Bitcoin Steady Above $104K as Traders Eye Historically Bullish Second Half
Crypto markets drifted lower on Thursday, caught between hawkish macro guidance, looming global trade deadlines, and fading volatility. Bitcoin BTC hovered near $104,700 during Asia hours, slipping 1.2% over 24 hours, while ether ETH traded just below $2,860, down 1.8% on the day. The soft price action tracks with broader macro unease following Wednesday's FOMC hold, where the Fed kept rates unchanged but reiterated a cautious, inflation-sensitive stance. Historically subdued during the June-July stretch, crypto markets have entered a lull with BTC front-end implied volumes slipping under 40%, erasing the risk premium from recent geopolitical tension, Singapore-based QCP Capital noted in a Thursday market broadcast. Open interest across BTC and ETH perps remains flat, and option markets skew negative, with puts trading at a premium to calls – a sign of traders hedging against short-term pullbacks. 'There's been no change to the technical picture, which remains supportive of another push to the topside,' said Joel Kruger, strategist at LMAX Group, in an email to CoinDesk. 'BTC continues to consolidate bullishly, and a move through recent highs could set up a run toward $145,000.' Ether still lags its 2021 highs but is gaining momentum, he added. 'Clearing $2,900 could bring $3,400 into play,' Kruger said. One bright spot for crypto is the U.S. Senate's passage of a stablecoin framework, which adds another building block to what is becoming a more regulatory-friendly global environment. That's reinforced a broader institutional conviction. 'Globally, we're seeing continued progress that promises greater clarity and a more welcoming environment for institutional crypto adoption,' Kruger added. Still, the near-term setup remains cautious. Month-end OPEX flows, systematic rebalancing, and a lack of fresh catalysts could keep BTC stuck in its $ 102,000–$ 108,000 band for now. But with H2 historically strong for crypto, some desks are already looking ahead. 'The worst may be behind us,' Kruger said. 'And the next leg up could catch many off guard.'

Court criticises Absa's bookkeeping after bank fails to recover R6. 7 million

Image: Absa/Facebook Absa has lost a bid to attach property after it claimed that this was the best way to recover some R6.7 million it said was owed to it by two companies and Authar Arandana after they allegedly defaulted on a loan. In dismissing the dispute over the multimillion-rand business loan, the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg was scathing in its judgement about the reliability of Absa's books. 'In any event, it seems clear to me that… it is evident the bookkeeping of the plaintiff was in disarray.' The Judge, N.S. Kruger, said this conclusion was based on a review of communication between Absa as plaintiffs and defendants Gola Trading and Projects, Arandana, and Tswane Refineries. Kruger also considered 'various conflicting loan statements'. Kruger said in the recent judgement that 'it seems that as far as [Absa] is concerned, the one hand is unaware of what the other is doing. In my view the defendants have succeeded in raising triable issues [matters that can be defended] in these respects'. In 2021, Absa and Gola Trading and Projects signed a business loan, secured by a mortgage bond of R5.6 million and supported by personal guarantees from Arandana and Tswane Refineries. The contract's date is in dispute, having been signed in either February or October 2021, but the court noted its structure and obligations are not. The loan included a capital facility of R5.535m, fees and VAT, and an additional amount for interest and potential legal costs. According to the Absa, by mid-2023, Gola Trading and Projects had defaulted on payments, falling five instalments behind, which was more than R430 000. This, Absa claims, triggered a contractual clause allowing the loan to be cancelled and the full balance, of more than R5.27 million, to be called in immediately. But the defendants contest this, saying no such arrears existed. They point to a series of loan statements showing lower arrears and argue that subsequent payments – including two of R90,000 and a larger one of over R194,000 – brought the account into a credit position. By 10 October 2023, they received a statement showing that no arrears were owed. Despite this, Absa continued to chase the money, later adjusting the alleged arrears to R312,000 and seeking summary judgment. The amount claimed was later revised again to R4.27 million, which the judge said raised further questions. The defendants argued that this pattern of inconsistencies undermines Absa's certificate of balance and suggested a material dispute that should be tested at trial. Among the errors cited was an apparent reference to a '2019 agreement' in the bank's court papers – something Absa later admitted was a drafting mistake, the judgment noted. There were also discrepancies in the bank's internal calculations, leading to conflicting figures across statements and correspondence, the judge said. The defendants argued that, even if the loan was technically in arrears at one point, Absa's subsequent conduct, accepting payments and requesting further instalments, effectively reinstated the contract. They assert that no formal notice of breach was served before the alleged cancellation, and that the bank's changing demands demonstrate the agreement was still in place. Adding to the complexity, the third defendant has since gone into voluntary liquidation. Absa has postponed its claim against this party, focusing instead on recovering funds from Arandana and Gola Trading and Projects, and seeking a court order to declare the mortgaged property executable. However, this matter will now have to be settled through mediation. IOL

Logies chaos as Sonia Kruger ‘forgotten' in Gold Logie category and American star Kaitlyn Dever nominated for top acting gong
The 2025 TV Week Logie Awards nominations have been announced with a history-breaking six women vying for the coveted Gold Logie. Aussie TV's night of nights is set to return to Sydney's The Star Casino in August with a whopping 23 separate categories honouring the small screen. TV presenters Ally Langdon, Julia Morris, Lisa Millar, Sonia Kruger, Poh Ling Yeow and Lynne McGranger are competing for the Gold Logie – widely regarded as the highest honour in Australian television. The sole male star in the category is Lego Masters host Hamish Blake, who has already won the award twice in 2012 and 2022. On Monday, presenter Tara Rushton officially unveiled this year's nominees at a ceremony in Sydney but made an awkward gaffe after failing to announce Kruger. According to Rushton asked the assembled press to 'put your hands together for all your Gold Logie nominees' – with Kruger still left awkwardly offstage, waiting to be announced. 'Oh, hold on – Sonia Kruger! I am never going to live this down,' said Rushton, as Kruger finally made her entrance. 'I'm so sorry, Sonee,' Rushton added. 'That's me done.' Meanwhile, Blake told the same outlet that winning the award again would be 'the last thing anyone wants to see' and backed his fellow nominees instead. 'I'm just going to put it on record: never should someone win it less than I should win it this year,' he said. I think in this climate, in this day in age, the only guy getting up to win is the last thing anyone wants to see. 'I'm very happy to be nominated, a wonderful bunch of ladies I'm with … my god, it would be just a disaster if I won it.' The mostly female Gold Logie category is possibly an attempt by organisers to address a glaring gender imbalance, with just two winners in the past decade having been women. The relatively early announcements also give nominees a generous six week charm offensive to convince the public to vote for them for the top gong. Perhaps reflecting the dearth of scripted Aussie content currently on screens, this year's categories are largely padded out with game show hosts, competition series and reality shows. Meanwhile, the acting categories have been lumped into broad 'Drama' and 'Comedy' groups which made for some surprising bedfellows. This year, primetime soap Home And Away is in the same category as the critically acclaimed miniseries Territory. While the awards show is designed to honour Aussie performers, at least two foreign stars are up for acting gongs. English actress and Bridget Jones star Sally Phillips is up for the Silver Logie for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy for her role in the ABC series Austin. Meanwhile, American actress Kaitlyn Dever managed to sneak into the Silver Logie category for Best Lead Actress in Drama for her portrayal of cancer con-woman Belle Gibson in Netflix's Apple Cider Vinegar.
