Winners, losers from NASCAR weekend in Mexico City
MEXICO CITY — A look at the winners and losers from Sunday's NASCAR Cup race at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. WINNERS Shane van Gisbergen — His rookie Cup season has been a struggle on the ovals but van Gisbergen did what he was hired by Trackhouse Racing to do — he won a road course race and put himself in a playoff spot. He did it easily, leading a race-high 60 laps and winning by 16.567 seconds — the largest margin of victory since Texas in November 2009 (25.686 seconds) and the largest margin of victory on a road course since Riverside in 1979 (32.9 seconds). Nate Ryan, Hendrick Motorsports — Placed three of its cars in the top 10. Chase Elliott was a season-best third, Alex Bowman fourth and William Byron ninth. Christopher Bell — He finished second, giving him seven top-three finishes in 16 races this year. He has three wins, three runner-up results and a third-place finish. Michael McDowell — His fifth-place finish was his best of the season. He has placed in the top 10 in four of the last six road course races. John Hunter Nemechek — His sixth-place finish is his third top 10 in the last six races and gives him a career-high five top 10s on the season. Cole Custer — After travel snafus led to him and a few others from Haas Factory Team to drive from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Atlanta so they could fly to Mexico early Friday, he placed a season-best eighth Sunday. Daniel Suarez — While he finished 19th in Sunday's Cup race, his victory in Saturday's Xfinity race in his home country was an electric and emotional moment he won't forget. #NASCAR … Crowd reaction when @Daniel_SuarezG won the Xfinity race LOSERS Carson Hocevar — Ricky Stenhouse Jr. confronted Hocevar after their second on-track incident in the last three races. Also, Hocevar's spin led to the final caution that came in the middle of a green-flag pit cycle and impacted the race for some drivers. On top of that, Hocevar finished 34th. He has finished 25th or worse in four of the last five races. Dustin Long, Kyle Busch — He entered the race tied for the last playoff spot (but outside the playoffs due to a tiebreaker). He crashed in the opening laps and finished last in the 37-car field. Busch now is 50 points out of the final playoff spot with 10 races left in the regular season. Kyle Larson — His car was damaged in Kyle Busch's incident and lost several laps for repairs. Larson finished 36th. He has finished 36th or worse in two of the last four races.

AI Just Took Over NASCAR – Here's the Burn Bar Tool Everyone's Talking About
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Amazon's Prime Video has developed the Burn Bar for NASCAR race viewers that displays real-time mileage during the race. With the help of an artificial intelligence model, each driver's fuel consumption and efficiency will be showcased after the telemetry data of each car has been analyzed. The Burn Bar is expected to help fans gain a new insight into team strategy, especially in mileage races such as last weekend's race at the Michigan International Speedway, where drivers had to preserve fuel to make it to the end of the race. NASCAR on Prime analyst Steve Letarte, who contributed to the development of the Burn Bar, explained that since the cars don't have a sensor that reports mileage, the AI tool makes mathematical calculations using the data obtained from the cars. He said: Chase Briscoe, driver of the #19 Bass Pro Shops Toyota, and Kyle Busch, driver of the #8 BetMGM Chevrolet, lead the field on a pace lap prior to the NASCAR Cup Series FireKeepers Casino 400... Chase Briscoe, driver of the #19 Bass Pro Shops Toyota, and Kyle Busch, driver of the #8 BetMGM Chevrolet, lead the field on a pace lap prior to the NASCAR Cup Series FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway on June 08, 2025 in Brooklyn, Michigan. More"It's the first true tool that is taking information off the car, making calculations and then displaying to the fan a calculation or measurement that is being used in the garage. And it does affect the team. "There's not a sensor on the car giving us miles per gallon. It's a mathematical calculation of other cars performances." Let's take a peek at The Burn Bar, the newest AI-Powered innovation from @PrimeVideo! — Sports on Prime (@SportsonPrime) June 2, 2025 The Burn Bar was featured during the race at Charlotte Motor Speedway last month for a short duration and will appear again this weekend for the race in Mexico. Letarte teamed up with Amazon Web Services and Prime Video analytics expert on Thursday Night Football, Sam Schwartzstein, to develop the Burn Bar. They used four models to analyze fuel consumption and then matched them with the actual data obtained from the teams post-race to shortlist the most accurate method. Schwartzstein revealed that the test they performed at Michigan last weekend proved successful. He said: "We projected William Byron to run out, which he did, and then we were on the razor's edge for Denny Hamlin. And then watching the truck push him back into victory lane at the end, knowing he was as close as we thought he was. What a cool way to see this feature come to life and elevate NASCAR broadcasts." Prime Video's senior coordinating producer for live sports, Alex Strand, shared his optimism in the path the team had chosen. He added: "It's really cool to live in a world where it shows us that anything is possible. We're starting with something that we're really excited about, but it's setting us down a path that will open up new doors for us. "I think that's what we're really excited about is to say, 'OK, we've had success in Year 1 on a feature that's resonated with fans right out of the gate.' It raises the table for our offseason."

How to watch Saturday's Xfinity race at Mexico City: Start time, TV info and weather
After a layoff of more than 17 years, the NASCAR Xfinity Series will return to a revamped Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. It's been 6,264 days since Kyle Busch won the most recent Xfinty race at the track, marking the second-longest gap between races at a track (Rockingham Speedway, which went 7,728 days from Feb. 21, 2004 to April 19, 2025). The road course in Mexico City has been repaved and reconfigured since the Xfinity Series' last visit with drivers tackling a 15-turn, 2.42-mile layout. There are 39 drivers on the entry list, and they all will race because of an international provisional that added a spot for a 39th qualifier (who will be ineligible for prize money or points). Dustin Long, Hometown favorite Daniel Suarez, who won the 2016 Xfinity championship, will be driving the No. 9 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports in his first Xfinity start this season. Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Christopher Bell (driving for Sam Hunt Racing) and Ty Gibbs (in the No. 19 of JGR) also will be moonlighting in the Xfinity race. Four of Gibbs' 12 Xfinity Series victories have been on road courses. Mexico City marks the series' second road course of the season. Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch among drivers with winning memories in Mexico City
Only three Cup drivers have experience racing stock cars on the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course. Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski competed in Xfinity races there when the series went from 2005 through 2008. Hamlin won the race in 2006 and Busch in the last NASCAR race at the track in 2008. But there are two other drivers who have celebrated wins at the facility. Daniel Suarez won three races there but on a 1-mile oval configuration used in the NASCAR Mexico Series in 2012-14. And Michael McDowell won a sports-car race there in 2005. Do those wins matter? "I recognize a few of the corners as I'm running it [in the simulator]," Hamlin said. "I'm like, 'Yeah I remember this, remember that.' "Certainly there are some different parts of the track that we didn't get to run. But overall, it feels pretty straightforward to me. Not much to it. I think there's a bunch of passing zones. I'm actually looking forward to this one." The 2006 win was Hamlin's first in a NASCAR national series race, so maybe Hamlin looks forward to it thanks to those great memories. When Hamlin and Busch raced, they competed on a configuration that was a 2.67-mile, eight-turn course. Now they will race a 15-turn, 2.42-mile course, a slightly shorter version than what is used when Formula 1 competes at the track. It was the return of F1 that resulted in a reconfiguration in 2015. "It was really cool and unique to just kind of see the fan nature and how different it can be or what it is and the energy that they bring to the track," Busch said. "It's a lot of fun to check that out. … For me to win the final race that we had there back in 2009, it was special." Suarez didn't even win at the facility making right-hand turns, so he takes those wins for what they're worth. With the additional turns, Suarez said he doesn't feel it is the same track that the few drivers who did compete in Xfinity would be used to at all. "It only makes you feel good," Suarez said. "I won there a couple times in an oval configuration. So is that is going to help me? Denny, Kyle, McDowell, they won on a race track that was completely different." Suarez believes the drivers will have to work to run well. "It's going to be a challenge," Suarez said. "Honestly, I don't think that there is a driver out there that has an advantage knowing the race track because it's going to be something completely new for everyone. "It's going to be one of those weekends that there are new things to adapt to and whoever does the best job adapting and improving the quickest is going to be on top." One of the new things they will adapt to is the part of the course that runs through the former baseball stadium that functioned as such 20 years ago but that is still used for events like concerts. "I've seen the F1 races there, so I have a good understanding [of the track]," Busch said. "I've raced there before, so not every corner is different, but the stadium section I know is a lot different. "It'll be interesting to see how all that plays out with our cars." The driver who might be able to correlate their experience the most will be McDowell, as the current Next Gen car is modeled after a sports car when it comes to suspension. "It does help I'm familiar with the track, familiar with the city, familiar with getting acclimated to the [higher] altitude and what that looks like," McDowell said. "So I think there are some advantages to having experience here. "I don't know how much it actually helps 20 years later, but I feel really good about going to a road course in general."' McDowell believes he can adapt to the new facility quicker than others. "Any time you go to a new road course where nobody has any experience or seat time, I feel like that's an advantage for us," McDowell said. "We've been working on it for a few weeks and feel like we're prepared as you can be." The key as far as adapting to the track will come with the extended weekend schedule. Instead of 20 minutes of practice with limited time to change parts and pieces before qualifying, Cup teams will get 75 minutes of practice Friday (a 50-minute session, an hour break and then a 25-minute session). They will then get a couple of hours to work on their cars before having to go through tech for qualifying Saturday, with the cars then impounded for Sunday's race. "It's nice that we have a practice where you can adjust and change on [things] unlike a typical weekend," McDowell said. "So we'll have a few packages we can run through and try to make some overall gains on our road-course package. I'm looking forward to it." Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR and INDYCAR for FOX Sports.
