images for the crew. Lake Norman date turns deadly: Man drowns after trying to fetch item without life jacket, officials say
(QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The body of a 63-year-old man has been recovered from Lake Norman after multiple agencies responded to a reported distressed swimmer over the weekend. According to the North Carolina Wildlife Commission, the man and a woman, who were dating, were on a pontoon boat when a personal item went overboard. Officials said the man entered the water to retrieve it, but began having difficulty swimming. The woman, who reportedly did not know how to operate the boat, tried to throw a rope to him, but it wasn't long enough. She then entered the water to help, but also struggled to stay afloat. A nearby boater noticed the woman in distress and called for help, wildlife officials said. PREVIOUS: Body recovered after multi-agency search on Lake Norman for missing boater Emergency responders rescued her and transported her to the hospital; her current condition has not yet been released. The NC Wildlife Commission said the man went under and did not resurface. Search crews from Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire & Rescue, Troutman Fire, and Iredell County searched until about 9:45 p.m. Saturday, when weather conditions forced them to suspend operations. The search resumed on Sunday morning, and the man's body was located just before 10 p.m. using an underwater robot. His body has been taken to the medical examiner's office. Officials said neither was wearing a life jacket, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The water depth in the search area near Channel Marker 20, close to the Lake Norman State Park Campgrounds, was about 50 to 60 feet, typical for the lake's main channel, officials said. The family of the 63-year-old man has been notified of his death. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Lake patrol urges boater safety ahead of Memorial Day weekend
Lake patrol officers want boaters to enjoy themselves on the water this weekend. However, before they partake in the fun, there are a few things they want you to know first. 'The holiday weekend brings in more boat traffic,' said George Brinzey with the Cornelius Police Lake Patrol. ALSO READ: Lincoln Co. commissioners vote to leave Lake Norman Marine Commission Brinzey said Memorial Day weekend is the start of the boating season. And whether you are a new or long-term boater on Lake Norman, officers want you to keep boating safety top of mind. 'Far too many preventable drownings have occurred on this lake and many others around the state. And what it boils down to is situational awareness and lack of flotation,' said Brinzey. He said before you go boating, you need to do these things. 'Double-check all your safety equipment. Make sure that your life jackets are in good order, that they're not damaged in any way from being stowed away for so long. Check your fire extinguisher. Give it a shake,' Brinzey explained. Without taking these precautions, Brinzey said, a beautiful day on the lake could turn into a tragic one within seconds. Just last week, on Lake Wylie, a tubing crash left 21-year-old Trevor Dame with multiple broken bones. Video captured the moments before a boat crossed over the line of another pulling the tube Dame was on. His father, Norm Dame, told Channel 9 that his son is facing multiple surgeries. 'It was heartbreaking. I was upset, disappointed, brokenhearted, frustrated, and just wondering how, looking at the video. There were 20-25 feet between the boat and the tube. How could another boat be that close?' said Norm Dame. ALSO READ: Father says boat on Lake Wylie crossed into tubing line, severely hurt son Now, the owner and driver of the boat that crashed into the tuber is facing felony charges. 'It's about coming back to the dock safe,' said Brinzey. The group responsible for safety on Lake Norman is set to dissolve. But that is not expected to occur for another month. So, officers will be out in full force this weekend to help keep you safe. And they said that it will continue even after June 30.
