Bay Area prepares for ‘No Kings' day of protest
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Following a week of protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Trump administration, more action is planned for this weekend across the Bay Area. Indivisible SF is helping to organize Saturday's 'No Kings' protests around the Bay Area. The grassroots group said it is alarmed by recent actions by the Trump administration, ICE, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and is planning these events to push back. 'The trump administration wants to suppress dissent and snatch community members off the streets, and we are non-violently saying no to that,' Peter Hosey, who is with Indivisible SF, told KRON4. Over the past week, thousands of people have attended rallies across the Bay Area. While these protests have been overwhelmingly peaceful, there have been some acts of violence and vandalism, with hundreds of people being detained or arrested. Hosey said that organizers of this weekend's rallies have been in contact with law enforcement and city leaders to ensure that the protests remain peaceful, and they are discouraging violence and vandalism. Throughout the past week, city leaders and law enforcement around the Bay Area have said they will allow people to express their free speech rights, but that vandalism and violence will not be tolerated. Hosey says they do not know how many people will attend this weekend, but they are expecting a large turnout, and they are optimistic that things will go smoothly. 'We want to have a nice, empowering vibe,' Hosey said. The San Francisco rally is set to start at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Dolores Park, the Oakland rally begins at Wilma Chan Park at noon, and the San Jose protest begins at noon at St. James Park along North First Street. San Jose fraud prevention expert charged with healthcare fraud
(KRON) — A woman who worked as a security manager at Nvidia and regularly spoke as an expert on fraud prevention was charged with submitting 167 fraudulent healthcare claims against the Santa Clara-based tech company, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office announced Friday. Faranak Firozan, 47, is accused of submitting the fraudulent claims between November 2020 and January 2024 to Nvidia's self-insured health plan, according to prosecutors. The DA's office said that many of the claims were either entirely made up or that bills were altered by changing service dates. 'Providers verified that services listed in her claims were either not performed at all or were duplicated claims,' the DA's office wrote. The scheme began to unravel in August 2024, according to prosecutors, after the California Department of Insurance received a suspected fraudulent claim referral from Cigna, which administered Nvidia's health plan. Motorcyclist suffers 'life-changing injury' in San Jose hit-and-run 'On her LinkedIn page, Firozan described herself as an expert in abuse prevention systems and fraud investigations for financial institutions,' the DA's office wrote. 'In 2020, she provided training on cyber laundering for the Information Systems Security Association Silicon Valley Chapter.' Firozan was charged with altering medical records with fraudulent intent and preparing false statements in connection with insurance claims. She also faces an added aggravated white-collar crime enhancement. Firozan is scheduled to be arraigned on July 15. Vietnamese coffee chain opens first Hayward location
(KRON) – A Vietnamese coffee chain has opened in downtown Hayward. Tram Cream Coffee has opened its first Hayward location. The soft opening for the Hayward location was June 3. The owner of Tram Cream Coffee in Hayward, Khoa Dinh, told that the store has been much busier than expected. Per Tram Cream Coffee's website, the cafe is where Vietnamese tradition meets innovation with bold flavors and unique brewing techniques. Dinh said the tiramisu latte and the matcha latte top sellers for the younger crowd. Other patron favorites are the egg coffee and cream coffee. Oakland coffee house at center of Star of David hat controversy sued by DOJ For patrons who may not enjoy coffee, Tram has cold brew fruit teas, like peach orange tea and running dragon tea. Dinh said he is looking forward to revitalizing downtown Hayward and has seen an influx of people in the area since the soft opening. The grand opening does not have an exact date; however, the cafe is open. Tram Coffee's address is 1075 B St. The coffee shop is open every day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tram Cream Coffee also has locations in San Jose, Sacramento and Garden Grove. Oakland PD asks for help solving fatal shooting cold case
(KRON) – The Oakland Police Department is asking for public assistance in solving the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Bert Brigham III. Brigham's death occurred almost four years ago on July 18, 2021, in the 1900 block of Foothill Boulevard. Oakland business looted following anti-ICE protest OPD has released images of four male suspects in their 20s and vehicles that may be connected to the case (pictured below). Per OPD, a white Kia Optima, a blue Toyota Camry, and a dark Honda Accord were the cars associated with the suspects. Woman arrested after stealing designer perfume, jewelry: PD
(KRON) – A woman was arrested after shoplifting jewelry and designer perfumes, according to the San Mateo Police Department. Recently, Macy's loss prevention officers alerted the department to a woman shoplifting. According to San Mateo police, the suspect stole two perfumes, one called Bad Boy by Carolina Herrera and the other called Gucci Guilty. San Mateo police referred to the irony of the perfume's name on its social media. The female suspect also shoplifted a cubic zirconia ring. Runaway thief stole $1K in make-up from Colma Target: police The suspect was arrested shortly after the theft. San Mateo PD said on its social media, 'Stealing isn't stylish, folks.
