Bizarre ‘Sun Stops Play' interruption halts T20 Blast match between Kent Spitfires & Gloucestershire in Canterbury
There have been some bizarre stoppages in cricket's 180-year history. One such incident occurred during Wednesday's T20 Blast match between Kent Spitfires and Gloucestershire in their South Group clash at St. Lawrence Ground in Canterbury, where the players were forced to leave the field due to the sun. Chasing a modest target of 158, Gloucestershire's openers got off to a confident start before 'Sun Stopped Play' at 8:15 PM local time, as the duo of Miles Hammond and D'Arcy Short left the pitch when the light was shining directly into their eyes. The openers returned after an eight-minute delay. Gloucestershire Cricket confirmed the unusual interruption on X, posting: 'Sun stops play. Rather than rain, the sun is in the eyes of the batters. For the safety of the players, the sides have come off the pitch. Score remains 29/0 [3.2].' Gloucestershire successfully chased down the total in 18.2 overs with seven wickets in hand, with skipper Jack Taylor scoring a fine half-century. Taylor made 54 off 36 balls, supported well by Oliver Price, who contributed 41 off 31 deliveries to guide their team to victory. 🚀 As if they never left! ☀️ Hammond hits a 6 just 3 balls after coming off due to light issues. #BecomeGlorious — Gloucestershire Cricket 🏆 (@Gloscricket) June 18, 2025 However, this wasn't the first instance of sunlight interrupting play. A similar stoppage occurred at McLean Park in Napier during the 3rd T20I between New Zealand and Pakistan in 2020, when the sun's angle made it difficult for batters to see the ball. Play was halted until sunset before the home side resumed their innings. Earlier, the same ground had witnessed an identical interruption in January 2019 during an ODI between New Zealand and India. Earlier in the T20 Blast match on Wednesday, Harry Finch and skipper Sam Billing scored 42 and 38 respectively, taking Kent Spitfires to 157/9 in 20 overs after electing to bat.

Beating Somerset a 'big statement' - Bell-Drummond
Kent opener Daniel Bell-Drummond says ending Somerset's 100 percent start to their T20 Blast campaign is "a big statement".The 31-year-old played a starring role, scoring his first century of the competition this season as Kent Spitfires posted 228-5 and won by four runs in smashed 12 fours and four sixes off 49 balls to score exactly 100 as Kent moved within six points of the South Group leaders."It was a brilliant game of cricket, I enjoyed it from start to finish, and I think the crowd enjoyed it as well," he told BBC Radio Kent. 'Really proud day at my second home' Somerset, victors in each of their first five Blast games before Sunday, last won the competition in 2023, but have also been runners-up twice in the past four seasons."It is always a difficult place because they're always at the top or close to winning this competition, so for us to win [there] is a big statement," Bell-Drummond added."I was a bit slow to start but once I got going, everything I was hitting was finding gaps, going for four or six, so it was just one of those days."Bell-Drummond, who has spent his entire county career with Kent, attended Millfield public school in Somerset as a youngster after securing a scholarship to study there."It [Sunday] was a really proud day for me because I went to school down the road and I've got a lot of friends there who are basically my family," he added."It was great having them all down [to watch]. It's almost my second home so I was really proud to win in front of old friends and teachers."Kent next welcome Gloucestershire to the Spitfire Ground on Wednesday evening.

County Ground regulars will still have the dramatic victory over Middlesex on Thursday (June 12) when Somerset chased down 230 to win. This was followed by a satisfying win over Gloucestershire on Friday night. They will be facing Kent Spitfires later tofay. Kent sign Pakistan's Ali and South African Dudgeon
Kent have signed Pakistan Test bowler Kashif Ali and South African paceman Keith Dudgeon for the start of the 2025 season. But Australian fast bowler Wes Agar will not rejoin the club until the end of May as his workload is managed at the end of the Australian season. Ali and Dudgeon will be available for the County Championship opener at Northampton on Friday, 4 April until the conclusion of Kent's trip to Derbyshire on Monday, 26 May. Dudgeon, 29, has 224 career first-class wickets at an average of 25.79, while Ali has 110 first-class wickets at 28.01. Ali, 30, made his Pakistan Test debut against West Indies in January, taking two wickets. Australian seamer Tom Rogers will also play for Kent Spitfires in the group stage of the Vitality Blast. "Playing county cricket is such a big deal for South Africans and I'm looking to take this opportunity with both hands," Dudgeon told the Kent website. "I'm excited to play for this great team and I will always do my best every time I wear a Kent shirt," Ali said. Kent will play in County Championship Division Two following their relegation from the top tier last season. It will be the first experience in English cricket for both Dudgeon and Ali. "They are both good bowlers, and both will, we feel, complement our existing bowling unit well during their time here," Kent director of cricket Simon Cook added. "We acted quickly to identify and secure their signatures as soon as it became clear that Wes Agar would only be available for June and July."
