US exits two military sites in Syria as regional conflict escalates

Shafaq News/ The United States conducted a tactical evacuation of troops from two military positions in Syria's northeastern Hasakah province due to escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, a source from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) confirmed on Thursday. The withdrawal affected the Istirahat al-Wazir and Tel Baydar bases, which lack advanced defensive systems, placing US personnel at increased risk as missile exchanges between Tehran and Tel Aviv continue in Syrian airspace, the source told Shafaq News. More than 100 trucks carrying military hardware and logistical supplies crossing from Iraq through the Al-Waleed border point toward US-led Coalition bases in Hasakah. Earlier, Syrian sources indicated that the US military activated defense systems and implemented precautionary measures in coordination with Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. A source close to US forces in Syria revealed to Shafaq News in April that the Pentagon had launched a new military redeployment plan, aimed at reinforcing its presence in Kurdish-controlled parts of Hasakah while reducing its overall footprint in northeast Syria. This marks the first on-the-ground confirmation of the US exit from the Istirahat al-Wazir and Tel Baydar bases, raising to at least four the number of positions vacated by American forces since President Donald Trump took office. The Trump administration announced earlier this month that it would scale down its military presence in Syria from eight bases to just one in areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces. While the SDF did not disclose how many US troops remain or which bases are still active, SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi told Reuters that the presence of only a few hundred troops 'would not be enough' to contain the threat posed by ISIS. 'The threat of Islamic State has significantly increased recently. But this is the US military's plan. We've known about it for a long time ... and we're working with them to make sure there are no gaps and we can maintain pressure on Islamic State,' Abdi said.

Global Coalition reinforces Syria bases despite US drawdown Shafaq

News/ The US-led coalition deployed extensive military and logistical reinforcements to its bases in northeastern Syria over the past two days, Shafaq News correspondent reported on Thursday. More than 100 trucks carrying military equipment and logistical supplies crossed from Iraq through the Al-Waleed border crossing to coalition bases in Syria's Hasakah province, according to the correspondent, who informed that the convoy included military vehicles, fuel, water, food supplies, and sealed trucks believed to contain weapons and ammunition. The trucks were dispatched to bases in Khrab al-Jeer, Qasrak, and Al-Shaddadi in rural Hasakah. The reinforcements arrived despite recent announcements from Washington regarding the reduction of US troops in Syria and the closure of at least three military bases. A source from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) told Shafaq News that US forces remain stationed at their bases in the Kurdish-controlled areas of northeastern Syria, confirming that weekly deliveries of military and logistical equipment are ongoing. He also noted that the Coalition, in coordination with the SDF, continues to monitor ISIS cells 'to prevent the group from exploiting the current situation to reorganize or carry out attacks in Syria.' Meanwhile, the SDF announced on Wednesday that it had carried out a security operation in cooperation with the coalition in the town of Al-Mansoura, west of Raqqa, targeting an ISIS cell. The statement said the operation followed close surveillance and led to the arrest of two prominent members of the group: Abdul Sattar Abdul Fattah Al-Mohammed, known as "Abu Amira," and his brother Mohammed Abdul Fattah Al-Mohammed, known as "Abu Al-Baraa," both from Al-Mansoura, who are involved in manufacturing improvised explosive devices and car bombs at a metal workshop used to produce silencers and explosives. The SDF reaffirmed its commitment to continuing security operations against the Islamic State, pointing out that the group's attempts to exploit instability in the country would be met with 'firm resistance' to safeguard civilians and public institutions in the region.

Syria Kurdish forces say 3 personnel dead in IS attack

by Naharnet Newsdesk 02 June 2025, 12:19 Kurdish security forces in northeast Syria said an Islamic State group attack killed three personnel on Sunday, as the jihadists keep up their attacks in Kurdish-controlled areas of the war-torn country. Noting "escalating activity" by the jihadists, a statement from the Asayish security forces said an IS cell "targeted a patrol" from the force's convoy and road security department on the Raqa-Hasakeh road. Since the December ouster of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad, IS jihadists have repeatedly attacked Kurdish-led forces in the country's north and northeast. The roadside blast resulted "in the death of three or our members", the statement said, adding that "sweep operations and investigations" had begun to track down those responsible. Once in control of large swathes of Syria and Iraq, IS was territorially defeated in Syria in 2019 in a battle spearheaded by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) with support from an international coalition. The jihadists have continued to maintain a presence, mainly in the country's vast desert. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor also reported Sunday's attack, saying it was carried out by gunmen "believed to belong to an Islamic State group cell". The Britain-based Observatory, which relies on a network of sources inside Syria, said Kurdish forces were "accompanying an oil convoy" that was travelling through Raqa province bound for "areas controlled by Damascus". IS on Thursday claimed its first attack on Syria's new government forces since Assad's fall, the Observatory and the SITE Intelligence Group said. The Observatory said the attack on Wednesday, carried out by a remote-detonated landmine, killed one person and wounded three members of the Syrian army's 70th. Reported IS attacks in areas controlled by the new Islamist-led authorities since Assad's overthrow have been scarce.
