Jets Rookie Gets Rave Review From Rival Coach
Jets Rookie Gets Rave Review From Rival Coach originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets needed a boost at the tight end position, and that led the franchise to draft LSU stud Mason Taylor in the second round. Advertisement Coming to a tight end room with Jeremy Ruckert and Stone Smartt, Taylor has every chance to be the Week 1 starter if he can prove he is up to the task. More known for his blocking than pass-catching ability, Taylor has all the tools that Aaron Glenn is looking for, and with the Jets wanting to be a run-first football team, there is a place on the field waiting for he's good enough. For ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, he spoke to an anonymous NFC offensive coach, who had a glowing endorsement for Taylor. "Jets selecting TE Mason Taylor at No. 42: 'He's (expletive) awesome," the offensive coach said. "He was my No. 2 tight end (behind Chicago's Colston Loveland). He's athletic, he's young (21), and he's got upside in the passing game." © SCOTT CLAUSE/USA TODAY Network / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images So, hopes are high for what Taylor can do in his rookie season. Advertisement Mason has already been seen catching touchdown passes from Justin Fields at OTAs and minicamp, so it appears he is settling in quite well to Tanner Engstrand's offense. Yes, it's against the air, but Mason is showing the potential to not only be a good blocker for the offense but to be a genuine passing option for Fields. With only Garrett Wilson seen as a genuine threat, having Taylor working the underneath routes to help keep the chains moving could be the ace up Engstrand's sleeve. Once training camp begins, we will be able to truly evaluate Taylor as a member of this offense, but one NFC coach already seems sold. QB Tiers - Where Is Jets' Justin Fields?
QB Tiers - Where Is Jets' Justin Fields? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Quarterback rankings, for the most part, are subjective, but when looking at New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields, he can be tough to get a proper read on. Advertisement Four years in the NFL, and now on his third different team, and nothing more than glimpses of his talent, have surrounded the former first-rounder. Now with the Jets, in what is looking like his last chance to prove he is a viable starter in the league, Justin has a clear runway to give 2025 his best shot yet. For CBS Sports in putting all quarterbacks into tiers, Fields, to no one's surprise, lands in Tier 6 - Holdovers and Placeholders. "Fields can pass the eye test with flying colors; he looks the part with his athleticism, which once helped him clear 1,100 rushing yards (!) as the Bears' starter," CBS Sports writes. "Still, he's now on his third team in five seasons, and neither of his previous clubs could figure out how to prioritize ball protection while maximizing his gifts." Justin Fields And The JetsBy Tony Fisher The Jets played it well with Fields. A two-year, $40 million deal that has escapability after 2025 if things go south. If Justin plays well, they have their starting quarterback for 2026 under contract for just $20 million. Advertisement Tick and tick. But if we are being serious, the Jets would like to see Fields take the step many have been waiting for since he was drafted. The physical gifts are clear to see, but can Fields "play" quarterback to a high-enough level when he can be the driver for Tanner Engstrand's offense? Yes, Fields is a placeholder right now, but if things go his way in 2025, he won't be a placeholder any longer - he'll be the bona fide starter. Jets Urged To Dip Into Free Agent Market For Receivers
Jets Urged To Dip Into Free Agent Market For Receivers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One of the biggest knocks on the New York Jets' offense is the lack of quality weapons for Justin Fields. Garrett Wilson is the only player with "credentials" as a star, with Josh Reynolds, Allen Lazard, Malachi Corley, and Arian Smith forming the group underneath him. Advertisement With over $36 million in cap space, the Jets do have the funds to do a little free agent shopping if they so choose, but we know that head coach Aaron Glenn is taking a more youthful approach to building his roster. However, Bleacher Report believes the franchise needs to dip into the free agent market and provide Fields with some help. "It wouldn't hurt to add another proven pass-catcher to Fields' support group, either," Bleacher Report writes. "Wilson is a No. 1-caliber receiver, while Josh Reynolds and rookie tight end Mason Taylor were both sensible additions. The Jets have a lack of reliable depth at wideout, though. They should consider signing seasoned free agents like Keenan Allen or Tyler Boyd." Advertisement ESPN's Rich Cimini thinks that Reynolds is the clear No. 2 receiver behind Wilson as we head to training camp, so Lazard could be one to keep an eye on as the trade deadline comes into view later in the year. However, the Jets seem content with their options at receiver, and yes, they might be keeping their powder dry for next offseason. Nevertheless, adding a proven veteran on a one-year, low-cost deal might not be the worst idea. Related: Jets Fans React to 'Thiccer Kicker' Related: Can Jets' 'Biggest Question' Be Answered In 2025? Can Jets' 'Biggest Question' Be Answered In 2025?
Can Jets' 'Biggest Question' Be Answered In 2025? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets this offseason have been moving in silence under head coach Aaron Glenn, with the franchise adding some nice pieces on both sides of the ball to usher in this new era. Advertisement One such player is Justin Fields. The fifth-year quarterback comes to the Big Apple looking to reignite his career in what is perhaps his last chance at being an NFL starter, or at least showing he deserves to be. Nick Shook has liked the Jets' offseason, but Fields looms as the biggest question mark. "I've loved the Jets' approach since they hired Aaron Glenn as their new coach in January," Shook wrote. "The big question mark is Justin Fields , a quarterback who needs to prove himself now that he's with his third NFL team in as many years. Then again, this feels like his best opportunity to do so, compared to previous situations in Chicago and Pittsburgh." Justin Fields and the Tony Fisher With a stout offensive line, a trio of running backs led by Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson as his go-to weapon, Fields does have plenty to work with. Advertisement He's got a clear runway in 2025 without the fear of Tyrod Taylor usurping him in training camp — Fields is the starter. That in itself might create a sense of calm for a player who knows time is running out to prove his worth as a starter. And he will get that chance under offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, who will try to implement the same type of run game he had in Detroit with the Jets. If he can, Fields will have a good run game to fall back on, while being able to play within his means and hopefully lead the Jets to a better record than last season. But the biggest question is, can he? Jets' Aaron Glenn/Justin Fields Tandem Labeled 'Ideal Match'
Jets' Aaron Glenn/Justin Fields Tandem Labeled 'Ideal Match' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets' hiring of Aaron Glenn signaled the franchise wanted to get a little tougher, and bringing in a no-nonsense coach, who will instill a standard from Day 1, was the way to go. Advertisement But you have to pair that with a quarterback who feeds off of that, and then helps bring his vision to life, and that player was Justin Fields. Yes, there are concerns over what Fields can be over the span of an entire league season, given he's shown nothing more than glimpses in four years, but there is upside, and that is what excites some. And for ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the duo of Glenn and Fields might just be what the doctor ordered for the AFC East franchise. "Several head coaching hires were lauded in league circles -- most notably Ben Johnson to the Bears and Mike Vrabel to the Patriots -- but the selection of Glenn in New York resonates, too," Fowler writes. "And Fields is considered by some as an ideal match for Glenn's efforts to instill toughness in Florham Park." The Jets And Justin FieldsBy Tony Fisher It is no secret that the Jets under Glenn will be a tough, physical football team, and with Tanner Engstrand as the offensive coordinator, he will look to bring some elements of the Detroit Lions' offense to the Big Apple (Tanner was passing game coordinator from 2023-2024). Advertisement Fields with a stout run game, an improved offensive line, and a defense that, with Glenn's tutelage, should be better than what was put on tape last year, New York might be a little tougher to slay than some think. Now, we aren't suggesting a Washington Commanders-like turnaround, but maybe the Jets won't be the easy beats in 2025. With the "ideal match" of Glenn and Fields helping usher in a new physical era of Jets football.
