Texas A&M Football in Mix for Top Class of 2026 Running Back KJ Edwards
Texas A&M Football in Mix for Top Class of 2026 Running Back KJ Edwards originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Texas A&M Aggies have a Top 10 recruiting class lined up already for 2026, and they're in the hunt to add another massive piece this summer. Advertisement Head Coach Mike Elko and his staff have their sights on Carthage (Texas) product KJ Edwards, who is among the nation's Top 50 players in the Class of 2026. Edwards is also ranked the seventh-best player in the state of Texas and the third-best running back nationally in his recruiting class in the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Edwards is a highly sought-after prospect, and it appears he's coming close to making his decision on which program he wants to suit up for collegiately -- and Texas A&M fans will be excited to hear that the Aggies are still in the running for the stud tailback. According to Justin Wells, who works for On3's Inside Texas, Edwards will be making his decision on August 2, and the three programs listed as "in the mix" are the LSU Tigers, Texas Longhorns, and Texas A&M Aggies. Wells posted the news alongside footage of the Carthage, Texas native putting his elite speed on showcase and hauling in a deep pass with the ease of a wide receiver. "We call him lightning. He's very physical," Carthage head coach Scott Surratt told Times Record News. "He does a great job in the passing game. He's a third-down back just for protection and stuff. And he is durable. He's just a great player.' Advertisement As a junior, Edwards rushed for 1,789 yards and 23 touchdowns while averaging 12.6 yards per carry. He also became a dynamic target in the team's passing game, adding 30 receptions for 383 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran a 10.99 second 100-meter dash during his sophomore season of track and field. 247Sports scouting analyst Gabe Brooks' latest evaluation of Edwards pegs him as one of the top running backs in the nation, saying that he "plays at a different speed" in pads and that he "displays impressive ball skills and body control as a pass catcher." "Frequent big-play threat. Excels as a cut-and-go slasher with agility in the hole to make a man miss and hit the second level unencumbered," Brooks also wrote. "Slippery strong with a low center of gravity that fosters positive pad level. Not stylistically an open-field move-stringer, but capable of stacking cuts and gaining yards after contact." Top Aggies RB KJ Edwards Commit Issues Personal Message After Canceling Texas Visit
Top Aggies RB KJ Edwards Commit Issues Personal Message After Canceling Texas Visit originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Upon his commitment to the Texas A&M Aggies, KJ Edwards made the reason behind his decision personal. Advertisement A native of Carthage, Texas, a town of under 7,000 located three hours from College Station near the Louisiana border, Edwards is the No. 3-ranked running back prospect in the country for the class of 2026 and a top-50 prospect. He had interest from traditional SEC powerhouses like Alabama and LSU and was predicted to commit to in-state rival Texas. However, when it came down to his decision, originally scheduled for Aug. 2, Edwards was already sold on being an Aggie, prompting him to cancel his visit to Austin a few days after a June 13 visit to College Station. On3 Sports' Hayes Fawcett reported Edwards' commitment to Texas A&M on June 17, to which Edwards replied shortly after he spurned the Longhorns. AggieLand I'm home," Edwards said, according to Fawcett. Advertisement Edwards didn't need to offer any more words himself, resharing the news with a pair of home emojis. As a junior, Edwards rushed for 1,789 yards and 23 touchdowns at a 12.6-yard clip per. He also reeled in 30 catches, 383 yards and three touchdowns in helping Carthage win the Class 4A-Division II state title. The 5-foot-10, 195-pound running back joins fellow four-star recruit Jonathan Hatton Jr. Both top-10 running backs in the country, Hatton and Edwards secure the Aggies running back room that will lose Le'Veon Moss, Amari Daniels and EJ Smith after this season. Texas A&M Aggies Get Major Update on 2026 Class Ranking After KJ Edwards Commit
Texas A&M Aggies Get Major Update on 2026 Class Ranking After KJ Edwards Commit originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Mike Elko and his coaching staff are building something special in College Station. Texas A&M football now has the second-best recruiting class in college football for the Class of 2026 after securing a massive commitment on Tuesday afternoon. Advertisement KJ Edwards, who the 247Sports Composite Ranking lists as the third-best running back and seventh-best player in Texas in the Class of 2026, committed to the Aggies on Tuesday afternoon in a bit of a surprise move. The four-star prospect out of Carthage (Texas) had recently been listed as an eventual commit for rival program Texas, but LSU was also in the mix. As early as Tuesday morning, all three programs were "in the mix" for Edwards with a decision expected in August. Martinez/Austin American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images With Edwards arriving at his choice earlier than expected, his commitment propelled Texas A&M ahead of numerous programs, including SEC rival Georgia, in the 247Sports Class of 2026 Recruiting Rankings. The Aggies now sit second overall, only behind the USC Trojans. Edwards is the 17th player to commit to Texas A&M in the class, but the highest-ranked yet as the 47th overall player among 2026 prospects. Texas A&M's 2026 class includes 15 four-star prospects and 2 three-star prospects so far, including five players ranked amongst the Top 200 nationally -- in addition to Edwards, Toledo Central Catholic (Ohio) prospect Victor Singleton ranks within the Top 60 players nationally. Jordan Carter, Jonathan Hatton Jr. , Aaron Gregory, and Jermaine Kinsler are the other four Top 200 recruits. The Aggies might not be done yet, either -- Elko and his staff have been hard at work trying to land five-star Brandon Arrington, ranked the 10th-best player nationally and No. 1 athlete in the country by 247Sports. Arrington announced recently that his decision will come down to Texas A&M and Oregon, and he will make his choice on June 19 -- one day before his scheduled visit to College Station. Advertisement "It is the people at [Texas] A&M," Arrington told On3. "They all want me and they recruit me hard. From the start, it never changed with A&M. They recruited me the same, they built relationships and how consistent they have been stands out." 2026 4-star LB out of Carthage (TX) has announced his commitment date
Last weekend, Texas A&M coach Mike Elko and his staff hosted 15 elite prospects in the 2026 recruiting class. Over the past five days, the Aggies landed commitments from three-star athlete Kaeden Johnson, four-star offensive lineman Samuel Roseborough, and on Tuesday, four-star running back KJ Edwards chose the Aggies over Texas in one of the more shocking moves of the summer. All three prospects visited last weekend, resulting in commitments, so it's fair to say that Elko and his staff have built an impressive foundation that led to three of the program's early 2026 commits, led by four-star wide receiver Aaron Gregory, shutting down their recruitment over the last two weeks. Ahead of 2026 five-star cornerback Brandon Arrington's commitment on Thursday, one of the top linebacker prospects in the cycle, four-star DaQuives Beck, took his official visit to Texas A&M last weekend, and has announced his commitment date, which will take place on Tuesday, July 1. After receiving an early prediction to land with Texas A&M, it's also notable that Beck is teammates with KJ Edwards at Carthage High School, and will choose between Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and the Aggies. During his junior season at Carthage (TX) High School, Beck was named Defensive MVP of the Texas 4A D-II state championship, recording 10 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and one sack in an impressive performance. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle According to 247Sports, Beck is currently positioned as the 159th-ranked prospect in the 2026 class, the 9th-ranked linebacker, and the 23rd-ranked prospect in Texas.
