National Reading Day 2025: How To Cultivate A Reading Habit?

Last Updated: National Reading Day 2025: The day honours P.N. Panicker, the "Father of the Library and Literacy Movement," for promoting literacy and establishing public libraries. National Reading Day 2025: Observed in India every year on June 19, National Reading Day to honour Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker (P.N. Panicker), a visionary who played a pivotal role in fostering a culture of reading across Kerala. Widely revered as the 'Father of the Library and Literacy Movement", Panicker dedicated his life to promoting literacy and empowering communities through books. His tireless efforts laid the foundation for a knowledge-driven society and continue to inspire generations to embrace the transformative power of reading. Though the national observance of Reading Day is a relatively recent initiative, Kerala has been commemorating P.N. Panicker's contributions since 1996. The state began observing June 19, the day Panicker passed away in 1995, as a tribute to his transformative role in Kerala's literacy movement. In 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially declared June 19 as National Reading Day, extending the observance to a national level. The day honours P.N. Panicker's unparalleled efforts in ushering Kerala into an era of universal literacy. A teacher by profession, Panicker spearheaded a grassroots library movement in the early to mid-20th century, significantly expanding access to books and knowledge. His mission to instil the habit of reading among the masses laid the foundation for what would become one of India's most literate states. Through his leadership in establishing public libraries across Kerala, Panicker earned lasting recognition as the 'Father of the Library and Literacy Movement." The first library that he dedicated to the public was established in 1926. At the time, it was called the 'Sanadanadharmam Library". The various public libraries that he helped set up across Kerala over the next several years laid the foundation for the formation of the Travancore Library Association in 1945. The association, initially comprising 47 local libraries, later evolved into the Kerala Granthsala Sangham (KGS). After Kerala gained statehood in 1956, the KGS grew significantly to include nearly 6,000 libraries. The body ultimately became the Kerala State Library Council after being taken over by the Kerala government in 1977. National Reading Day 2025 is the perfect occasion to rekindle one's love for reading or to instil it if they never had one to begin with. It is also a great opportunity to bring together like-minded people to build a community of readers. National Reading Day focuses on the importance that books and the wisdom contained in them hold for the holistic development of humanity. What is causing the ground to shake in Kansas?

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Geologists are putting their skills to the test studying hidden threats that lie beneath the feet of thousands of Kansas residents. Kansas may not be the first state to come to mind when talking about earthquakes, but this geological occurrence will sometimes make itself known through slight tremors or even more violent shakes in some parts of the state. But is this something that everyday Kansans should be worried about? The Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) is one organization that is dedicated to understanding what is happening beneath the ground. 27 News got in touch with Shelby L. Peterie, a research geophysicist with the KGS, to learn more about how earthquakes are impacting the lives of Kansas residents and where some of the strongest earthquakes have been recorded previously in the Sunflower State. Why are so many strange fish coming out of this Kansas lake? Peterie said earthquakes are common in Kansas but most, more than 90%, are so small they are overlooked. These 'microearthquakes' sit in the shadow of stronger tremors that can start to be noticed at magnitudes of 3 or higher. 'Earthquakes that have a magnitude of M 3 or larger are usually large enough to be felt at least locally,' Peterie said. 'Events of this size occur about once a month on average the last couple of years. Prior to 2013, earthquakes of this size occurred once every 2-3 years on average.' Peterie said most earthquakes in Kansas happen close to geologic structures which are known to have faults. A fault is a fracture or zone of fractures between two pieces of rock which may cause an earthquake when they shift underground, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). 'Structures with the most seismic activity are the Central Kansas Uplift in central Kansas (Rooks and surrounding counties are the most seismically active in that area), and the Nemaha Ridge in eastern Kansas,' Peterie said. 'In recent years, there have also been earthquakes recorded in Saline and neighboring counties along the Midcontinent Geophysical Anomaly.' Found an arrowhead in Kansas? Archaeologist urges you to leave it alone KGS staff recorded an earthquake outbreak in 2013 and 2014 in south-central Kansas with each one registering at a magnitude of 3 or higher. The largest Kansas earthquake in recent memory also occurred during this time when a magnitude 4.9 earthquake was recorded in Sumner County on Nov. 12, 2014. This uptick in seismic activity was concerning as prior to 2013, earthquakes of this strength were seen only once every two or three years. 'The increased magnitude and rate of earthquakes in south-central Kansas was not consistent with natural earthquake patterns and was strongly suspected to have been induced or triggered,' Peterie said. Peterie said saltwater disposal wells in north-central Oklahoma created increased pressure underground, leading to increased earthquake activity along existing faults. The KGS later worked with the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) to create the Seismic Action Plan to keep tabs on the increased seismic activity. What are the pink mystery rocks scattered across northeast Kansas? 'In 2015, the Kansas Geological Survey began deployment of a statewide earthquake monitoring network,' Peterie said. 'There are currently 30 earthquake stations across the state detecting earthquakes in real-time. Monitoring and research at the KGS along with partnerships with other agencies and industries will ensure that any changes in seismic activity will be quickly identified and effectively addressed to minimize the impacts of induced seismicity.' Kansans shouldn't be too worried about earthquakes though as the occurrence of such tremors has decreased since 2014. Peterie said that even during the height of earthquake activity about a decade ago, the earthquakes only amounted to a nuisance for locals. 'Despite elevated seismic activity in recent years, the U.S. Geological Survey classifies the earthquake hazard/risk in Kansas as low,' Peterie said. 'In more than 150 years of earthquake reporting, even the largest earthquake in Kansas (the M 5.2 Wamego earthquake in 1867) resulted in only moderate damage.' Earthquake hits area in central Kansas

DICKINSON COUNTY (KSNT) – The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports that an earthquake was detected Thursday in central Kansas. The USGS issued a report stating that a 3.6-magnitude earthquake was detected at around 4:30 p.m. on May 15 north-northwest of the town of Herington in Dickinson County. It registered as a IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) Scale meaning that some people may have felt the earthquake or noticed things shaking around the house. Kansas does experience earthquake occasionally, with some being attributed to the Humboldt fault zone, according to the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS). Wearing contact lenses when you have allergies

There are certain steps you can take if you want to continue wearing your contact lenses despite having a mild allergic flare-up. — dpa If you're a hay fever sufferer and your eyes are exposed to pollen, they can become itchy, red and watery. What happens if you're also a contact lens wearer? The lenses may no longer fit properly because your eyes' tear film – the aqueous solution they float on – becomes compromised by substances the tear glands secrete in an allergic reaction, explains the KGS, a German group that raises awareness about good vision. This poorer fit then results in poorer vision. As a general rule, if pollen produces a strong allergic response in your eyes, it's best to switch to glasses during hay fever season to avoid irritating them further with contact lenses. In cases with mild symptoms, you can continue to wear them, but you should bear some things in mind. First of all, not all contacts are equal. Hard lenses (also known as rigid gas permeable, or RGP, lenses) don't accumulate deposits – including pollen – as easily as soft lenses do, which is an advantage. If you prefer soft ones though, it's best to wear daily disposable lenses. Then you start each day with pollen-free contacts. Should you choose monthly or yearly lenses, it's important to clean them thoroughly. Peroxide systems are especially effective, and unlike all-in-one solutions, typically don't contain preservatives that some people with allergies may not tolerate. ALSO READ: What happens if you rinse contact lenses with tap water? Anti-allergy eye drops can bring relief. In order to work properly, they shouldn't be used while you're wearing your contacts though, because they could collect in and around the lenses, the KGS says. Consequently, your eyes don't get – or are delayed in getting – the proper dose of the active ingredient. To be on the safe side, you should wait at least 15 minutes after administering anti-allergy eye drops – 20 to 30 minutes is better – before putting in your contact lenses. As for eye drops that are merely moisturising, you can normally administer them while your contacts are in. If you're out and about with your contacts in and airborne pollen is making your eyes itch, don't rub them no matter how strong the urge is, the KGS says. This is because rubbing will only irritate them more. Instead, you should use moisturising eye drops or take out your contacts for a while. To be prepared for such moments, contact lens wearers with hay fever should not only always have moisturising eye drops with them, but also a pair of up-to-date prescription glasses and a contact lens case pre-filled with cleaning solution. – dpa
