Lutheran Services Florida steps aside from leading Head Start in Duval County amid federal rebid

Big changes are on the horizon for early childhood education in Duval County, as Lutheran Services Florida (LSF) will no longer lead the region's Head Start program. The federal Office of Head Start has notified LSF that it plans to begin negotiations with a different provider for the role. LSF has led the Duval County Head Start program for over a decade, serving between 1,000 and 1,400 children annually with early education, family support, and wraparound services. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< Despite this long-standing presence, LSF officials said the decision to transition program leadership is not due to performance concerns. 'This decision has nothing to do with performance,' said Maria McNair, director of the LSF Head Start program. 'It's part of a standard federal rebid process designed to ensure continued program quality.' The rebid process, required periodically by the federal government, opens up leadership of Head Start programs to new applicants to ensure high standards are being met. McNair says efforts are being made to help staff transition. 'We're trying to ensure that the majority of our employees transition over to the new organization,' she said. Despite losing the lead role for Head Start in Duval, LSF isn't leaving the area. The organization will continue offering Early Head Start services for children under age three, supported by a newly renewed five-year grant. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] 'We are still going to provide services here in Duval County for Early Head Start, which is for children who are under three. Our contract for the particular Grant was renewed for the next five years,' McNair confirmed. The Office of Head Start has not yet provided additional details or a timeline for when the transition to the new provider will begin. Requests for comment have not yet been returned. TAWAU: Tawau police have commenced training for its Light Strike Force (LSF) unit as part of early preparations for the 17th State Election. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the In-Service Training (LDP) is crucial for equipping LSF personnel to handle any eventualities during the election period. 'This training aims to expose both new and experienced members to realistic scenarios, especially in the event of riots or disturbances during the election,' he said, Thursday. Jasmin said the latest LDP session at the Tawau District Police Headquarters (IPD) was conducted on Wednesday, involving 16 lower-rank police personnel. He added that the training was led by instructor and section commander Sergeant Khairul Iskandar Abdullah and was carried out effectively by simulating the actual atmosphere during a state election. 'The implementation of this type of LDP is part of our efforts to strengthen police readiness in facing any potential threats, particularly those involving public order,' he said. Advertisement He added officers involved in the training were exposed to various knowledge and skills, including a refresher on introductions, command words and LSF drill procedures. He expressed confidence that the training and knowledge shared with both new and experienced personnel will support them in their duties, especially when the actual election period begins. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Police hunt cable theft suspect who fled on PLUS Highway

MELAKA: Police are tracking down a cable theft suspect known as 'Kecik', who fled after being pursued by a Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) unit at Kilometre 216.8 of the North-South Expressway (PLUS) here on Tuesday. Melaka Police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the 25-year-old suspect from Teluk Intan, Perak escaped, while his 29-year-old accomplice was apprehended by MPV units from the Melaka Tengah and Alor Gajah District Police Headquarters. 'The suspect's photo has been circulated and we appeal to anyone with information to contact the police,' he told reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the Basic Light Strike Force (LSF) Course Series 1/2025 at the Melaka Police Contingent Headquarters today. Three days ago, the media reported that police had arrested a man after stopping a Toyota Hilux that was driving against traffic on the PLUS highway at 5.30 am, while his accomplice managed to escape. In the incident, the suspect rammed into four other vehicles, including a lorry, before police found cables in the four-wheel drive during inspection. Meanwhile, Dzulkhairi said the LSF basic course, which began on April 21 and involved six senior officers and 72 lower-ranking personnel, was conducted as preparation for potential incidents such as riots, disturbances, uprisings, and public order disruptions, especially during elections. 'This course also serves as early preparation to ensure Melaka police personnel are on standby in conjunction with Melaka's appointment as the host of the World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2025 and World Tourism Day (WTD) 2025 scheduled for Sept 7,' he said. During the event, Dzulkhairi also presented letters of appreciation to 14 police officers involved in the recent arrest of the cable theft suspect.
