Greek FM to visit Libya amid maritime border dispute
Greece's Foreign Minister, Giorgos Gerapetritis, will travel to Libya on 1 July for talks focusing on contested maritime boundaries and rising migration across the Mediterranean, Greek newspaper Kathimerini has reported. A diplomatic source said Gerapetritis will visit both Tripoli and Benghazi and reiterate Athens' call for negotiations on maritime boundaries. The minister is also expected to raise the issue of irregular migration from Libyan shores, which has surged this year. The source said Greece was prepared to provide resources to help Libya combat the flow of migrants and disrupt human trafficking networks. The dispute between Greece and Libya centres on the status of islands including Strofades, Sapienza, Schiza, Gavdos and Chrisi, and their role in drawing maritime borders. Greece maintains these islands must be factored into any agreement. Libya disagrees, arguing that the islands have no effect on the boundaries. Relations between the two nations have been strained recently after Libya's Government of National Unity and its rival administration in the east opposed a Greek call for international oil and gas exploration licences in waters south of Crete. According to Greek newspaper Kathimerini, Gerapetritis is expected to meet with Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbaiba in Tripoli, Speaker Ageela Saleh in the east, and the commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar. Athens is closely watching the shifting dynamics in eastern Libya, particularly regarding maritime agreements. Greece is concerned that the eastern authorities, led by Haftar and aligned with Saleh, may be open to negotiating a maritime border agreement with Turkey. The newspaper reported that Haftar appears more receptive to such talks as Turkey intensifies its outreach in the region. On June 2, Libya's House of Representatives formed a technical committee to examine the maritime agreement proposal submitted by the eastern-based government under Prime Minister Osama Hammad. The move comes amid growing coordination between eastern Libyan officials and Turkish authorities. In April, General Saddam Haftar, Chief of Staff of Libya's ground forces, traveled to Ankara and met with Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler. In May, Libyan National Army units took part in joint military exercises with Turkish forces, a development seen by Greece as a potential threat to its maritime interests. What was supposed to be a routine hike turned deadly for a man in Greece on Monday. Christos Stavrianidis, a reportedly experienced hiker, was in Fraktou forest in northeastern Greece with his friend Dimitris Kioroglou, another hiking veteran, when tragedy struck. The two encountered a bear a few meters away from them when it began to attack. 'I didn't have time to react, that's the truth. My dog got in the way and gave me 2-3 seconds to get the pepper spray out. I sprayed her [the bear]. She ran away, went to Christos [the other hiker] who was on the edge of the cliff. She gave him a push and he fell down,' Kioroglou told the Greek newspaper, Kathimerini. Kioroglou, who credited his dog intervening with giving him the extra time necessary to escape, managed to take shelter in a tree and eventually called for help. Stavrianidis, meanwhile, fell down the 2,600-foot ravine. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Agence France-Presse. The two men were reportedly hiking toward the remains of a Greek war plane that crashed in the area roughly 70 years ago. Spyros Psaroudas, a general coordinator of the environmental organization Kallisto, spoke with TV ERT and said the bear was likely "surprised" by the climbers. "Condolences to the man's family, he was a nature lover, in love with this area, he had visited it repeatedly and there is no doubt that what happened is something tragic that has shocked us all," Psaroudas said. "The animal was obviously surprised by the climbers. The use of spray is often recommended, but not in our country because it is illegal, but in countries like Canada or the United States, climbers are required to have such sprays, which are used to repel the animal. "Bears, like any other animal, feel the dog as an intruder in their space. However, we cannot know the sequence of events." Panos Stefanou, a spokesperson for Arcturos, a non-profit wildlife organization, told Greek state-run television station, ERT, that the bear was probably trying to protect itself. "This is more a defensive behavior, not an attack. The bear is trying to push back what it sees as a threat," he said. India will no longer differentiate between state and non-state terrorism: DMK MP Kanimozhi
Athens [Greece], May 29 (ANI): DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, leading an all-party delegation to Greece, said India has made it clear that it will no longer distinguish between individual acts of terror and state-sponsored terrorism. While interacting with the Indian diaspora on Wednesday (local time), she added that the government's outreach, which includes opposition MPs, reflects a united stance against cross-border terrorism and a firm resolve to say 'no more' after years of suffering. 'Our Prime Minister and the Government of India have made a decision to reach out to countries. In our delegation, except Capt Brijesh Chowta, all of us are from the opposition parties. Our Prime Minister and the country have clearly stated that we will no longer differentiate between state-sponsored terrorism and terrorist activities of individuals and groups. India has suffered enough, and the time has come to say no more,' Kanimozhi said. Earlier, an all-party delegation led by Kanimozhi interacted with the Athens-based newspaper Kathimerini in Athens on Wednesday (local time) as part of the government's diplomatic outreach to highlight India's stance on terrorism. 'The members of the delegation led by Kanimozhi held a constructive interaction with the editorial board of Kathimerini during which they conveyed India's 'new normal' policy on terrorism. The delegation aims to brief international partners on India's response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and its broader fight against cross-border terrorism while engaging with leaders in Spain, Greece, Slovenia, Latvia, and Russia.
