Published on: Friday, June 20, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 20, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: ACP Kasim advised that the rally be conducted peacefully and orderly, without provocation or disturbance to public order. Kota Kinabalu: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will not obstruct the planned Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 peaceful rally scheduled for this Saturday. However, organisers have been reminded to steer clear of sensitive issues involving race, religion and royalty (3R). Advertisement Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief, ACP Kasim Muda, in a response letter to the organisers, advised that the rally be conducted peacefully and orderly, without provocation or disturbance to public order. Meanwhile, the organisers, a group known as Suara Mahasiswa UMS, described the police's response this time as 'unprecedented'. 'It should be normalised as a sign of respect towards the right to assemble and express, as guaranteed under the Federal Constitution,' the group stated. The rally is expected to begin at 1pm in front of Suria Sabah shopping mall, with participants marching to Lintasan Deasoka, Gaya Street, and continuing the demonstration through Sunday. Advertisement Organisers are maintaining their demands, including firm action on the Sabah Water Department scandal, institutional reforms and suspension of individuals accused of corruption. Meanwhile, members of the public are advised to plan their journeys in advance tomorrow (June 21) due to temporary road closures in the city centre in conjunction with the 74th Official Birthday Celebration of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri. Kasim said several key roads would be closed from 5am to 10am to accommodate the official parade involving 80 contingents and estimated 10,000 participants at Padang Merdeka. 'The closures will affect five main routes leading to Padang Merdeka, namely Bulatan Bunga Raya, Bulatan Capital (Bandaran), Simpang Tiga Bukit Bendera, Jalan Dewan, and the Jalan Padang junction near KFC Bandaran,' he said in a statement. As a result, the KK Bypass will serve as the primary route for vehicles transporting parade participants, ministers, department heads and other invited guests. The full parade will begin along Jalan Dewan and Jalan Istana and end at Padang Merdeka, while Jalan Padang will serve as the designated parking area for official vehicles. The police also urged the public not to park their vehicles along the parade routes to prevent congestion and ensure the smooth flow of the event. 'We truly appreciate the cooperation and patience of the public to ensure the safety and success of this meaningful celebration,' Kasim added. PKR Sabah backs MACC probe into mining scandal
Mustapha (second right) and Kasim (to his left) watching a briefing on NMM 2025. KOTA KINABALU (June 19): Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah fully supports the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)'s investigation into the mining licence corruption scandal involving several state assemblymen. PKR Sabah chairman Datuk Ts Mustapha Sakmud emphasized that the Madani Government does not tolerate corruption, contrary to claims by other parties and an upcoming anti-corruption rally. He said MACC's move to record statements from several assemblymen and the possibility of court charges demonstrates the government's seriousness in addressing the issue. When asked whether the scandal could affect potential cooperation between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming state election, Mustapha said such investigations are part of the normal process. 'Corruption is an issue that transcends political boundaries. Other parties have also been involved and charged in court,' he said. 'However, we should not use this as a basis to reject any form of cooperation. Cooperation is not only political — it also includes working together on manifestos and shared aspirations to combat corruption in Sabah.' He was speaking to reporters after closing the Nutrition Month Malaysia (NMM) 2025 programme at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) on Thursday. Mustapha was responding to a recent statement by MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, who said two assemblymen and a businessman will be charged in connection with the alleged corruption scandal. On another note, Mustapha, who is also Deputy Higher Education Minister, lauded the annual NMM programme organised by UMS' Food Science and Nutrition Faculty for promoting awareness on shifting from 'sick care' to disease prevention. Citing the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2024, he said young adults, including university students, are consuming less fruits and vegetables, have high sugary drink intake, and lead sedentary lifestyles. He also highlighted rising concerns over mental health issues and increasing rates of overweight and obesity. 'These findings are very worrying and need to be given serious attention by all levels of society, especially our youth and students, who are the backbone of the nation. 'The health of our youth today will shape their future capabilities and competitiveness,' he said. Mustapha welcomed the initiative by UMS and supporting agencies in organising NMM 2025, stating that building a healthy generation should begin from a young age. 'This requires a comprehensive and integrated approach involving government, the private sector, industries and the public,' he added. Also present at the programme was UMS Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor.

'This initiative reflects our core belief in holistic and meaningful global education,' he said. He also commended the success of the first International Mobility Business Experience (IMBE) 2024, held from 24 November to 1 December 2024. According to him, the week-long programme was a vibrant mix of academic forums, industry visits and cultural exploration, where participants took part in insightful seminars such as the 1st Borneo International Accounting Seminar (BIAC), sustainability talks by the EcoCampus team, and engaging discussions with researchers from the Borneo Marine Research Institute. 'The industrial exposure included visits to SBH Kibing Solar New Materials, DESA Hatchery, and Cocoa Kingdom, offering participants a deeper understanding of Malaysia's renewable energy, aquaculture, and agro-based industries,' he said. Additionally, cultural elements were equally rich — featuring batik painting at Galleria Artisan, exploration of Mari Mari Cultural Village, and the warm hospitality of local communities, said Dr Kasim.

MNPD looking into phone data to try to solve 2017 cold case
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — In 2017, a woman was found shot and killed inside a vehicle outside an apartment building in South Nashville. To date, no one has been arrested in connection with the crime. MAY 2017 | Woman found shot to death in South Nashville On the morning of May 26, 2017, the MNPD received a call about a dead woman inside a white Kia Soul at an apartment complex in at 455 Swiss Avenue. 'She was seated in the driver's seat and appeared to be shot and was pronounced deceased at the scene,' Christopher Stevick, a Cold Case Unit detective with the MNPD, told News 2. The victim was identified as 31-year-old Vian Ahmed Kasim. For years, no one could be linked to the crime. 'Shooting investigations in general when there's not an immediate motive can be tough,' Stevick said. Kasim's sister told News 2 that Kasim was an entrepreneur and had a phone business, adding that Kasim's passion was singing. She and her family came to the U.S. from Kurdistan in 1993 and she lived in Nashville for six years before her death. 'She seemed to be really active and trying to establish herself and had established herself in Nashville and was pretty driven to be a small business owner,' Stevick said. Stevick said that Kasim was not a resident of the apartment complex near where her body was found, but had a friend who lived there. Stevick told News 2 that no surveillance video was submitted in the case, making it more difficult to solve. However, there have been some investigative leads. 'Some of these leads are leads towards potentially new information. Some of these are leads that point to specific people,' Stevick said. 'There are several of them and that's one of the challenges with these cases.' There is a deep investigation needed for several potential leads, Stevick said. On top of that, three cell phones that belonged to Kasim were found in the vehicle. ⏩ With new technology, the MNPD is now the process of taking another look through phone data. 'Now, we have new technology. It's best practice [that] as new technology emerges and advances, we always want to take another look,' Stevick said. If you have any information regarding the murder, you're asked to call the Cold Case Homicide Unit at MNPDColdCase@ or call 615-74-CRIME. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Vice-Chancellor: UMS, Water Department must get their act together
Published on: Friday, June 06, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 06, 2025 By: Larry Ralon, Rahim Matnin Text Size: Dr Kasim expressed appreciation to the State Government and JANS for their commitment to resolving the matter. Kota Kinabalu: UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor said close cooperation between the university and the Sabah Water Department (JANS) is crucial in tackling the water supply issues at the university. He said with a campus community of more than 23,000, a reliable and sufficient water supply is essential for the continuity of academic activities and overall campus welfare. Advertisement 'We have 23,000 students, as well as lecturers and administrators. In addition, we have visiting professors and international students. So what is important is the water supply is stable,' he said. Dr Kasim expressed appreciation to the State Government and JANS for their commitment to resolving the matter. 'UMS has been in Sabah for 30 years. We've produced over 100,000 graduates, specialists and professionals in various fields. So cooperation to resolve the water issue is very much needed now,' he said. According to him, the water issue at UMS is not a major problem and can be resolved amicably through discussions and mutual understanding. 'The problem has been overly politicised. In truth, it's a small issue between UMS and JANS. If we can resolve that, there's really no problem,' he added. He expressed gratitude to the State Government for its ongoing support of UMS over the years in various forms, including scholarships, research grants and academic endowments. 'The State Government has contributed significantly to UMS. So if matters such as water supply can also be given proper attention, it would be very helpful. And thankfully, there has been public awareness,' he said. He also thanked the public and netizens for their concern about the water issues affecting UMS students. Dr Kasim said the water supply on campus has already begun to stabilise, especially with the current semester break and the expectation of rainfall in the coming week. 'Right now, the water supply has improved. It's the semester break, and rain is forecasted next week. We hope the water supply remains consistent. Of course, we understand there are challenges such as piping and infrastructure, and we take note of that,' he added. He also thanked Shahelmey for holding the press conference to clarify the current situation and dispel any misunderstandings. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
