GMADA reduces rate for Sector 76–80 allottees, MLA urges timely payment to avoid interest
Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh Thursday announced relief to allottees of sectors 76 to 80 from GMADA in the long-pending enhancement charges issue. According to Singh, GMADA had earlier issued notices demanding Rs 3,164 per square yard from the allottees. But after reviewing the matter, GMADA has now reduced the enhancement rate by Rs 839 per square metre and now the allotees have to pay Rs 2,325 per square yard which is a big relief and could save each allottee lakhs of rupees. Speaking at a press conference, the MLA said, 'For the past 15–20 years, some leaders of Mohali have misled people for their own political gain, resulting in huge losses to residents. When GMADA initially issued enhancement notices, these leaders who were in power stopped the delivery of the notices so that people wouldn't question them. As a result, the amount ballooned with interest over time.' He emphasised that his efforts have led to a breakthrough meeting with GMADA chief administrator Vishesh Sarangal, where it was agreed to drastically reduce the enhancement charges for the affected sectors. The MLA added, 'No penalty or interest will be charged from those who haven't deposited the amount yet, and those who have already paid the penalty will either get a refund or an adjustment.' Singh blamed former minister Balbir Sidhu for the financial burden on residents, claiming that enhancement notices were blocked for political advantage during his 15-year tenure as MLA. 'The amount tripled from 2008 to 2025. I have always stood by the people of Mohali, and it was my duty to reduce their financial burden,' he said. The MLA appealed to all allottees of sectors 76–80 to deposit the revised amount at the earliest to avoid further interest, saying that this is the time to act. 'Relief has been given now, make sure you benefit from it.'

Mohali development body to slash enhancement charges by ₹800 per sq metre
MOHALI : In a major relief to nearly 30,000 residents of sectors 76 to 80 in Mohali, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority ( Gmada ) is set to reduce enhancement charges by Rs 800 per square metre. The charges, which were earlier pegged at Rs 3,164 per square metre, will now be revised to Rs 2,364 per square metre, subject to final approval. Enhancement charges refer to the additional amount levied on plot allottees to compensate original landowners during the land acquisition process. Gmada had taken an undertaking from all allottees at the time of plot allotment, agreeing to pay the enhancement charges as and when decided by the authority. Confirming the development, Gmada chief administrator Vishesh Sarangal said, "We have proposed to reduce the rate by Rs 800 and will soon send the proposal to the authority concerned for approval." MLA Kulwant Singh, who has been advocating for a reduction in the charges, welcomed the move. "After multiple rounds of meetings with Gmada and state govt officials, we have managed to bring the charges down. This is a significant relief for the residents. Had this decision been taken 12 years ago, residents would have been spared from considerable financial strain," he said. However, despite the reduction, discontent remains among residents. They allege that the authority is shifting the burden of a decade-long delay onto homeowners.

Massive crowd gathers for Congress's ‘Save the Constitution' rally near AAP MLA's office in Mohali
In a bold political move, the Congress organised a high-energy 'Savidhan Bachaoo (Save the Constitution)' rally in Sector 78, Mohali, just a short distance from the office of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Kulwant Singh Saturday. The rally, led by senior Congress leader and former Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, drew a massive crowd despite adverse weather conditions, signalling a political resurgence for the party in the region. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, former Speaker Rana K P Singh, Congress co-incharge Ravindra Dalvi, and leaders like Inderbir Singh Bolaria also participated in the event. Addressing the crowd, Warring said, 'The BJP-RSS alliance is determined to divide this country in the name of religion. They are not only sacrificing the principles of the Constitution but also robbing people of their freedom, jobs, and rights.' Rana KP Singh also took a direct dig at the ruling AAP, stating, 'AAP has now become the B-team of the BJP.' Echoing the sentiments, Balbir Singh Sidhu said, 'The soul of this nation, our Constitution, our democracy, and our community, is under threat. But Congress, as the only national force, is fighting to preserve it. We will never allow the dictatorship that the BJP and RSS are trying to impose on this country to succeed.' Sidhu openly challenged the BJP, AAP, and RSS during the rally, signalling a combative tone from the party. Among the prominent attendees were Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu, District Congress Committee President Jeeti Padiyala, Deepinder Dhillon, Vijay Sharma Tinku, Rajwant Rai Sharma, Krishna Mitu, and Kamaljit Chawla. The political message in rally's location What made the rally's location even more significant was its proximity to AAP MLA Kulwant Singh's office. According to insiders, choosing this location was a strategic move aimed at sending a strong message to rival factions by showcasing the massive public turnout. For the past three and a half years, internal factionalism had weakened Congress's standing in Mohali, especially after Balbir Singh Sidhu briefly joined the BJP. However, since rejoining the Congress, this rally marked a strong comeback. Despite the bad weather, the enthusiastic public response has injected fresh momentum into the party's local unit.
