Born At 6 Months, Just 700 Grams: Bihar Twins' Miracle Survival Story Stuns Doctors
Last Updated: According to officials at the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Begusarai Sadar Hospital, the infants were brought in by their desperate father after being turned away elsewhere In what doctors are calling a rare miracle, a pair of premature twins born at just six months and weighing less than a kilogram have survived after being refused treatment by multiple hospitals in Patna. The remarkable story of courage, persistence, and medical determination has unfolded at the Sadar Hospital in Begusarai, Bihar. According to officials at the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Begusarai Sadar Hospital, the infants were brought in by their desperate father after being turned away elsewhere. The twins, one weighing just 700 grams and the other around 800 grams, were born prematurely to a woman identified as Komal (name changed) in Patna. The premature delivery, which occurred before the completion of the sixth month of pregnancy, left the infants fighting for life with virtually no chance of survival. Doctors at several hospitals in the state capital reportedly told the family that there was no possibility of saving the babies. Refusing to give up, the family recalled hearing of a neonatologist named Dr Krishna Kumar in Begusarai, known locally for his work in newborn care. In a last-ditch effort, they travelled over 120 kilometres to reach him. The infants were admitted to the SNCU under the care of Dr Kumar, who began immediate intensive care treatment. Against all odds, both newborns responded to the medical support. The doctor confirmed that while the children arrived in extremely critical condition, they are now out of immediate danger and have started responding to breast milk feeding. The next few weeks remain crucial, but signs are positive. 'Saving babies born at just 24 weeks is an immense challenge anywhere in the world," Dr Kumar told Local 18. The babies came with extremely low birth weights and underdeveloped organs, but with the right care and continuous monitoring, there is hope, he said. The case has brought unexpected attention to Begusarai's Sadar Hospital, often overlooked in Bihar's overburdened health system. Officials say this success reflects both a family's relentless faith and the quiet improvements in neonatal care being made in district hospitals. Sushil Kumar, the infants' father, attributes their survival to divine will and human perseverance. 'We were shattered when every hospital told us there was no hope. But something kept us going. Dr Krishna Kumar and his team gave our children a second chance at life," he said with tears in his eyes. The twins will remain in the SNCU under observation for another few weeks. If all continues to progress well, doctors say they could be declared fully healthy by the end of three months, a remarkable feat for babies born so early. Karnataka high court bars police from widening RCB stampede probe for now
The Karnataka high court on Tuesday barred the state police from expanding the scope of its investigation beyond the initial first information report (FIR) registered in connection with the June 4 stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium that left 11 dead and several injured. The court also continued the restraint on the Bengaluru police from arresting officials of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and event management firm DNA Entertainment in the case. Justice SR Krishna Kumar directed that, for the time being, police must confine their investigation to the offences mentioned in the first of three FIRs registered suo motu following the incident. The court extended the interim protection from arrest granted earlier to the senior officials of RCB, KSCA, and DNA Entertainment until July 8. The FIR, registered at the Cubbon Park Police Station in Bengaluru, names the KSCA management for alleged negligence during the crowd-control disaster that unfolded as thousands gathered to greet the RCB team following its first-ever IPL title win. It also charges them under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for the offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. While all three entities have been named in the FIRs, no specific individuals from any of the organisations have been identified as accused. The court also took note of the state government's submission that only the FIR currently under investigation by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) would be pursued. The direction came during hearings on pleas filed by RCB, DNA and KSCA seeking quashing of the FIRs. Their counsel argued that all three FIRs arose from the same incident and covered identical grounds, making multiple investigations unwarranted. The stampede took place on June 4 when an overwhelming crowd turned up at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to witness RCB's IPL victory celebrations. According to the state, the stadium's capacity is around 30,000, but over two lakh people reportedly gathered outside and around the venue. The government has maintained that the tragedy was triggered by RCB's announcement of free passes for fans to attend the event. It alleged that RCB and DNA Entertainment failed to obtain the necessary permissions or put in place basic safety measures to control the massive turnout. Meanwhile, in parallel proceedings, a separate bench comprising by acting chief justice V Kameswar Rao and justice CM Joshi, hearing a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) into the incident, decided to implead RCB, DNA Entertainment and KSCA as parties to these proceedings. The bench also said it would appoint an amicus curiae to assist the court in examining the matter further. The state has already constituted a one-member judicial commission led by retired high court judge Justice JM Cunha to conduct an independent inquiry into the stampede. A separate magisterial inquiry is also underway. Last week, the state submitted a sealed cover status report on both inquiries before the division bench. The court on Tuesday said it will also consider whether the government can continue keeping the findings and interim reports confidential during the course of the proceedings.

Kedarnath trek in an ambulance? Police impound fake emergency vehicles used by pilgrims to skip the rush
Uttarakhand Police seized two ambulances en route to Kedarnath for carrying healthy pilgrims bypassing long queues. Drivers confessed to offering 'luxury' rides, exploiting emergency services during the busy yatra season. Authorities are increasing checks to prevent such misuse, which endangers genuine patients and burdens local resources, along the Sonprayag-Gaurikund stretch. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Sirens but no patients Short ride sold as 'luxury' Police grow suspicious Passengers flee, drivers fined Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Difficult flying conditions and limited infrastructure Recent incidents and past tragedies Pilots rely on instincts and visual navigation Allegations of poor maintenance and safety violations Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Regulatory action and pending safety reforms Two ambulances racing toward the Kedarnath trek route were stopped and seized on Saturday after Uttarakhand Police found healthy pilgrims inside and no medical emergency on record. Officers said the vehicles' flashing lights and sirens were used only to bypass the long line of visitors heading for the Himalayan shrine, a TOI report stated. The incident shows how some pilgrims misuse emergency services to shorten their journey during the busy Kedarnath yatra season, putting genuine patients at risk and burdening local on duty near Sonprayag noticed the ambulances driving toward Gaurikund, the last motor‑road point before the 16‑kilometre climb to the temple. No distress call had come from Gaurikund, which has no hospital. Inside the vehicles officers found three men dressed as pilgrims, none of whom was said Haridwar driver Nikhil Wilson Massih and Amroha driver Krishna Kumar admitted the ambulances were hired for convenience. One air‑conditioned vehicle carried a single passenger who paid for a 'luxury' ride; the other had two booked passengers and three more picked up en route, much like a shared taxi.'The unusual thing was that the ambulance was moving towards Gaurikund and that too with people who had posed as patients. If someone is unwell, there is no reason for going towards Gaurikund to take the trek route,' a policeman at Sonprayag told TOI. 'If there had been some medical emergency, an ambulance should have moved towards Sonprayag, Rampur and Rudraprayag. Therefore, it was very surprising for the police team.'The three original passengers slipped into the crowd before officers could question them. Police issued challans under the Motor Vehicle Act and impounded both vehicles at the Acrow bridge checkpoint.'Our job was just to take the ambulances up to Gaurikund,' one driver said, adding that he did not know how much money changed hands between owners and said the misuse of sirens and priority lanes will be reported to district officials. Additional checks are planned along the 2‑kilometre Sonprayag‑Gaurikund stretch to prevent repeat incidents during the pilgrimage five helicopter accidents in the span of six weeks along the Gaurikund–Kedarnath pilgrimage route have also led to an urgent review of safety protocols by aviation regulators and operators. Two of the incidents were fatal, while the others resulted in emergency landings and serious rotor operating in this region rely heavily on visual cues due to the absence of basic aviation infrastructure. The route lacks air traffic control systems, reliable weather stations, and emergency diversion points. These challenges have sparked debate over whether helicopter services should continue in the Char Dham sector until better safety mechanisms are in recent run of accidents began when a Kestrel Aviation helicopter crash-landed near a road, injuring the pilot. Following that, two aircraft suffered rotor damage, and another made an emergency landing. These add to earlier incidents, including the 2022 crash that killed seven people, the 2023 accident that claimed the life of a senior finance officer from the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA), and the 2013 rescue operation crash that killed 20 military Sharma, a pilot familiar with the Kedarnath sector, said, 'We are flying in one of the world's most unforgiving regions with very little real‑time weather support. Operations are being conducted on pilot observation and visual reference. The weather is unpredictable and changes rapidly.'Another experienced pilot added, 'There is no ATC or weather station. Flying in the narrow valley from Gaurikund to Kedarnath needs experience and safety awareness, as there are no emergency landing sites.'Operators have raised concerns over poor oversight. One operator said, 'There are no checks. Faulty parts are being swapped with others to show repairs. Conscientious operators and passengers suffer.' A senior pilot described the recent wave of accidents as 'the worst we've seen,' and said services should be suspended for the season, adding, 'Greed is driving it, not safety.'The civil aviation ministry has suspended Aryan Aviation, grounded two TransBharat pilots for flying in bad weather, and asked UCADA to set up a flight coordination centre. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has also deployed officials to monitor operations many pilots say these steps are not enough. 'No route info is provided. Until these issues are fixed, operations should be stopped,' one pilot is now reviewing operating procedures and considering a separate flight management centre for Kedarnath. In the meantime, calls for halting commercial helicopter services continue to grow.

Kedarnath Pilgrims Caught Using Ambulances With Sirens To Skip Queue, Vehicles Seized
Last Updated: The three men posing as patients fled into the crowd at Sonprayag before police could question them; challans were issued to the ambulance drivers under the Motor Vehicles Act Two ambulances blaring sirens and flashing lights raised alarms on the Kedarnath Yatra route when they were spotted speeding from Sonprayag toward Gaurikund—yet no patients were aboard. Police intercepted the vehicles near Akro Bridge and discovered a shocking scene: instead of medical emergencies, pilgrims were comfortably seated inside, using the ambulances to bypass queue congestion on the route. The drivers, Nikhil Wilson Masih and Krishna Kumar from Haridwar and Amroha, revealed that the ambulances were hired not for rescue but to transport passengers quickly and bypass traffic. One air-conditioned 'luxury' ambulance was booked by a single passenger, while the other, an ordinary ambulance, had two passengers but picked up three more people en route from Haridwar, treating it like a taxi service. According to a report by The Times of India, the two ambulances initially appeared to be responding to a medical emergency. However, the absence of any distress call or reported mishap from Gaurikund, which notably lacks a hospital, raised red flags for the local police. The police have seized both ambulances and launched an investigation to determine if such services are being widely misused for rental purposes. According to reports, the short stretch between Sonprayag and Gaurikund—roughly two kilometres—is usually covered either on foot or via shared shuttle vans that regularly transport pilgrims. Gaurikund marks the end of the motorable road and the starting point of the arduous Kedarnath trek, which involves a challenging uphill climb through rugged terrain and increasingly thin mountain air. Speaking to the Times of India, a police official in Sonprayag said it was highly unusual for ambulances to be heading towards Gaurikund, especially with supposed patients on board. 'If someone is genuinely unwell, the logical route would be in the opposite direction—toward Sonprayag, Rampur, or Rudraprayag, where medical facilities actually exist," the officer said. The report further stated that the three individuals posing as patients managed to slip away into the crowd at Sonprayag before police could question them. Authorities later issued challans to both ambulance drivers and registered cases under the Motor Vehicles Act. During questioning, the drivers claimed ignorance about any monetary transactions involved, stating they were simply following instructions from the vehicle owners. 'We were just told to drive the ambulances to Gaurikund," one of them reportedly said. Meanwhile, following a recent helicopter accident near Kedarnath, the government has tightened regulations for flights on the Chardham route. Now, only experienced pilots will be allowed to fly in the valleys. Get breaking news, in-depth analysis, and expert perspectives on everything from politics to crime and society.
