Vancouver's Kitsilano pool reopens Saturday
Social Sharing After being closed for part of last summer, the Kitsilano pool will reopen on Saturday. "The pool looks beautiful, clean, ready," said park board commissioner Scott Jensen. Vancouver's largest outdoor pool was damaged by a king tide in January 2022, and had been leaking 30,000 litres of water an hour. The heated, 137-metre-long, salt water pool is located beside Kitsilano Beach on a flood plain on the shore of English Bay. "It is a very well-used, well-loved asset," said Jensen. "Where it's located it gets a lot of the environment affecting it." It said there is no critical repair work scheduled for this season, but ongoing yearly maintenance and repairs will continue. The pool is over 50 years old, and is in what the city calls its "end-of-life phase." Last summer the pool remained closed until early August as staff needed prolonged dry weather to perform necessary maintenance. "Because it's an uncovered pool, we need the best weather to be there for the work to be done, so it has to be sunny and warm," said Jensen. City staff are working on a feasibility study, according to a park board memo sent to CBC News, which will guide future decisions about the pool. The study includes public engagement that will start next week with an online survey as well as in-person events.

Cult-favourite Vancouver chicken shop comes to Kitilsano's Batch for the summer
Kitsilano's pool concession Batch opened to the public as a seasonal pop-up in 2024. (Courtesy: City of Vancouver) Just one year into its existence and one of Vancouver's most popular summertime patios, Kitsilano's Batch, is already scheduled for an upgrade that will see an expansion of both its menu offerings and its capacity. To celebrate its first anniversary, the bar at the Kitsilano Pool concession is collaborating with cult-favourite chicken joint DownLow Chicken and growing to include 60 more seats. The expanded menu features various classics from the Commercial Drive chicken shop, including the Nashville-fried OG Sando and DL Tenders, alongside new editions specially curated for the location, including the Burrito on the DL, the SWagyu Dog, and the Kits All-Beef Burger. Batch opened as a seasonal pop-up bar in 2024 in partnership with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, pairing live music with a drinks line-up comprising craft beers, wine and cider. 'We're excited to be partnering with the Park Board and the amazing Batch team, and to be joining them at such an iconic Vancouver location this summer: the famous Kitsilano Pool Concession,' said Doug Stephen, co-founder of DL Chicken. 'Kitsilano has always been a neighbourhood full of energy and great food culture. We can't wait to be part of that and bring the heat to the community with our fried chicken creations.' The concession, running from Tuesday to Friday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. and across the weekend from 12 p.m. to 10 pm, will be ushered in just ahead of the grand opening of Kits Pool — scheduled for Saturday, June 21. Reservations open June 19 at noon. 'This partnership has been an incredible way to connect with the Kits community,' said John Negrin, owner of Batch. 'We've always believed that public spaces can — and should — be lively, welcoming places that bring people together. We're thrilled to partner with DownLow Chicken and continue our collaboration with the Vancouver Park Board as we grow into this epic location.'

Vancouver's Kitsilano Pool needs more repairs, won't open for May long weekend
Vancouver's beloved but beleaguered Kitsilano Pool won't open on the May long weekend. The 50-year-old saltwater swimming spot revealed itself to be in need of even more repairs when staff began preparing it for the season, according to the park board. 'We recognize that the pool holds a special place in the hearts of Vancouverites as an iconic facility, synonymous with summer. Staff are working hard to complete the necessary work and are committed to providing timely updates as progress continues,' an announcement from the board said, adding that the opening is 'expected' in mid-June. Last year, Kits Pool ultimately opened for an abbreviated season in August and the future of the pool has been something the mayor and council have sought to address, in part, by passing a motion that would pursue the potential for corporate sponsorship to fund a rebuild. The pools at New Brighton and Second Beach will open on May 17, in time for the unofficial start of summer. Online registration in advance is advised for would-be swimmers, as the board notes that 'admission is not guaranteed' at drop-in sessions. The May long weekend will also bring the opening of city-operated splash pads and wading pools and lifeguards patrolling at beaches. The park board notes that alcohol consumption is allowed at beaches – with the exception of Sunset Beach, Third Beach and English Bay.
