Goodwill Theatre gets nearly $5 million grant to expand operation

JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Goodwill Theatre in Johnson City is receiving a major boost to its plan to build a three-story addition and increase its performing arts capacity five-fold. The New York State Council on the Arts has awarded Goodwill Theatre with nearly $5 million toward restoring the 1899 firehouse that sits adjacent to the historic theater building. Much of the money will go toward the addition which will create lobbies with bathrooms for all three floors of the brick structure as well as provide an elevator and additional stairwell. The addition will allow for public access to the 2nd and 3rd floors, as well as a new entrance for the Firehouse Stage on the 1st floor. Plans are to open a new 300-seat theater on the 3rd floor called the Rooftop Playhouse. The second floor will house the Goodwill Theater's offices and a multi-purpose room for rehearsals, trainings and educational programs. Good will CEO Naima Kradjian says the goal of the grant is to make the arts more accessible. 'In our community, there are a lot of people who come to the Firehouse because it's affordable and because they can't go out of town to go see things. They can't pay that higher price. So, that is what we do, so we want to do more of that,' Kradjian said. Kradjian says the new first-floor entrance will allow the Schorr Family Firehouse Stage to expand to 200 seats, resulting in a 400 percent increase in capacity overall between the two venues. The bar and lounge area will also be expanded. The Goodwill is planning to launch a capital campaign to come up with the necessary matching funds. It has 3 years to use the state grant and Kradjian says it will be at least a year before any work is under contract. The Roberson Museum and Tri-Cities Opera also received NYSCA capital improvement grants. Who were the victims of the shooting outside the DC Jewish Museum? Truth Farm educates public on the importance of Narcan following student overdose

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – After a Tompkins County student overdosed on fentanyl last week, Truth Pharm is educating the public on the importance of Narcan. The Dryden Central School District released a letter to the public stating that a student overdosed on fentanyl after using what they believed was a marijuana vape. After collapsing in the hallway, the student was administered multiple doses of Narcan. The vape was not purchased at a licensed dispensary but at an independent convenience store that was not permitted to sell marijuana products. Executive Director of Truth Pharm Alexis Pleus commended Dryden for their approach to the incident. She encourages schools to carry Narcan and train their staff because it could save a life. Pleus says it's important to use non stigmatizing language when discussing substance use, especially with children. 'Students are going to dabble and try. This is an age old thing, it's been going on for decades. What parents need to do when they have conversations with their kids is make sure that they're aware of the potential risks and dangers but recognize we can't control our kids once they leave the house. Most likely they're going to do things that we don't approve of. Their judgment center isn't fully developed. And what can they do to stay as safe as possible? Have Narcan on hand,' Pleus said. Truth Pharm offers free Narcan kits and fentanyl testing strips as well as Narcan training, education sessions, and support services. Several Naloxboxes are installed around the community for quick access to the lifesaving medication. Who were the victims of the shooting outside the DC Jewish Museum? Another successful Kick It For Cans kickball tournament

RICHARD T. STANK MIDDLE SCHOOL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Kick It For Cans! That's the name of an annual kickball tournament and fundraiser for the Susquehanna Valley Sabers Food Center. This morning on a softball field behind Richard T Stank Middle School, teams from SV's two elementaries, Brookside and Donnelly, squared off in friendly competition. Joining them were Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar and district school resource officers, including Tony Wood who founded the tournament. In advance of the game donations were raised to support the food pantry. It was established 2 and a half years ago by Donnelly Social Worker Stilloe. 'Everybody has come together as a school community. I'm so grateful that I have everyone. I found my people. The high school kids that have come, their senior year, periodically through the school year to help pack boxes,' Stilloe said. More than 2 dozen businesses, organizations and families contributed over 10 thousand dollars to support the Sabers Food Center. Wood came up with the idea after witnessing 2 Sheriff's deputies join an impromptu kickball game after dropping off a donation to the center 2 years ago. SUNY Broome students ready to walk the graduation stage

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Hundreds of SUNY Broome students are preparing to move their tassel from one side of their mortar board to the other during graduation this evening. The community college held a Toast to the Tassel event this morning in the cafeteria. Roughly 800 students have earned degrees or certifications this year. Today, students were encouraged to don their cap and gowns and pose for pictures with family. There was also a sparkling juice toast. SUNY Broome President Tony Hawkins says tonight's ceremony will be extra special for him as he finishes his second year at the helm. Hawkins says these graduates started at Broome the same year he did. 'I know many of them. We started together, we explored things together. I couldn't be more excited as I walk around the room and see people who were new when I was new and see the growth and confidence that they've achieved over the last 2 years,' Hawkins said. The graduation ceremony takes place at the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena tonight beginning at 6:30. Who were the victims of the shooting outside the DC Jewish Museum?
