NHS Lothian nurse becomes first nurse in Scotland to be awarded prestigious Fellowship
The Fellowship, hosted by the School of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow, has typically been awarded to doctors, but NHS Lothian nurse and clinical academic Kath Williamson was one of four recipients chosen in the 2024 round. An NHS Lothian nurse has become the first nurse in Scotland to have been awarded a prestigious three-year Chief Scientist Office Early Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. The Fellowship, hosted by the School of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow, has typically been awarded to doctors, but NHS Lothian nurse and clinical academic Kath Williamson was one of four recipients chosen in the 2024 round, starting her Fellowship in February 2025. Prof Juliet MacArthur, Chief Nurse Research and Development for NHS Lothian, said: 'On behalf of my colleagues across NHS Lothian, I want to express how proud we are of Kath's remarkable achievement. "Securing a Chief Scientist Office Early Postdoctoral Fellowship is a significant milestone in any clinical academic's career, but to be the first nurse in Scotland to do so is truly ground-breaking. 'Kath's success is a testament to her dedication, expertise, and the value of supporting nurses to pursue research careers. The University of Glasgow's School of Health & Wellbeing provides an excellent environment for her work, with its strong focus on tackling health inequalities and improving care for underserved populations. "We look forward to seeing the impact of her research and clinical innovation in bariatric care, and the inspiration it will provide to other nurses across Scotland.' Kath's Fellowship programme of work includes the HOPE (Housebound Obesity Pathways and Engagement) study, looking at how housebound people with obesity access weight management interventions. The wider aim being grant applications for a trial of weight management for housebound people with obesity, with outcomes including improved function, quality of life, mental health and reduced service utilisation. Alongside research, the Fellowship enables Kath to develop new clinical practices in a first of its kind role as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for bariatric care in the community, one day per week. This unique role, hosted by Community Nursing in Midlothian HSCP, aims to support more effective cross-sector care, in a clinical area where the evidence base is poor but care needs are rising. Kath, has over 25 years of experience with NHS Lothian in a variety of different roles, including District Nurse, bank nurse, NRS Fellow and most recently, Manual Handling Advisor. Since 2016, Kath has been supported in developing her research career through the Nursing Midwifery and Allied Health Professional (NMAHP) Research Capacity Building Programme, led by Prof Juliet MacArthur and Andy Peters. She added: 'I hope that being the first nurse to be awarded a CSO Early Post-doctoral Fellowship will bring other opportunities to role model and promote the potential for nurses to be successful in pursuing clinical academic careers.'

'I loved the 90s. Take me back' star of BBC comedy set ....in the 90s
Star and co-writer of BBC comedy Power of Parker simply loved the 90s. Sian Gibson is back as Kath in series 2 of the series, set in the 1990s. She said: "I loved the 90s. Take me back." In series 2, Kath, Martin and her sister Diane are all trying their best to get along. Martin (Conleth Hill) is down on his luck, Diane is running Parker's with Sandy Copper (Steve Pemberton) and Kath just wants everyone to be happy. But Kath's constant interfering changes all of their lives forever. They'll need to depend on each other now more than ever, but who do they trust? This is what Sian, the star of Car Share with Bolton's Peter Kay has to say about series 2, now showing on BBC and iPlayer Tell us where we pick up with Kath in Series 2? The series is set two years later in 1992 and Kath thinks she has exactly what she always wanted in life. She's living with Martin and finally has her man to herself, and she's also rekindled her relationship with her sister, Diane. She should be living the dream, but instead she's worried that Martin has 'lost his sparkle' now he's not the boss of his own electrical store, and she is still feeling guilty for betraying Diane. There's a power shift between Martin and Diane, and Kath feels stuck in the middle of them both. Kath thinks if she can sort out Martin and Diane's problems then everyone will be happy, and they can all live happily ever after. Unfortunately, her interfering doesn't go to plan and she manages to make everything worse, throwing them all into chaos. How has Kath's relationship with Martin and Diane changed since Series 1? Kath and Diane have put their differences behind them and are getting to know each other again and actually getting on! Kath wants to make it up to Diane for having an affair with her husband. (So yeah, she has a lot of making up to do! ) Kath has never really stood up for herself but she won't let anyone hurt her sister and will happily stand up for Diane whatever the cost. This is all much to the annoyance of Martin who hates his girlfriend being mates with his ex wife, meaning Kath is having to sneak around behind his back to see Diane. Kath and Martin are scraping a living on Kath's wage, but Kath has never been money motivated and loves that she now has Martin all to herself with their relationship now out in the open. Kath senses that Martin isn't happy with his new arrangement and does what she can to try and make him happy. Kath has always been the eternal optimist and just wants her happy ending, but the cracks are starting to show now and she is questioning her life choices and who she can trust. This is a massive cliche, but we have such an amazing cast, crew and production team that every day was such a laugh. I feel very lucky to work with such lovely people - I can't really call it work! What can we expect from Kath in this series? It's a rollercoaster for Kath in this series, she's all over the place. In her quest to put everything right for everyone else, she has a fight at a party, gets into trouble with her dad, leans on her old friends for advice and meets a blast from her past. She's got a lot going on this series! How was the writing process for this series? Did you always know you wanted to take the characters in a new direction? Paul and I love writing this series, we know each other so well and know what will make each other laugh which is usually spending our days stuck down a YouTube rabbit hole watching early 90s Top Of the Pops episodes. Knowing the characters more this time really helped, and we knew we had to raise the stakes for the characters and increase the jeopardy. We've also added some new characters, Mic and Ash, played by Diane Morgan and Navin Chowdhry who are both fabulous and take the series in a completely new direction. Do you have a favourite outfit from Series 2? Our costume team were fantastic, and all the costumes and accessories were vintage from 1992 and earlier. Kath wears a particularly fabulous red dress in one episode but let's just say there's a lot of lycra and a lot of Spanx were used in the making of this series. What were you doing in 1992? I was starting my A-Levels in 1992. The world was my oyster. I was a wannabe goth, with dyed cherry red hair, Doc Martins and an array of band t-shirts like The Cure, The Smiths and Pearl Jam. I was using fake ID to go to Indie Nights at the local nightclub but in reality, I liked nothing better than wearing sequins and dancing to show tunes in my bedroom. What's one thing from 1992 you'd like to bring to the present day? I can't name just one thing. T'Pau, Quantum Leap, Body Shop's Dewberry Oil.. I loved the 90s. Take me back.

Kindness of strangers: a woman I'd never met heard we had flu and dropped a big pot of soup at our doorstep
It was 1996 when my husband was transferred to the small rural town of Healesville for work. In inner-city Melbourne, where we'd been living, we had a support network of neighbours, friends and family. In Healesville we didn't know a soul. It was just me and my husband, our two little kids and two dogs. We hadn't been there long when we all came down with the flu. It wasn't a cold, it was the flu – complete with aching, fevers and hallucinating. It was terrible. We did have some food in the house but not much. At some stage I tried to drive down to the shops to get us something to eat but I had to turn back because I was too sick to navigate. We lived 5km out of town so walking in wasn't an option. There were no takeaway food outlets in the town and, of course, this was long before the days of food deliveries. I didn't know any doctors nearby and, being so far from family, there was no one I could call on for help. I remember desperately saying to my husband, 'We have to feed the dogs!' We were stuck. Then there was a phone call. On the other end was a woman who worked with my husband at his new job. We'd never met but she'd got wind that we were sick and let me know she'd just dropped a big pot of soup on our doorstep. That soup saved us – even the dogs got some. It sustained us for days, until I was well enough to prepare the most basic of meals. Without that help, which came so out of the blue, I don't know what we would have done. I later got to know that woman, Kath, and learned that this is typical behaviour for her. She's a very kind-hearted, community-minded person. Kath's act of kindness made me appreciate how much small gestures can mean – as well as what a lovely act of compassion making a meal for someone is. Cooking up a big pot of soup has become my go-to thing when someone is sick. It's always appreciated. JoJo Siwa's ex Kath Ebbs asks for space to 'heal in peace'
JoJo Siwa's ex Kath Ebbs wants to "heal in peace". Kath - who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns - has responded to people "constantly" trolling them over their ex's newly confirmed romance with Chris Hughes, who she met during her time in the 'Celebrity Big Brother UK' house. In a series of posts on her Instagram Story, she wrote: "Last month was mental health month and this month is pride... "I wish people would put themselves in someone else's shoes for a moment before indulging in this kind of online toxicity. "Better yet to a person that literally did nothing wrong. I'm so sick of being gaslight over and over again by said people and the public. It needs to stop. "You don't need to choose sides, instead you could do me the courtesy of letting me in heal in peace." Kath, 27, urged their critics to "be obsessed with those that are screaming for attention", while pointing out they have "never asked for any of this". They wrote: "People constantly troll me and telling me to 'get over it' whilst simultaneously not getting over it themselves. "Go be obsessed with those that are screaming for the attention, they love it and they are build for it. "I'm not and never asked for any of this. My only crime was being in a committed loving relationship and then humiliated on a world stage. How does that make me a horrible person?" Kath said they are trying to "weather the storm", while insisting they don't owe anyone an explanation from their point of view. They continued: 'I've been working so hard to hold my own everyday through this. "Using the tools I have to weather the storm, stay sane and sit knowing I don't need to share the truth of it with the world because those that actually matter in REAL life know exactly what happened and that should be all that matters to me." Kath was in a relationship with JoJo when she entered the house, but their relationship ended at the 'Celebrity Big Brother' wrap party. Asked if their bond is platonic or romantic, JoJo paused for some time before she told The Guardian newspaper this week: 'It's not platonic any more, and it's been a beautiful development, a beautiful connection, and I'm absolutely head over heels for him and he's the same way.' JoJo dismissed speculation her relationship with Chris is a "PR stunt". She said: 'Clearly, you've never been around us. I won't ever speak for him, but for me personally, the happiness in my life just radiates off of me right now. Literally yesterday, I was massaging my cheeks; I've never [before] been in pain from smiling so much.'
