Satish Jarkiholi says he is an aspirant for KPCC president's post

I am an aspirant for the post of KPCC president. But it is for the party high command to take a decision on the appointment. We are sure it will take a decision at the appropriate time, Minister Satish Jarkiholi said in Hukkeri on Friday. 'It is true that I am an aspirant. But then, the high command decides on such matters. It is natural. The senior leadership of the party will decide if there is a need for a change or when it is effected. It is their prerogative,' he told reporters. 'To a query on whether he was preparing for it, he said he was not putting any pressure on anyone, for this. We have to wait and see when the high command will do it,' he said. On the alleged viral video of MLA B.R. Patil regarding the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Scheme scam, he said it needs to be investigated, before it could be responded to. 'The truth will come out from the investigation. I will not insist on any investigation. Let the department conduct the investigation on its own. That is their duty,' he said. He said he was in favour of dividing Belagavi district to create smaller districts. 'However, the State government will take a decision about it as per due process. There are some difficulties, but we are sure of addressing them,' he said. He also said there was were no differences between the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar over transfer of officers. 'All transfers are happening as per law. I do not think anyone is misusing powers in this issue,' he said in response to a question.

'List Included His Name, Was Invited': Congress Debunks Shashi Tharoor's 'Exclusion' Claim

Last Updated: KPCC chief Sunny Joseph denied Shashi Tharoor's claim of being excluded from the Congress star campaigners list for the Nilambur bypoll, stating his name was included. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief Sunny Joseph on Friday denied Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's claims of being left out of the party's star campaigners list for the bypoll in the Nilambur constituency in Thiruvananthapuram. Joseph also said the party had published the list officially and had submitted it to the Election Commission, and that Tharoor was abroad with the parliamentary delegation during that time. 'We had published the list and submitted it to the Election Commission," Joseph said while talking to reporters. 'The list included Shashi Tharoor's name. He was abroad most of the time, and then in Delhi. I don't know if he even came to Kerala," he added. On Thursday, Tharoor had said he has differences of opinion with some in the party leadership, but he is not going to speak about them in light of the bypoll in the Nilambur constituency. Tharoor had also claimed Congress had excluded him from its list of star campaigners. Speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, Tharoor, who came under attack from some party colleagues for supporting the Modi government's stand following the Pahalgam terror attack, said that the Congress, its values, and its workers are very dear to him. He said he has worked closely with party workers for 16 years and regards them as close friends and brothers. Tharoor, however, did not clarify whether his differences of opinion were with the national or state leadership. The Thiruvananthapuram MP indicated that he might talk about those differences after the bypoll results. Tharoor's remarks come at a time when the Congress has not publicly backed him, after a party leader described him as the 'super spokesperson of the BJP. Former Congress MP Udit Raj had termed Tharoor as the 'super spokesperson" of the BJP over his remarks during his international delegation visits when he allegedly said that India crossed the LoC for the first time in 2015. Responding to the same, Tharoor on Thursday termed it as a 'misconception". Defending his decision to accept the Centre's invite to head one of the delegations, Tharoor said that when he became the chairman of the External Affairs Committee of the Parliament, he had made it clear that he was focused on India's foreign policy and its national interest and not the foreign policy of the Congress and BJP. 'I have not changed my line. When an issue concerning the nation comes up, we are all obligated to work and speak for the country. What I said during 'Operation Sindoor' was my own opinion. 'The Centre asked for my services. Indeed, my party did not. So, I proudly did my duty as an Indian citizen," he said. First Published: June 20, 2025, 13:15 IST

Congress in damage control mode over Satheesan's Jamaat remarks

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As leader of opposition V D Satheesan's attempt to 'whitewash' Jamaat-e-Islami, backfired politically in Nilambur, the Congress has started damage control efforts. KPCC president Sunny Joseph has met powerful Muslim and Christian leaders in this regard. The move comes days before the visit of Congress general secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi to Nilambur which is part of her LS constituency. Sunny Joseph, who is close to Thamarassery Bishop Remigiose Inchananiyil, met the latter on Friday. The meeting came after the Catholic Congress under the powerful Thamarassery Diocese issued a strong statement against Congress - Welfare Party tie-up. The KPCC chief reportedly clarified the party's stand to the bishop. He also sought the Church's support. According to sources close to the Church, Sunny Joseph held talks with Catholic Congress leaders. The KPCC president also met Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, the president of Samastha Kerala Jem-Iyyathul Ulama, on Thursday. There is criticism among UDF partners that the opposition leader's 'certificate' to the Jamaat-e-Islami was an unwanted one. They are of the view that it gave both the CPM and BJP a political weapon which could have a far-reaching effect even in national politics. 'There is still suspicion over the controversial stand of Jamaat on Indian democracy, religious state and Constitution,' a Congress PAC member told TNIE. 'It is no surprise that almost all prominent Muslim community organisations including Samastha Kerala Jem-Iyyathul Ulma, and Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen, and the Catholic Congress, a lay organisation of Syro-Malabar Catholics of Thamarassery Diocese, had come out strongly against the Jamaat-e-Islami- Congress alleged tie-up,' he added. The Congress-UDF leadership has decided not to entertain questions about Jamaat-e-Islami, Welfare Party and Congress 'tie-up'. AICC general secretary K C Venugopal's attempt to evade questions about the controversy, and senior leader K Muraleedharan playing down the issue are seen as part of this strategy. The party has decided to focus on the governance of the LDF government. There is also apprehension that though Venugopal's attack against CM's alleged anti- Malappuram remark was a success, the Jamaat controversy spoiled the edge. 'There are chances that the RSS -BJP may use the Jamaat controversy against the Gandhi family and the Congress in north India,' a senior Congress leader told TNIE. 'As state assembly elections are approaching, we do not want any kind of political debate on that,' he said.

Kharge rules out Team Siddu rejig

KALABURAGI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has ruled out any reshuffle in the Siddaramaiah cabinet. Speaking to reporters at his residence here, Kharge said that the party would inform if there is a reshuffle or change of guard at the KPCC. Kharge said these issues did not figure when chief minister Siddaramaiah and deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar met him and Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Tuesday. 'Our discussions were on the stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium and caste survey,' he said. Kharge said the stampede has worried everybody, including the Congress. 'It should not have happened. I, myself, and Rahul Gandhi have told the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister to take all necessary steps in future to prevent such incidents. They briefed us about the incident and the steps taken aftermath including suspension of police officers, ordering magisterial inquiry and judicial inquiry and payment of compensation to the aggrieved,' he said. Reacting to BJP's demand for the resignation of the chief minister and the Deputy CM, owning moral responsibility for the stampede, Kharge questioned whether UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath had resigned when the stampede took place during Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj. 'They expressed anger at me when I raised questions on the stampede at Kumbh Mela,' Kharge said. Kharge said the caste survey was conducted 10 years ago. 'Various community leaders have urged me and the government to conduct resurvey. We have advised the CM and DCM to conduct resurvey without rejecting the survey report given by Kantaraj Commission. Resurvey would be done to include those castes and sub-castes which were genuine to be included in the OBC but were not included in the previous survey,' said Kharge.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge justifies fresh caste census in Karnataka

Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge justified the decision to conduct a fresh caste census in Karnataka, saying it is necessary to reflect current realities. 'The last caste census was conducted ten years ago during Mr. Siddaramaiah's first tenure as Chief Minister. Much has changed since then, with several communities being reclassified. A new survey is essential to assess the present socio-economic and educational status of each caste. The same parameters used in the previous census will be applied again, along with new parameters,' he explained. No Cabinet reshuffle When asked about the Congress high command's recent meeting with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Mr. Kharge clarified that the issues of Cabinet reshuffle and change of KPCC president were not on the agenda. 'We discussed several matters, including the caste census and the tragic stampede at M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru, which claimed 11 lives and injured 56 others during the RCB's IPL victory celebration,' he said. Responding to the opposition's demand for resignation of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister over the stampede, Mr. Kharge questioned whether Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had stepped down following the stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. 'Calls for resignation are justified only when there is deliberate wrongdoing. This was a tragic incident that should never have occurred. We are deeply saddened by the loss of young lives. It is heartbreaking to witness the grief of their parents. Our focus must now be on ensuring that such tragedies are not repeated,' he said.
