Satono Reve in need of Magic in QEII Jubilee
ASCOT Horses from Ireland and France have flown miles to Royal Ascot to contest the £1 million (S$1.73 million) Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (1,200m), but Satono Reve has travelled over 13,000km from Japan. No horse has made the journey and won in 10 tries to conquer Britain's most iconic race meeting, but no Japanese contender has been as good as Satono Reve. The Lord Kanaloa six-year-old is a Group 1 winner in Japan, but is probably better known for finishing second to Ka Ying Rising in the HK$22 million Group 1 Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m) at Sha Tin on April 27 - which is no better endorsement given that Ka Ying Rising is the best sprinter in the world. Satono Reve arrived in Newmarket on May 2 to be given plenty of time to prepare and has been stabled at James Horton's yard. "After arriving from Hong Kong, Satono Reve had some time to recover before steadily building up his training," said his trainer Noriyuki Hori. "He had his final gallop on June 11, a five-furlong (1,000m) piece of work on the July Course at Newmarket, ridden by Ryan Moore. "Although it's a different environment from what he's used to, he's been coming along well thanks to the warm support of James Horton, his team and everyone involved." Satono Reve will be ridden by Joao Moreira. The Brazilian jockey known as the "Magic Man" was in the saddle when Satono Reve won the Group 1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen (1,200m) at Chukyo in Japan on March 30. "He's such a good horse," said the globetrotting jockey. "I'm excited about riding him at Ascot. He just needs to bring that type of form here to be competitive." The French-trained Lazzat leads the opposition, with trainer Jerome Reynier confident of a good performance. "He has such a high cruising speed," said the French trainer. "His last run was his first over as short as 1,200 (metres), but he can take a good grip and stay on well. I think he is the perfect match for the race." Last year, Inisherin was the easy winner of a Group 1 sprint at Royal Ascot on fast ground, the Commonwealth Cup (1,200m). The Shamardal four-year-old was subsequently rather disappointing but returned to win the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes (1,200m) on May 14. Trainer Kevin Ryan could not conceal his delight at York. "That's a relief. I was nervous but it went well," he said. "He'll improve for that run. I'm delighted because he's such a lovable, sensible horse." The formidable duo of trainer Aidan O'Brien and jockey Ryan Moore, who have already claimed five races after three days at Royal Ascot, command respect with their representative Storm Boy. The only three-year-old in the race, the Justify colt moved from Australia to Ireland this year. Last year he won sprints up to Group 2 level for leading Sydney trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, but finished last when favourite on his UK debut last month in Ireland. The Coolmore ward will surely do better, as O'Brien would not run him if he was not confident of a better performance. The race in which Storm Boy was last was won by the Clive Cox-trained James's Delight, who is a live outsider in Saturday's contest. HKJC

Veteran Bloodstock Agent Michael Wallace Dies
Veteran Bloodstock Agent Michael Wallace Dies originally appeared on Paulick Report. Michael Wallace, a bloodstock agent who was part of the group that secured Triple Crown winner Justify at auction, died on the evening of June 7. His death was confirmed Sunday on the social media accounts of Ardsley Stud in New Zealand, owned by his parents, Jim and Mary Wallace. A New Zealand native, Wallace grew up on Ardsley Stud, which was purchased by his grandfather in 1971. He was a graduate of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Sunline Scholarship, an immersive Thoroughbred industry training program, and he served his externship at Rich Hill Farm in his home country. Wallace is best known for his eight-year run as chief operating officer of China Horse Club, where he played a major part in the group's acquisitions during its early years. Advertisement Chief among those acquisitions was the purchase of a $500,000 Scat Daddy colt in partnership with Maverick Racing, the nom-de-sales ticket of WinStar Farm CEO Elliott Walden, at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Later named Justify, the colt would go on to sweep the 2018 Triple Crown and sell to the Coolmore partnership on a stud deal worth a reported $75 million. Justify highlighted the more than Grade or Group 1 victories and five Eclipse Awards earned by China Horse Club during his time with the company. After leaving China Horse Club in 2021, Wallace became an independent bloodstock agent for clients around the globe, including Vincent and Teresa Viola's St. Elias Stable, where he was on the team that landed Grade 1 winner Mindframe. He also worked for Kuldeep Singh Rajput's Gandharvi Racing Stables, where his domestic successes Grade 3 winner Hall of Fame, owned in tandem with the Coolmore partnership. Wallace is survived by his wife Kristi and five children. This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on Jun 9, 2025, where it first appeared.

When was the last time there was a Triple Crown winner?
Winning the Triple Crown is one of the hardest achievements in all of American sports. It's earned by racehorses who win the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes all in the same year. Only 13 horses have accomplished such a feat in 150 years of racing. There won't be a 14th name added to that list this year, as Sovereignty won the Kentucky Derby and Journalism took home the Preakness. That means Justify will continue his seven-year run as the most recent Triple Crown winner. Jockeyed by Mike Smith and trained by Bob Baffert, Justify beat Gronkowski to win the 150th running of the Belmont Stakes and the Triple Crown in 2018. Justify began his racing career on Feb. 18, a scant 77 days before the Derby. He won his first three races by a combined 19 lengths, making Baffert a believer. The big chestnut colt with the appetite to match burst onto the national scene with a 2½-length victory on a sloppy track in the Derby. Two weeks later, he survived a challenge in the fog-shrouded Preakness, winning by a half-length, again in the slop to set up a Triple Crown try. On a cloudy 80-degree day at Belmont Park, Justify proved a cool customer. He didn't flinch when greeted by 90,327 roaring fans as he walked onto the track. He stood so quietly in the starting gate that Smith wondered if he'd respond when it sprang open. Did he ever? Justify led all the way in achieving one of the sports world's toughest feats 45 years to the day that Secretariat won the Belmont by a record 31 lengths. Baffert called Justify one of the all-time greats. For the 2025 Belmont Stakes, Baffert trained a horse named Rodriguez. Rodriguez is 6-to-1 odds to win the race. Journalism, winner of the Preakness, is an 8-5 favorite, while Sovereignty, winner of the Derby, has 2-1 odds to win. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
