Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The canal bridges where the authorities plan to clear encroachments and install barricades include Karunamoyee Bridge, Chetla Lock Gate bridge, Chitpore bridge, Bagmari bridge, Salt Lake slip bridge, and Chetla RCC bridge. Officials said these bridges, which span different canals across the city, have shanties under them on the canal sides. "Last year, a fire broke out in a slum under Durgapur bridge in New Alipore. The bridge was damaged and KMDA had to take up repair work. There are encroachments, like shanties and makeshift structures, under several such bridges that need to be cleared to prevent similar incidents," said a KMDA official. KMDA has started the process to engage agencies for the job at an estimate of nearly Rs 50 lakh. — Suman Chakraborti

Carriageway repairs start on Ultadanga slip bridge

1 2 3 Kolkata: The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has started carriageway repair work of the one-way Ultadanga slip bridge over Kestopur canal, connecting VIP Road with Salt Lake. On Friday, one lane of the slip bridge was left open for vehicles to move as bituminous mastic work was being done, blocking the other lane. Officials said the carriageway, which is a one-way slip bridge, deteriorates quite often as the authorities take up carriageway repair work as and when needed. With the monsoon ahead, the bridge's carriageway stretch which was damaged in several spots, needed to be repaired to prevent further deterioration, officials said. Named as a slip bridge, which is only about 100 metres in length, the bridge is used as a short-cut for vehicles to move towards Salt Lake and EM Bypass from VIP Road. KMDA is also working on the plan to set up another Bailey bridge over Kestopur canal for vehicles to enter VIP Road from Salt Lake, bypassing the traffic congestion at Ultadanga. Bidhannagar MLA and minister Sujit Bose, along with KMDA officials and Bidhannagar traffic police officers, recently conducted an inspection to finalise the proposed site on the canal side at Salt Lake AA Block where the bridge would be set up. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like בלב ת"א: יחידות מגורים יימכרו מ-2.5 מיליון ש"ח Channel22 Undo Officials said once the bridge is set up, it would be the second Bailey bridge and fourth bridge overall over Kestopur canal, after the Bailey bridge at Lake Town, Ultadanga slip bridge and the bituminous carriageway both-way bridge at the junction of AK and AJ blocks. Lake not dredged in 50 yrs, high metallic sedimentation detected

1 2 Kolkata: A test report on the present quality of the 72-acre wide Rabindra Sarobar waterbody shows high toxic metallic sedimentation on the lake's bed. Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) will be taking expert opinion on whether this could be one of the reasons for the frequent fish deaths in the waterbody. Officials said that the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) earlier collected water samples from the lake to analyse its condition. "According to the parameters, the overall quality of the waterbody is more or less satisfactory. However, on the basis of primary observation, there may be some toxic elements close to the waterbody bed as a high amount of metallic sedimentation has been found," said a KMDA official. Officials said that high contents of zinc and magnesium were found in the sedimentation. "Expert opinion will be taken to determine whether this high metallic toxicity on the waterbody bed was one of the prime reasons for the frequent fish deaths or not. It is being explored as to what could be done to reduce this metallic content. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! Last year, the authorities sprayed quicklime on the Sarobar waterbody to neutralise the toxic elements of the lake, following events of frequent fish deaths. However, the lake has not been dredged in over 50 years. Environmentalist and lake regular Somendra Mohan Ghosh said that there was no dredging of the lake, which resulted in significant sedimentation on the lake's bed, reducing the lake's depth. "Hydro raking should be done at regular intervals to prevent the build-up of sediment and to maintain the lake's overall health," Ghosh said. KMDA officials said currently, JU experts were conducting tests to determine the exact depth of the waterbody at different levels, as there is no accurate data available. As a long-term course of action is being explored, officials said there is a requirement to increase the vegetation of the waterbody, which consists certain species of plants that help in increasing the lake's dissolved oxygen level and other parameters to improve its quality.
