Bengaluru 24-Hour Water Supply Shutdown on June 19 for Pipeline Upgrade

Bengaluru will have no water supply for 24 hours. The water cut starts at 6 AM on June 19 and ends at 6 AM on June 20. This is because of work on the Cauvery water supply system. The BWSSB (Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board) announced this. Why is water supply stopping? There are two main reasons: A new big pipe (3000 mm wide) is being added to the water system. This is happening at the T.K. Halli pumping station. It will help improve water supply in the future. KPTCL (Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd) will do power maintenance. Because of this, BWSSB has to stop water pumping. Which areas will be affected? These parts of Bengaluru will be affected: Bommanahalli Yeshwanthpur Mahadevapura Bengaluru South Yelahanka Dasarahalli Byatarayanapura Rajarajeshwari Nagar Kengeri People in these places may have no water or very low pressure. State to fill up 35,000 vacancies in power sector, regularise 532 civic workers

Bengaluru:Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday announced that his government will begin phased recruitment to fill 35,000 vacant posts in the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (KPTCL) and declared the regularisation of services of 532 civic workers in the department. Speaking at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Employees' Association, the CM said the state government is committed to fulfilling its promises to the workforce. 'Ours is a government that walks the talk. We will examine your demands and take appropriate action,' he said. Addressing concerns over pensions, the Chief Minister said the National Pension Scheme (NPS) was implemented by the central government. 'But we have already promised to implement the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) in our election manifesto. We will hold discussions and take necessary steps in that direction.' Siddaramaiah lauded the power corporation employees for their service and underscored Karnataka's legacy in the electricity sector. 'Karnataka was the first in Asia to produce electricity in 1902, launched its first supply company in Bengaluru in 1905, and supplied power to the Mysore Palace by 1908,' he said. He noted that the state now generates 34,000 megawatts, with plans to scale it to 60,000 megawatts, a move aimed at ensuring at least seven hours of daytime power supply to farmers. 'The electricity sector is essential. You have been working with dedication. The government is ready to meet your demands. We are with you — and we ask you to stand with us too,' he told the employees. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who also spoke at the event, asserted that the Congress government will not permit the privatisation of Electricity Supply Companies (ESCOMs) as long as it remains in power. 'As long as Siddaramaiah and I are in power, we won't allow privatisation of ESCOMs in Karnataka. There were attempts to allow entry of private players, but I did not allow it,' Shivakumar said. He claimed that there was significant pressure from the Centre during his earlier tenure as the Energy Minister, especially after the BJP government privatised ESCOMs in Mumbai, Delhi, and other cities. However, he said he resisted the pressure and stood by the efficiency of the corporation's workforce. 'When I took over, the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) loss stood at 19–20 per cent. We brought it down to 10 per cent, which is now a benchmark in the country,' Shivakumar said, noting that most states continue to report losses of 17–18 per cent. He added that during his tenure, the state's generation capacity doubled from 11,000 MW to 23,000 MW, and that 24,000 employees were recruited through a transparent process, ensuring job creation without corruption. Highlighting innovations like the Pavagada Solar Park, Shivakumar said the government adopted a land-leasing model rather than acquisition, which allowed farmers to retain ownership and earn annual rental income — a model later adopted by the Union government

Karnataka gets two years to become eligible for RDSS

The Central government has given the Energy Department two years to become eligible for the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) by recovering all pending arrears of electricity supply companies (escoms), Energy Minister K.J. George said on Wednesday. When Union Minister of Power Manohar Lal Khattar was recently in Bengaluru for an event, he advised the Energy Department to prepare a road map for the recovery of pending dues. Karnataka is one of the very few States that missed out on RDSS as escoms were owed over ₹8,500 crore from various government departments at the time. 'Then, we did not even try as we knew there was no time and we were not eligible. But now, we have been given two years and we want to use the scheme as it would greatly benefit our escoms. They will get 60% subsidy (around ₹10,000 crore) for building the distribution network. The Union Minister has asked us to get the urban local bodies to impose a 2% cess to aid in the repayment of power dues,' Mr. George explained. Eligibility for the scheme will also help consumers who install smart meters as a 15% subsidy (up to ₹900) will be provided by the Union government. It is now mandatory for all new and temporary connections to install smart meters in the State. Mr. George said that he also wants to propose to the Cabinet that smart meters be installed in all government offices. 765 kV substations to be set up In a bid to enhance the transmission network of the State, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) will set up three 765 kv substations - one each in Central, North, and South Karnataka. 'We will be one of the few States to have these substations,' said Pankaj Kumar Pandey, managing director, KPTCL. He further said that in urban areas where getting right of way is a problem, existing transmission corridors are being used to replace conductors with high performance conductors with double or four times the capacity. High towers, which will occupy less space and leaves less footprint are also being set up to reduce transmission losses. These are all part of a blueprint to increase the transmission capacity in the next five years.
