Writers call for appointment of administrator to Kannada Sahitya Parishat
Prominent Kannada writer S.G. Siddaramaiah demanded that the State government immediately appoint an administrator to the Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP), citing financial irregularities and an authoritarian style of functioning by its president, Mahesh Joshi. Addressing a press conference organised by the Kannada Naadu Nudi Jagruti Samiti at the Patrika Bhavan in Ballari on Friday, Mr. Siddaramaiah expressed deep concern for the Kannada literary institution under Mr. Joshi. 'Since Mr. Joshi assumed office, the autonomous character of the parishat has been undermined. Instead of promoting a healthy cultural atmosphere, he has created a climate of hostility, mismanagement, and repression,' he said. He accused the president of failing to maintain transparency by not disclosing financial statements related to the Kannada Sahitya Sammelans held in Haveri and Mandya that were funded by taxpayers' money. 'Mr. Joshi has taken a unilateral and arbitrary approach and even attempted to alter the Parishat's bylaws. Literary conventions should serve as platforms for art, literature and culture not for political propaganda,' Siddaramaiah said. Welcoming the upcoming 88th Kannada Sahitya Sammelan in Ballari, he urged that the event must avoid unnecessary expenditure. 'There are clear signs of financial mismanagement under Mr. Joshi's leadership. The government should intervene, appoint an administrator, and conduct a thorough audit. If irregularities are confirmed, he must be removed from the post; if not, appropriate measures may be taken to continue his tenure,' he said. Jayaprakash Gowda, president of the Karnataka Sangha, Mandya, clarified that the protest was not against the parishat but against the individual at its helm. He alleged that 20 amendments to the parishat's proposed bylaw revisions were designed to centralise authority, marginalising district and taluk bodies to consolidate control. 'As sum of ₹30 crore was granted by the government for the Mandya Sahitya Sammelan, of which Kannada Sahitya Parishat received ₹2.5 crore for which Joshi has yet to provide a proper account. The 2023–24 annual report and auditor's findings already highlight irregularities in membership records, development works, and building renovations,' he noted. 'In the 108-year history of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, no one has ever claimed daily travel allowances for their literary service. However, Mr. Joshi has claimed a total annual expenditure of ₹22 lakh under travel and related allowances. Recent literary conventions in the State have become increasingly extravagant, reduced merely to food, snacks, and festivity. By conducting these events in an arbitrary and self-serving manner, Mr. Joshi is displaying an authoritarian approach, and the protest against him will now be intensified,' he added. Writer Vasundhara Bhoopathi condemned Mr. Joshi's alleged harassment of office staff and pointed out the unprecedented postponement of the annual general body meeting scheduled in Sandur. Meera Shivalingayya, convenor of the Mandya Sahitya Sammelan, expressed deep disappointment over Mr. Joshi's conduct at the event and declared that statewide protests would continue against his authoritarian tendencies. Sunanda Jayaram of the Women Farmers' Association and Janagere Venkataramaiah also spoke at the press meet. S_G_Siddaramaiah_(1) S_G_Siddaramaiah_(2)

Thug Life petition abuse of law process: Kannada Sahitya Parishat
Bengaluru: Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP), the apex body pertaining to Kannada literature, Friday claimed the petition filed by Raajkamal Films International Chennai, producers of Kamal Haasan-starrer Thug Life, is an abuse of the process of law. The KSP, through its president Mahesh Joshi, has sought impleadment, opposing Raajkamal Films International's petition. Appearing for KSP, senior advocate S Basavaraj slammed Kamal's controversial remark that Kannada language originated from Tamil. Basavaraj said he has high regard for Kamal as an actor and even gave the example of his silent movie, Pushpaka Vimaana, which won accolades. According to Basavaraj, the actor set his own house on fire by his own conduct and now he is pleading before the high court with the request, "Please douse the flames." One cannot be an arsonist and a fire-fighter at the same time, he added. Justice M Nagaprasanna adjourned the case hearing while granting time to Raajkamal Films International to file their objections. The undertaking given by the petitioners that they will not release the film in Karnataka until the matter is resolved after holding dialogue with Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce will continue, the judge said, while orally repeating the suggestion made by the court earlier that "discretion is the best part of valour". Discretion is the best part of valour, Karnataka High Court reminds makers of Thug Life film
The High Court of Karnataka on Friday asked actor Kamal Haasan's Raajkamal Films International (RKFI), Chennai, to file its statement of objections, if any, against the applications filed by the Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) and an advocate, who want to be part of proceedings in its petition seeking protection for the release of the Tamil film Thug Life in Karnataka. Justice M. Nagaprasanna passed the order while adjourning further hearing till June 20 on the petition, filed by the RKFI, which had also sought a direction to retrain the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) from issuing any instruction in relation to banning release and distribution of Thug Life in Karnataka as the KFCC had demanded an apology from Mr. Haasan for his controversial statement that 'Kannada is born out of Tamil'. Mr. Haasan is one of the directors of the RKFI. 'Stupid statement' Earlier, Senior Advocate S. Basavaraj, who appeared for the KSP, termed as a 'stupid statement' the actor's remark on Kannada, while placing some books before the court on historical background of the language. Mr. Basavaraj also questioned how a person, who set his house on fire can seek the help from the court to douse the blaze, while pointing out that opposition for the release the film was a result of his statement on Kannada without any basis. 'Again, I am repeating, discretion is the best part of valour,' the court orally told the petitioner's advocate while adjourning the hearing, to which the petitioner's advocate said he would convey it to the petitioner. Earlier observations During an earlier hearing on June 3, the court had said it was 'of the prima facie opinion that, if a sentence of apology had been included while concluding the communication [from Mr. Haasan to the KFCC], it would have concluded/ended all controversy and the unrest or disharmony in the State of Karnataka' on release of the film. Also, the court on June 5 adjourned the hearing as the petitioner's advocate had said the screening of the movie would not be insisted upon till the dialogue/trialogue with the KFCC to resolve the issue after Mr. Haasan chose not to go by the suggestion made by the court to apologise to put an end to the controversy.

KSP: Henderson County deputy shoots, kills man armed with a machete
EVNASVILLE – A Henderson County sheriff's deputy fatally shot a 64-year-old man who allegedly threatened family members with a machete Monday evening and charged at the deputy, according to the Kentucky State Police. Charles Powell Jr. died from his injuries while being transported to a hospital following the shooting in the 100 block of Eighth Street in Corydon, Kentucky, KSP stated in a news release Tuesday. The Henderson County Sheriff's Office was called to a disturbance just before 7:30 p.m. Monday, according to the preliminary investigation conducted by KSP Post 16 Henderson. When deputies arrived at the scene, they encountered Powell, who allegedly refused to drop the machete and "came at the responding deputy," the KSP release states. In their own release, the Henderson County Sheriff's office said the deputy initially "discharged their less-lethal Taser," but Powell kept advancing. The deputy then fired on Powell. The KSP did not state how many times the deputy fired or where the shots struck Powell. Agency officials likewise did not say what may have prompted Powell to allegedly take up the machete in the first place. The deputy, who has not been named, provided life-saving measures until emergency medical services arrived, but Powell died while being transported to a hospital, according to the release. No officers were injured in the incident. Troopers and detectives arrived on scene after the shooting conduct a preliminary investigation. KSP are investigating the shooting at the request of the Henderson County Sheriff's Office. 'KSP has statewide jurisdiction and investigates officer-involved shootings throughout the commonwealth as requested by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies,' the KSP release states. 'KSP is committed to being transparent while ensuring the integrity of the investigation. 'To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP's standard operating procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts have been gathered."
