Fire officials urges proper disposal of lithium-ion batteries after recycling truck fire in Sunderland
SUNDERLAND, Mass. (WWLP) – Massachusetts fire officials are reminding residents of ways to properly dispose of lithium-ion batteries after a recycling truck fire in Sunderland. Last month, crews were called to a recycling truck fire on River Road in Sunderland. The Department of Fire Services said that the truck was collecting curbside recycling when the driver noticed the fire in the back of the truck. The driver called 911 and found a safe area to dump the burning contents, which is per their protocol. Jupiter Power lithium battery project in Westfield canceled over eco concerns The Sunderland Fire Department, with the help of the Sunderland Highway Department, was able to put the fire out and spread the recycling apart to be sure it was completely out. The cause, determined by the Department of Fire Services, was from lithium-ion batteries that were placed in a household's recycling bin. When it was collected by the truck, it was compacted, causing an uncontrolled increase in temperature inside the battery known as thermal runaway, resulting in a fire that spread quickly. Lithium-ion batteries can be found in many household items such as cell phones, laptops and tablets, watches, e-bikes, vape devices, electric vehicles, power tools, and many children's toys. Sunderland Chief Benjamin and State Fire Marshal Davine are reminding residents that these batteries should not be placed in the trash or household recycling. To properly dispose of lithium-ion batteries, they can be brought to a household hazardous waste collection site or a battery recycling center such as Staples, Home Depot, and Lowe's. Jupiter Power lithium battery project in Westfield canceled over eco concerns
WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A developer for the proposed lithium battery energy storage facility in Westfield has decided to pull back on the project. This update was announced during a news conference held by the city's mayor outside City Hall. This decision is bringing relief to the community as many were concerned about the potential environmental and health impacts this facility could've brought. The Texas-based company Jupiter Power was looking to construct a lithium battery energy storage facility over the Barnes aquifer. This is the sole source of water for Westfield and the surrounding neighborhoods. There was also concern about long-burning lithium fires at the site, releasing harmful chemicals into the air. And in the last few months, the mayor and other state lawmakers were activeLy working with Jupiter Power for them to reconsider their proposal. Mayor Michael McCabe expressed gratitude for the developer's willingness to withdraw and listen to the community's concerns and reassess their plans. 'The protection of our city's natural resources should be paramount in all of our decision-making processes. And to that end, we are very pleased with this development,' says McCabe. While the company believed the facility would bring economic and resiliency benefits, they decided to focus their efforts on other projects. In a statement to 22News, Jupiter Power explained they've got a wide range of projects in development and must carefully decide which ones to invest in and move forward with. It is still unclear as to what's next for the property. Jupiter Power withdraws lithium battery storage proposal over Barnes aquifer
WESTFIELD — At an April 25 noon press conference, Mayor Michael McCabe, joined by state Sen. John Velis and Community Development Director Peter Miller announced what he said would be good news for the residents of Westfield and surrounding communities. 'After months of communication and consideration, I am very pleased to announce that Jupiter Power has withdrawn their proposal for a battery energy storage site in the city of Westfield,' McCabe said. The Streamfield Battery Energy Storage Site proposed by Jupiter Power overlapped the Barnes Aquifer, which has a recent and costly history of PFAS contamination. The project caused an outpouring from residents in Westfield and neighboring communities, who voiced their opposition to the plan at meetings and in other public forums. The mayor said he had received a brief statement from the company that morning that also followed a recent meeting he had with Miller, Velis and Jack Godshall, chief financial officer of Jupiter Power, that he shared at the press conference. 'Jupiter Power has a broad portfolio of projects in active development across the United States, and is consistently evaluating which projects to continue to invest in and advance. While we know that the Streamfield project would bring many economic and grid resiliency benefits to the region, and are of course disappointed with the outcome, Jupiter Power has now made the business decision to terminate the Streamfield project and focus development efforts elsewhere,' the statement from Godshall read. McCabe said he had been impressed in that final meeting with the company at how much they had listened to Westfield. 'City Council President John Beltrandi, state Sen. John Velis, [state] House Rep. Kelly Pease and I have been meeting and speaking with the company over the past few months. I am happy to report that the meetings were congenial and achieved the transparency necessary for Jupiter to come to this conclusion,' McCabe said. Velis said before the last meeting with Jupiter Power, he had expected 'a full-on brawl. I give them credit. They listened in a collaborative manner and were cognizant of Westfield's history.' Velis said he was also impressed by the number of emails and phone calls his office received on this matter, and the people who came together in opposition. 'I would like to thank our City Council, especially Councilors Dan Allie and Kristen Mello for getting the word out to our constituents and to those residents who answered the call and wrote letters, attended meetings and otherwise voiced their concerns to the [Department of Public Utilities] Siting Board. There is no doubt that vocal public discourse contributed to Jupiter Power's decision to withdraw,' McCabe said. 'In my 40 years in public service, I never saw an issue like this that was unanimously panned. Nobody was in favor, they were 100 percent opposed,' McCabe said. 'The protection of our City's natural resources should be paramount in all our decision-making processes and to that end we are very pleased with this development,' he added.
