Rachel Reeves told petrol prices would be near record highs without current fuel duty cuts
The Keep It Down tax break for drivers is safe until next year 'VITAL CUT' Rachel Reeves told petrol prices would be near record highs without current fuel duty cuts Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) PETROL prices would be near record highs without the current fuel duty cuts, Rachel Reeves was warned today. The AA cheered the lowest pump costs since July 2021 - but says it is solely due to the 5p cut to the hated driving tax won by The Sun's Keep It Down campaign. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up A drop in the price of petrol saw service stations charge 132.3p a litre on Thursday – a fall from 135.5p in early April. Without the 5p cut, the cost of fuelling a car would now be an average 138.3p a litre, according to the AA. The Keep It Down tax break for drivers is safe until next year. But Ms Reeves is under huge pressure from Labour MPs to find more money to fund benefits, and that could result in an onslaught of tax hikes at the 2026 Spring Budget. 'Without the duty cut, petrol would still be uncomfortably close to the record level seen before the pandemic and Ukraine war economic shock. 'The Chancellor needs to consider this in upcoming tax deliberations.' The Sun's asks Rachel Reeves' constituents their thoughts on fuel duty rises

Greedy fuel bosses are ripping off drivers and must be punished, say furious MPs
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) GREEDY fuel bosses are ripping off drivers and must be punished, furious MPs have warned. They accused petrol retailers of keeping pump prices high despite wholesale costs tumbling — and demanded urgent action be taken against them. The average petrol price is now 132.5p a litre, with diesel at 138.8p, RAC Fuel Watch said. Earlier this month, the RAC warned drivers were still being short-changed — saying prices should be at least 4p lower based on wholesale costs. Back then, petrol was 134.1p and diesel 140.6p, meaning pump prices have hardly moved despite continued wholesale falls. Led by Dunfermline and Dollar MP Graeme Downie, the Labour group urged the Competition and Markets Authority to 'immediately launch an investigation and consider fining or reprimanding retailers who are ripping off consumers'. They backed the Government's new PumpWatch scheme but warned: 'It will not bring down prices at the pump.' Labour has pledged to roll out a Fuel Finder app by the end of 2025 to help drivers track the cheapest prices near them. PM Sir Keir Starmer also promised Sun readers earlier this year he would 'drive down the cost of motoring'. The Sun's Keep It Down campaign has helped freeze fuel duty for more than a decade — saving drivers £100billion.
