Shinty: Oban Camanachd storm to victory in Glasgow Celtic Society Challenge Cup final
Oban Camanachd flexed their muscles, displaying the depth of their fully fit squad, before running out 6-1 winners over Kyles Athletic in the Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Challenge Cup final at Peterson Park. Daniel MacVicar's shot low across the keeper from the right to put the Oban side ahead before Malcolm Clark touched Lorne Dickie's hit-in home to make it 2-0 at the turnaround. James Pringle lost his marker as he ran left before pulling a goal back, but Ross Macmillan sprinted onto Daniel MacVicar's ball forward to beat keeper Iain MacFarlane to make it 3-1. Substitute Daniel Maccuish and Ross Campbell put gloss on the win. Daniel Maccuish juggled the ball by defender and keeper for a brilliant individual effort before Ross Campbell hammered home two fine strikes from the left. Oban Camanachd captain Daniel MacVicar was outstanding throughout, and he stepped forward to collect shinty's oldest trophy from Glasgow Celtic Society president Donald Fletcher. This was Oban Camanachd's third successive Celtic success, their longest winning run since they took south shinty's main prize for eight successive seasons between 1987 and 1994. Oban Camanachd boss Daniel Cameron has now won this trophy as player, captain and manager and he said: 'I knew we had the depth of squad today and that's something we haven't had this season. 'To have the luxury of bringing on a Scottish international like Daniel MacCuish shows where the squad is at just now. 'At the start of the season, people said we'd struggle after losing 6 or 7 players, but we'll let people talk. We have our own in-house goals, and we'll keep them to ourselves, but they will be our focus.' Kingussie will meet Newtonmore in the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-finals after both won their last-eight ties. Dylan Borthwick gave Kingussie an early lead at Lovat before Greg Matheson levelled. Dylan Borthwick scored again, but Callum Cruden blasted home a disputed penalty to make it 2-2. Savio Genini chipped in with another vital goal, scoring the winner with five minutes remaining. Kingussie manager Iain Borthwick said: 'We were flying during the first half-hour and could have been well ahead but for their keeper Ronan Macmillan. 'The second half was more even so it was a relief to see Savio's shot hit the net. The semi-final should be a cracker.' It took extra-time before Newtonmore saw off Skye 3-1. The Islanders led through Archie Millar, but Iain Robinson equalised soon after. Goals in the second half of extra-time from Conor Jones and Iain Robinson again sent More through. Manager Peter Ross said: 'I thought we'd more pressure but Skye were always dangerous. 'They aren't far away from being a side that can win things. We won it with a wonder save from Kenny Ross from Dan MacDonald and a wonder goal from Conor Jones after good play from Declan Brannan who got stronger and stronger as the tie went on.' Oban Camanachd face Glasgow Mid Argyll in the other semi-final. Fort William are two points clear at the top of the Mowi Premiership after beating Kinlochshiel 3-1. Arron Jack put Shiel ahead but Lachie Shaw equalised before half-time. Hamish Shaw put the Fort ahead soon after the restart and a late second from Lachie Shaw sealed victory. Fort William co-manager Alan Knox said: 'We were against the wind during an even first half, but we played some lovely shinty after that and dominated from there. I thought their keeper Josh Grant made some outstanding saves.' Kilmallie go third in the Mowi National Division after beating Glenurquhart 2-1. Full forward Martin Stewart dropped deep to lay the ball off to Ben MacKinnon who sent a blistering 30-yard strike by Stuart MacKintosh in the visiting goal to put Kilmallie ahead. Martin Stewart was again the provider as Archie MacNiven smashed home the second from the left. Daniel Maclean pulled a goal back, but it wasn't enough.

Oban thrash Kyles to win Celtic Society Cup
Oban Camanachd overwhelmed Kyles Athletic 6-1 with a late surge at Yoker to win the Scottish Seafoods Celtic Society Cup for the third year in a row. Five different players found the net as the Oban side again became shinty's south area MacVicar and Malcolm Clark put Camanachd 2-0 up at half-time but James Pringle brought Kyles right back into it early in the second half. However, Kyles' revival only lasted five minutes before Ross MacMillan ran on to a through ball for Camanachd's third.A fine piece of stick work and a neat lob from Daniel MacCuish further extended Camanachd's advantage. Two fine strikes from Ross Campbell, both rocketing in by the far post, completed a comprehensive victory for the Oban Lorn Dickie received the Donnie MacNiven Memorial Medal as man of the 3-2 winners over Lovat at Balgate will meet local rivals Newtonmore, who defeated visitors Skye 3-1 after extra time, in the north semi-final of the Artemis MacAulay Borthwick scored an early opener for Kingussie and it was almost half-time before Greg Matheson equalised. Borthwick put Kingussie ahead again soon after the restart and a Calum Cruden penalty provided Lovat's second equaliser. Arron Jack opened for the visitors in the first half but Lachie Shaw soon replied. Fort then went on to take the points with a goal from Hamish Shaw and Lachie Shaw's late edged Glenurquhart 2-1 in the National Division's only Saturday encounter.

Kingussie win MacTavish Cup for third straight year
Kingussie won the WM Donald MacTavish Cup again with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Lovat at the newly-refurbished Bught Park in Inverness. Shinty: MacTavish Cup final - Lovat skipper says 'ignore league results', as Kingussie counterpart hunts captain's caman
A refurbished Bught Park, Inverness, is the setting for the first final of the shinty season as holders Kingussie meet Lovat in the WM Donald MacTavish Cup showpiece. Both captains think this contest is too close to call. While Lovat may have slipped into the Mowi Premiership relegation zone last weekend, their skipper Martin Mainland said: 'Don't take our league results as an indication of how the final might go – our league form's been patchy but that's down to injuries and player availability. 'We've had a stronger squad for the three cup competitions and we're unbeaten in these.' It is a much-changed Lovat rearguard after keeper Stuart MacDonald and defenders Drew Howie and Daniel Grieve stepped down at the end of last season. Mainland – who has won the MacTavish on two previous occasions – is now fulfilling the full-back role and has been impressed by keeper Ronan Macmillan, who stepped up from the second team. He said: 'Ronan is such a good shot-stopper, but I feel as a defence, we've let him down at times this year. We're all building that experience of playing together – something Stuart, Drew and Dan had for years. 'I've broken my ankle a couple of times recently, including in last year's Camanachd Cup final. I've rested it, but now playing the full back-role suits me.' Kingussie have lifted 11 of the last 12 trophies on offer, but captain Thomas Borthwick, a four-time MacTavish winner, is taking nothing for granted. He said: 'It's a cup final and it's all about what happens during the 90 minutes. 'My first win came in 2010 when my uncle Stephen was manager. 'I've never won a silver-mounted caman before (given to the victorious captain), so that's an incentive – but so is Kingussie winning.' Borthwick's played upfront for most of his career, but is currently revelling in a midfield role. He added: 'I enjoy midfield – whether full-centre or wing-centre – where you're more involved in the game. 'I've had injuries in the past, but I've played every minute this season, and although we've been without key players over recent weeks, we'll be going in with a full squad on Saturday, so the manager has options.' Lovat are without top scorer Marc MacLachlan, who's on a pre-planned holiday, but Greg Matheson should return, while Kingussie welcome back Savio Genini, Lee Bain, Rory MacKeachan, Dylan Borthwick and Cammie Bremner. Earlier in the day, Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh and Rockfield primary school contest the MacKay Cup final before the MacTavish Juvenile Cup final between Glenurquhart under-17 and Newtonmore under-17. With two Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-final spots up for grabs, Oban Camanachd are favourites at National Division side Bute. The Oban side were boosted by Daniel Maccuish's return from injury last weekend. Kyles Athletic and Glasgow Mid Argyll both go into their tie at Tighnabruaich on the back of successive defeats. With Kingussie and Oban Camanachd in cup action, Fort William play their game in hand and can go level on points with the Kings at the top of the Mowi Premiership if they win at bottom side Beauly. The first derby of the season between Kinlochshiel and Skye Camanachd takes place at Rearaig. Shiel were encouraged when Ali Nixon played 90 minutes following injury last week, but manager Willie MacRae fears David Falconer's season may be over with the player on crutches. Skye boss Kenny MacLeod's hopes of including Jordan Murchison have been dashed after the talented forward suffered an eye injury playing for the second team last week. The top two sides in the Mowi National Division clash as second-placed Col Glen host leaders Lochaber. Col Glen, who trail by a point, have Jamie MacVicar free of suspension. Kilmallie's Calum MacDougall misses Inveraray's visit as he starts a three-match ban. In the WCA Mowi Premier League, Lochaber play one of their two games in hand on leaders Badenoch when they visit Skye. Lochaber are currently four points off the top.

Shinty: Kingussie maintain advantage at Mowi Premiership summit
Victories for the top four left the business end of the Mowi Premiership unchanged, with Kingussie maintaining their slender one-point lead at the summit. The league leaders had to work hard for a 1-0 win at the home of determined bottom side Beauly. Advertisement Oban Camanachd edged Kinlochshiel by the same score in Wester Ross and Fort William defeated Kyles 2-1 at Tighnabruich. Newtonmore extended their run to seven straight league and cup victories, 4-0 against visitors Caberfeidh and in Portree, Skye escaped the second relegation place, consigning Lovat to it on a 5-2 scoreline. Ferguson Balliemore Cup favourites Lochaber ground out a 2-1 victory over Oban Celtic at Mossfield Park. Thomas Borthwick's goal midway through the first half was all that separated champions Kingussie and a Beauly side which looked far better than their league position suggests. Advertisement A first-half Daniel MacVicar penalty kept Oban Camanachd in second place. Fort William kept in pursuit when Calum Shepherd scored just before half-time and Ewen Campbell just after, with Roddy MacDonald's counter insufficient to salvage anything for Kyles. Fourth-placed Newtonmore opened up a four-point gap over their opponents when Joe Coyle and Iain Robinson made it 2-0 at the interval, before Robinson's second and a goal from Conor Jones completed the job. Willie MacKinnon, Ross Gordon and Ruaraidh MacLeod all scored for Skye late in the first half. James MacPherson pulled one back for Lovat and Dan MacDonald made it 4-1 before Cameron MacMillan grabbed the visitors' second and MacLeod completed a double in stoppage time to round it off. Advertisement Lovat now contemplate the MacTavish Cup final against Kingussie from second bottom place in the league with an extra game played. Oban Celtic created a whiff of a Balliemore upset when Kyle MacFarlane put them ahead as the interval beckoned, but a Shaun Nicholson double eventually put Lochaber through. Inverness rushed to a 4-0 lead against Strathglass from the league above them before prevailing 4-2. Cup specialists Inveraray disposed of Aberdour 4-0 including a Lewis Montgomery hat-trick and Col Glen progressed 3-0 on penalties after 120 minutes of play produced a 3-3 draw with Glasgow Mid Argyll.
