‘Squid Game's Lee Byung-Hun Teases Frontman Spinoff On ‘Tonight Show' Appearance

Lee Byung-Hun, who plays The Frontman in Squid Game, made his Tonight Show debut and teased some details about the third and final season of the Korean smash hit series as well as a possible spinoff. When asked by Jimmy Fallon whether there will be a Frontman spinoff, Byung-Hun answered positively using the infamous voting buttons on the show. He did quickly follow that up by saying, 'There is a possibility we'll never knows what happens.' More from Deadline Nate Bargatze Admits He's 'Nervous' To Host Emmys In 'Late Show' Spot 'The Daily Show' Has Some Fun With Its Very Own Pedro Pascal Tom Segura's 'Bad Thoughts' Renewed For Season 2 By Netflix The Frontman plays a more integral role in seasons two and three as the show's protagonist, Seong Gi-hun, also known as Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae), continues to fight to stop the murder of hundreds of people for the whims of the VIPs. The third season, which returns to Netflix on June 27, picks up from the season two cliffhanger as Gi-hun is dealing with the loss of his closest ally Jung-bae and deals with the impact of the Frontman infiltrating the rebellion as a player. Byung-Hun admitted that he didn't know whether the show would be a hit. 'When I first read the script, it was a very interesting story with a very unique structure but at the same time it was experimental so I thought either it'd be a huge hit or a complete flop,' he added. He also revealed that he didn't tell people close to him that he was even in the show. 'Netflix asked me to keep it as a secret so I didn't say it to anyone, my close friends or my mom. One day after Squid Game opened and yelled at me and said 'How could you not tell me?',' he said. Byung-Hun has had a long career in South Korea but has also appeared in a number of Hollywood movies including playing Storm Shadow in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and its sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation, starring alongside Bruce Willis in Red 2, playing T-1000 in Terminator Genisys and Billy Rocks in The Magnificant Seven. He compared walking in the Frontman outfit to playing a ninja like he did in G.I. Joe. 'Squid Game is a Korean story by a Korean director with Korean actors and Korean language so when I first came to L.A. and New York for Squid Game, I was so shocked by the fans' reaction. I'm so proud of it,' he added. A Frontman spinoff, if indeed creator Director Hwang would want to do it, would be the latest addition to the Squid Game universe. David Fincher is also developing a U.S. remake of the series. OLDBOY Writer Hwang Jo-yoon Developing New Korean Crime Thriller GOLD LAND to Disney+ — GeekTyrant

Disney+ is diving deeper into Korean crime drama with Gold Land , a new original series from Oldboy screenwriter Hwang Jo-yoon. It's described as a 'fast-paced series about smuggling, loan sharks and escaping one's past.' The show marks Hwang's streaming debut and the story centers on Heeju, 'a woman from a remote town who accidentally comes into possession of gold bars from a smuggling ring. Finding herself in a van full of gold and pursued by dangerous criminals, Heeju races toward the one place she vowed never to return.' Park Bo-young stars as Kim Heeju, 'a determined woman desperate to escape her past, while Kim Sung-cheol plays Jang Wook (nicknamed 'Woogy'), a member of the criminal organization hunting Heeju who grew up in her neighborhood.' The series is helmed by director Kim Sung-hoon, known for Chief Detective 1958 and Confidential Assignment . Disney+ has been steadily growing its Korean slate, and Gold Land joins an increasingly stacked lineup. Upcoming titles include Delusion , a vampire drama; Low Life , a gritty treasure-hunt thriller; and Tempest , a geopolitical action series involving a diplomat and special agent. Not to mention recent hits like Unmasked , Hyper Knife , and Nine Puzzles , the latter breaking records as Disney+'s most-watched Korean original globally in just nine days. With Gold Land , Disney+ seems to be signaling a clear direction: darker stories, emotionally complex characters, and creators who aren't afraid to take risks.

Netflix K-drama Mercy for None review: So Ji-sub leads middling gangster revenge saga

2.5/5 stars Advertisement Lead cast: So Ji-sub, Heo Joon-ho, Gong Myung, Ahn Kil-kang Mercy for None, Netflix Korea's latest gritty genre original out of South Korea, is a show about a man who destroys himself to seek justice for his dead brother. It is also about fathers blinded by their love for their sons. But most of all it's a show about men beating the living hell out of each other. The man who does most of that beating is the hulking Nam Gi-hun, played by broad-shouldered bruiser So Ji-sub ( Doctor Lawyer ). Gi-hun used to be a top lieutenant in the Bongsan Gang, led by Gu Bong-san (Ahn Kil-kang, A Shop for Killers ), which is closely affiliated with the Joowon Gang, led by Lee Joo-woon (Heo Joon-ho, Buried Hearts ).

K-drama Second Shot at Love midseason recap: uneasy mix of social themes and romcom tropes

Lead cast: Choi Soo-young, Gong Myung Advertisement Latest Nielsen rating: 2.7 per cent At one point in Second Shot at Love, Han Geum-joo (played by Girl's Generation K-pop star Choi Soo-young) reveals her habit of drinking soju secreted inside a bottle of toner at her vanity table to hide her drinking habit from her imperious mother, Kim Gwang-ok (Kim Sung-ryoung, A Virtuous Business ). In the same confessional sequence, her father, Han Jung-soo (Kim Sang-ho, Sweet Home ), and sister Han Hyun-woo (Jo Yoon-hee, The Escape of the Seven ) also reveal their hiding places – bourbon in a cistern, beer cans in a doghouse. Hiding bottles of booze from family members is a pretty clear sign of serious alcoholism. This seems to fit with the apparent theme of the show, which is about a young woman trying to kick her drinking habit and get her life back on track.
