Mortada Mansour sentenced to 6 months in prison for slandering Khatib
The Economic Court in Cairo on Monday ruled to imprison the former president of Zamalek Club, Mortada Mansour, for six months, after he was convicted of slandering the president of Al-Ahly Club, Mahmoud al-Khatib, and the club's legal advisor, Mohamed Othman. The court also ruled to fine Mansour LE40,000 and oblige him to pay LE 20,000 as temporary compensation to those he slandered. Background of the dispute The dispute between Mansour and Khatib has resulted in numerous legal cases, the most prominent of which was the ruling issued in February 2023, when the Court of Cassation rejected Mansour's appeal against a previous ruling to imprison him for a month over insulting and defaming Khatib. The ruling was then implemented and Mansour was deported to the Wadi al-Natrun prison, which led to his dismissal from the presidency of Zamalek Club by virtue of a court ruling. In November 2024, the Economic Court then issued two separate rulings obligating Mansour to pay financial compensation to Khatib, one in the amount of LE 500,000, and the other in the amount of one million Egyptian pounds, due to the cases of slander and defamation filed against him by the president of Ahly Club. Other pending cases Courts are still considering other cases between the two parties. Earlier this March, the Economic Court considered six new lawsuits filed by Khatib and others against Mansour, accusing him of defamation and slander. Ten other cases filed by Al-Ahly Club's legal advisor, Othman, regarding offensive statements attributed to Mansour were also adjourned. Edited translation from Al-Masry Al-Youm
