David Coote charged by FA over Jurgen Klopp slur in leaked video

The former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged by the FA for comments made about Jürgen Klopp in a video but he will not face action for alleged gambling misconduct. Coote was sacked by the PGMOL in December after a series of clips was leaked to The Sun showing him abusing the former Liverpool manager by calling him a 'German c***' and taking cocaine. The reference to Klopp's nationality makes it an 'aggravated' breach of the FA's rules and could potentially lead to a more severe sanction. Another video showed Coote discussing booking a Leeds United player before a match, but he later insisted that he was not involved with spot-fixing and no charges have been brought on that issue after an FA investigation.

David Coote charged by FA over foul-mouthed Jürgen Klopp comments

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged by the Football Association in regards to comments he made about Jürgen Klopp. Coote was suspended from his role by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) in November after a video leaked online showing him making foul-mouthed comments about Klopp. The 42-year-old was sacked the following month after a second video, published by the Sun, allegedly showed him sniffing what appeared to be white powder. 'David Coote has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to comments that he made about Jürgen Klopp in a video recorded around July 2020 which appeared on social media in November 2024. It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1,' read a FA statement. 'It's further alleged that this constitutes an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality. Coote has, however, been cleared of any gambling misconduct following claims he discussed issuing a yellow card to a player before the match in question. Coote denied the allegations, describing them as 'false and defamatory'. Coote was banned by Uefa in February from officiating in European competition until 30 June 2026. The previous month he said struggles with his sexuality contributed to the 'really poor choices' that cost him his job.

Former Premier League ref Coote charged by FA for offensive comments about Klopp

LONDON (AP) — Former Premier League referee David Coote was charged by the Football Association on Tuesday for making offensive comments to friends about ex-Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp in a private video that ended up being widely circulated on social media, leading to the match official getting fired. Coote is alleged to have 'acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words,' the FA said about a video recorded around July 2020. Advertisement The governing body said it's alleged that the official's actions constitute an 'aggravated breach' of rules because they 'included a reference — whether express or implied — to nationality.' Two videos, apparently filmed using a phone, circulated on social media appearing to show Coote giving his personal opinion on Liverpool and Klopp, its long-time former manager, when asked by an unidentified man. Coote uses an expletive for Liverpool and a derogatory term for Klopp, saying he disliked the German manager because he was 'arrogant' and 'accused me of lying' after one game. Coote was initially suspended for his conduct and then fired in December because his position was deemed 'untenable' by English soccer's referees body following an investigation into his conduct. Advertisement Coote was also investigated by the FA following allegations in British newspaper The Sun that he discussed with a fan the possibility of giving a yellow card to a player in a match. Coote denied any wrongdoing and the FA said Tuesday no charges were issued in relation to that investigation. Separately, UEFA launched an investigation into Coote following a video, again published by The Sun, allegedly showing him using cocaine during the European Championship this year. ___ AP soccer:
