Lake regulars raise questions on absence of lifeguard at pool, lack of maintenance
Kolkata: Sixteen-year-old Shivam Kumar Singh's drowning at the public swimming pool at Rabindra Sarobar raised several questions about the safety and maintenance of the water body. "Poor maintenance, absence of a lifeguard, no check on whether people entering the pool are swimmers or not, low dissolved oxygen and high sedimentation with unwanted aquatic plants and weeds could have all combined to lead to lead to the young boy's tragic death," said environmentalist Somendra Mohan Ghosh, a regular at the Lake. "KMDA needs to address these issues to create a safer environment for pool users." Some pointed out that that the condition of the public swimming pool had deteriorated over the years. "The pool could have been better maintained. I visited the place nearly after 30 years on Sunday. Its condition has worsened," said Aparupa Saha, a Siliguri resident, who used to live in Dhakuria. "Earlier, a lifeguard would be posted at the public pool. But now, no one, other than regular swimmers in the pool, is there to watch out for the others in the water. The boy could have been saved had there been a lifeguard," a Lake regular said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Also, the pool is filled with algae and weeds, which have not been cleaned." Ghosh demanded regular maintenance and inspection, along with proper supervision by lifesavers. "Those coming for a swim should meet the qualifications required," Ghosh said. KMDA authorities conceded that there had been no lifeguard to keep a constant watch on the pool for the past few years. "The earlier lifeguard's tenure ended in 2017-18. After the Kolkata Improvement Trust (KIT) merged with KMDA, no new post for a lifesaver or lifeguard was created. It is a policy matter, which has to be decided by the higher authorities," a KMDA official said. "At the same time, it's practically impossible to find out if each and everyone entering the pool knows how to swim or not. " The official claimed they had been conducting regular clean-up of the water body. "Some measures will be taken after a discussion," said a govt official.

Metro seeks 20cr from KMDA for Chingrighata subway
Kolkata: Metro has asked KMDA to deposit 50% — Rs 20 crore — of the cost of the proposed underpass at Chingrighata. Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), the implementing agency of the New Garia-Airport corridor, will share half the cost "according to the agreement with the state govt". KMDA has also been asked to approve the construction methodology submitted by RVNL three years ago. TOI reported on May 28 that "RVNL is preparing the detailed project report for the proposed three-way pedestrian underpass at Chingrighata", after cops decided to withhold traffic blocks at the busy crossing for two weekend nights until the underpass was built. The weekend traffic regulation is needed for bridging the last 366m viaduct gap of the Orange line's Ruby-Sector V section. Girder-launching work at the Chingrighata crossing has been stalled since Feb 2. RVNL cannot meet its June 2025 deadline to complete the 8km Phase II. KMC's nod for the underpass' basic design, submitted by RVNL in June 2022, came on April 8, 2025. "Even as the most crucial part of the project remains stalled at Chingrighata, RVNL is going ahead with the underpass construction, as told by the state govt," a railway official said. The urban development department planned the underpass at Chingrighata along with the foot overbridge as a two-pronged approach towards reducing accidents at the busy intersection. At a proposed depth of two-and-a-half metres, the underpass would be three-and-a-half metres wide, with openings on Canal South Road, Sukantanagar, and Jal Vayu Vihar.

KMDA to raze illegal shanties under canal bridges
Kolkata: The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority has decided to demolish unauthorised structures under several canal bridges across the city. They will also set up barricades to prevent further encroachment at these spots. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The canal bridges where the authorities plan to clear encroachments and install barricades include Karunamoyee Bridge, Chetla Lock Gate bridge, Chitpore bridge, Bagmari bridge, Salt Lake slip bridge, and Chetla RCC bridge. Officials said these bridges, which span different canals across the city, have shanties under them on the canal sides. "Last year, a fire broke out in a slum under Durgapur bridge in New Alipore. The bridge was damaged and KMDA had to take up repair work. There are encroachments, like shanties and makeshift structures, under several such bridges that need to be cleared to prevent similar incidents," said a KMDA official. Chingrighata, Bypass bridge to get steel barriers for pedestrians' safety
Kolkata: In a bid to prevent risky pedestrian crossovers on the city's highest-speed corridor, the KMDA has started the process of setting up steel barricades on the stretch below Chingrighata and Ambedkar Bridge on EM Bypass following suggestions from the traffic cops. The authorities will engage an agency to execute the work at an estimated cost of about Rs 23.6 lakh. The agency will need to complete the work within a month from the date of commencement of the project. "Over 35% of all pedestrian deaths occur because they stray on the roads. Putting up iron fencing will stop jaywalking and significantly cut down accidents," a traffic police officer said. Traffic police said they had been trying to bring down the number of accidents on stretches below flyovers and bridges. "Footage has shown vehicles straying from one lane to another to overtake one another, especially near faster corridors on Bypass and its connectors," a cop said. Kolkata saw 118 pedestrian victims on the five most dangerous stretches since 2020. Bypass took the top spot, cops said.
