G7 pictures misrepresented to claim South Korean president was snubbed
"(Lee Jae-myung) can't be seen in the G7 leaders' group photo, even with invited countries," reads a Korean-language post shared June 17, 2025 on Facebook. Another post shares a different picture with a similar . South Korea was one of seven non-member countries invited to participate in sessions on global issues, including economic security, artificial intelligence and climate cooperation. Lee also held bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and other leaders during the summit (archived link). Other posts on Threads and South Korean forums such as Ilbe made similar claims, suggesting Lee was not recognised as an official invitee -- a falsehood AFP previously debunked. Comments indicate some users believe Lee's absence from the pictures shows he was not formally invited. "Of course they wouldn't let an observer enter the group photo," one user commented. Another wrote: "What a national embarrassment, going all the way there just to be pulled out of a group photo." The first photo in the false post was taken during a meeting of G7 finance ministers and central bank governors held in late May in Banff, Alberta -- weeks before the summit of national leaders (archived link). A picture captured May 21 by the Italian NurPhoto shows the same scene. It does not feature the barrel seen in the false post, which appears to be a reference to far-right allegations surrounding the death of past associates to Lee (archived link). South Korea is not a member of the G7, so Lee was not expected to appear in the photo. AFP distributed a picture of the same scene with a caption saying it shows the group's "family photo". AI image of crashed jet falsely linked to Iran-Israel war
said its forces had shot down two Israeli fighter jets, a report dismissed as "fake news" by an Israeli official, an image surfaced in posts falsely claiming it shows a downed F-35. But the picture contains visual inconsistencies typical of AI-generated content, an AFP analysis found. "The F-35 shot down by Iran. Much bigger than I thought," reads the Korean-language caption of an image shared on Threads on June 15, 2025. The image appears to show a massive fighter jet that has crashed in the desert and is missing its left wing. A crowd appears to have gathered around its nose. It circulated after Iranian state media said the country's forces had downed two Israeli fighter jets during a massive Israeli air raid on June 13 (archived link). An Israeli official rejected the report as "fake news" (archived link). Image Screenshot of the false Threads post taken June 19, 2025, with a red X added by AFP The same image was shared on South Korean forum Aagag, and a wider crop appearing to show the plane next to a road surfaced in similar Threads and X posts as well as in other forums such as SVR Forum, Ruliweb, MLB Park and Inven. But the image has tell-tale signs of being AI generated, and the purported F-35 fighter jet does not match photos of the warplane. In the version that shows the plane next to a road, the people surrounding the aircraft appear to be as large as the buses and one vehicle appears to be fused to the road. Image Visual insistencies contained in the falsely shared image -- highlighted and magnified by AFP Moreover, the shape and size of the purported crashed jet -- which according to manufacturer Lockheed Martin measures just under 16 metres (52 feet) -- differs from F-35s as seen in photos available An AFP photo of an Israeli F-35 also shows the symbol on its wing -- a Star of David on a circle -- is different to the symbol on the purported crashed jet's wing, which appears to be a star with a thick border. S. Korean population and ballot figures used to resurface baseless election fraud claims
"Choo Mi-ae was elected representative in Hanam-A district through voter fraud," declares the Korean-language caption of a graphic shared in a Facebook post on June 16, 2025. Choo, a six-term lawmaker and former justice minister, during the April 2024 general election (archived link). The post, however, questions the legitimacy of the vote. Superimposed text on the graphic reads: "You call this a country? A nation ruled by bandits!" It then lists purported voting figures from the district's Shinjang 1-dong "Total population: 6,950. Number of eligible voters: 6,467. Number of votes cast: 7,179." Image Screenshot of the false Facebook post, captured on June 17, 2025 The same graphic alleging voter fraud in , and has resurfaced since centre-left candidate Lee Jae-myung's resounding victory in South Korea's June 3 presidential election (archived link). "The problem is that the People Power Party chooses to ignore voter fraud, so what is the point of this evidence," read a comment on one of the posts. Another said: "It is evident that Choo Mi-ae's election was fraudulent." Official data from the South Korean government and the country's election watchdog, however, shows the figures used in the graphic are inaccurate. Population and voting data Information from the Ministry of Interior shows the total population of Shinjang 1-dong at the time of the April 2024 general election was 6,902 -- not 6,950 as claimed in the falsely shared graphic (archived link). According to South Korea's National Election Commission (NEC), the number of eligible voters in Shinjang 1-dong during the April 2024 general election was 7,179 -- not 6,467 (archived link). The NEC data also shows 4,719 votes were cast -- not 7,179. "Even if the number of ballots cast had exceeded the population of the neighbourhood, that would not constitute evidence of fraud," an NEC spokesperson told AFP on June 17. South Korea allows voters to cast their ballots outside their district of residence during early voting (archived link). "This means that non-residents can legally vote in a different area from where they reside, causing the number of votes cast in the district to exceed the number of residents," the spokesperson said. This misunderstanding has become a recurring theme in South Korean elections, especially among groups alleging electoral fraud. The NEC issued a statement on June 1 in response to separate allegations of election fraud in Buan County in the North Jeolla province, saying the number of votes corresponds to the total number of electors who cast their votes at ballot stations in the county, "not just those who reside in the area" (archived link). Suicides increased last year, but attempt survivors at ER decreased: report
Fewer survivors than before were hospitalized after suicide attempts in 2024, raising suspicion that a substantial number were turned away by ERs The number of suicide deaths in 2024 increased compared to the previous year, but the number of those admitted to the emergency room after attempting suicide actually increased in the same period, leading to suspicion that some of those attempt survivors had been unable to receive medical help. Local Korean-language daily Kukmin Ilbo on Sunday reported that 23,247 people were admitted to the hospital ER in 2024 after attempting suicide and survived, citing a Ministry of Health and Welfare data submitted to Rep. Kim Nam-hee of the Democratic Party of Korea. This marked a significant decrease from the 30,665 in 2023. But the number of suicide deaths last year is provisionally tallied at 14,588, which was up from 13,978 in 2023, according to the government-affiliated Korea Foundation for Suicide Prevention's data. As more suicide deaths is likely to indicate more suicide attempts overall, there has been speculation that people who attempted suicide may have been turned away by hospital emergency rooms, presumably due to lack of staff sparked by the recent medical strike. In protest of an increase the enrollment for medical schools by the previous administration, doctors across the country have engaged in a mass walkout that resulted in nationwide shortage of medical staff, particularly at major hospitals. This led to spike in reports about emergency patients being sent to another hospital by the staff at hospital emergency rooms, due to the ER being unable to provide necessary medical care. Netflix has announced everything coming to the streaming service in June 2025 and it's a lot to unpack. So I'm highlighting five must-watch shows and movies that you need to add to your watchlist. The biggest name by far this month is a familiar one: "Squid Game." The hit Korean thriller is back for its third and final season, and it probably goes without saying, but you don't want to miss it. That's not the only returning show this month. "Ginny & Georgia" also returns for its third season, and the Shane Gillis comedy series "Tires" returns for season 2. Whether these are familiar names to you or not, they're undoubtedly the biggest names arriving on Netflix this month. Aside from these top picks, I've got the full slate of everything new to Netflix this month listed below. Plus, we have a roundup of what's leaving Netflix in June 2025, so you have one last chance to watch. Here's everything coming to — and leaving — Netflix this month. "Squid Game" has been one of the biggest shows on Netflix — ever. The dystopian Korean-language thriller is a must-watch whenever new episodes arrive, and this final batch of episodes will be no different. If you've never seen the show before, it stars Lee Jung-jae as Gi-hun, who starts the series as a down-on-his-luck divorced dad, estranged from his daughter and desperate for cash. He finds an opportunity for cash, but gets far more than he bargained for and is drawn into a series of deadly children's games with a massive cash prize. He's trying to end the games once and for all, but his attempt was thwarted at the end of season 2. Now, he's the prisoner of The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and he might never be seen in public again. Stream on Netflix starting June 27 "Ginny and Georgia" stars Brianne Howey as Georgia Miller, a 30-year-old mother who, between child abuse and being a mother since her teenage years, is carrying a lot of trauma. It's caused her to flee more than one relationship or home at the first possible sign of danger. That's been rough for her kids: Ginny (Antonia Gentry) and Austin (Diesel La Torraca). But they've seemed to have found a home in Wellsbury, Massachusetts, and Georgia seems to have found a long-term partner in her husband-to-be, Paul (Scott Porter), who is the mayor of the town. But that fairy tale ending for their story has been put on hold. Georgia was arrested for murder during her wedding. Can the Miller family handle that pressure? Or will it fracture Ginny and Georgia's already stressed mother-daughter relationship? Stream on Netflix starting June 5 "Tires" stars Steve Gerben as Will, the manager of one of his family's struggling auto-repair shops. But he's not alone at Valley Forge Automotive Center. His obnoxious cousin Shane (Shane Gillis) messes with Will every chance he gets, as do, frankly, the rest of the staff. Season 2 begins with things looking good for Will, though. A surprise marketing win has Will and Shane riding high and the shop doing well, but now they face new challenges. This show is often more funny than good, but given that it's absolutely hysterical, it's still definitely worth watching. Stream on Netflix starting June 5 "The Waterfront" stars Jake Weary as Cane Buckley. Cane's part of the Buckley family, a prominent North Carolina fishing family, led by Cane's parents: patriarch Harlan (Holt McCallany) and matriarch Mae (Maria Bello). Things aren't going well for the Buckleys behind the scenes, though, and they're in danger of losing everything. That causes Harlan to turn to drug smuggling, and puts the Buckleys in bed with an up-and-coming drug lord, Grady (Topher Grace). Based on the trailer, "The Waterfront" looks like a healthy mix of comedy, melodrama and crime. It also looks like it could be Netflix's next surprise hit. Stream on Netflix starting June 19 This thriller stars Taraji P. Henson as Janiyah, a single mother whose day just keeps getting worse. She's just been evicted and is struggling to care for her sick daughter. With nothing left to lose, she holds a bank hostage until she can cash a check and get money to pay for her daughter's medicine. "Tyler Perry's Straw" also stars Sherri Shepherd as Nicole, the bank teller who has to stop Janiyah from doing something more drastic than she's already done. They're joined by Teyana Taylor as Detective Raymond, who empathizes with Janiyah and wants to bring her in without totally ruining her life.
