Telangana Tourism Min Jupally dismisses BRS' claims, says only Rs 30 crore spent on Miss World

HYDERABAD: Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao on Tuesday criticised BRS leaders for claiming that the government had spent Rs 200 crore on Miss World 2025. Speaking to reporters, along with Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar at the Secretariat, he said: 'BRS leaders are spreading misinformation. The total expenditure for the event was Rs 30 crore, of which Rs 21 crore was borne by sponsors. The government spent only Rs 9 crore.' Asking BRS leaders KT Rama Rao and T Harish Rao to substantiate their claims, the minister dared them to an open debate on the issue. 'If they fail to prove their allegations, they should rub their noses on the ground,' he said and alleged that Rs 115 crore was spent for tourism promotion during the BRS regime. 'Opposition parties are spreading false information through social media that the government has given 300 grams (30 tolas) of gold to each Miss World contestant. We did not give even three grams of gold. They are also spreading false propaganda that the government had spent Rs 1 lakh per meal at the dinner hosted in Chowmahalla Palace. The truth is that the government spent only Rs 8,200 per plate,' he said. He asserted that with lower expenditure, the government has successfully promoted Telangana tourism, traditions and culture throughout the world. Meanwhile, the minister described the allegations made by Miss England Milla Magee as false. 'If anybody misbehaved with her, the other contestants would not have stayed here until the finals of the Miss World contest,' he said.

Govt showcased TG culture sans splurging on MW pageant: Min

Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao on Tuesday said that the state government showcased the Telangana culture and traditions to the world without spending huge amounts of money. The Minister said that out of the Rs 31 crore spent by the government, Rs 21 crore came back from sponsors and the remaining Rs 10 crore was also committed by the sponsors and said if this money was received, the government will be spending next to nothing. He said that the government attracted the entire world by hosting the beauty pageant without spending a single rupee. The Minister alleged that the BRS leaders lied that the government spent Rs 200 crore. He also took exception to the criticism that contestants' feet were washed by local women. He clarified that while 32 out of 33 contestants washed their own feet, one of them was doing nothing, hence a local tribal woman helped the contestant in washing the feet. Referring to an old incident, Jupally questioned whether the IAS officer Venkatram Reddy was asked to wash the feet of former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao. He challenged Harish Rao for an open debate at Telangana Bhavan or Abids and prove that the government spent Rs 200 crore on beauty pageant. He also clarified that the dinner in Chowmahalla Palace was Rs 8,250 per plate. The Minister said that the expenditure was Rs 31 crore including Rs 5 crore for license fee, Rs 25 crore for organising expenses. The funds provided by the sponsors include – Rs 5 crore by MEIL, Rs 5 crore by Auro Reality, Rs 3 crore each by MSN and Honer Homes, Rs 2 crore by Cybercity, Rs 3 crore by Salarpuria, amounting to Rs 21 crore. Stating that all steps were taken by the government was to promote Telangana tourism, Jupally said that the previous government spent Rs 115 crore on tourism promotion during its 10-year tenure. 'The BRS government spent Rs 27.84 crore alone in 2016-17. How many jobs were provided and how much employment was generated with this much spending,' he asked. Referring to the allegations that CM Revanth Reddy did not visit the fire accident spot at Gulzar Houz, Krishna Rao said that the CM sent three ministers to the spot immediately. He also asked why KCR did not go to Kondagattu when 70 persons died in the accident. The Minister said that the government did not form any inquiry committee on Miss England Milla Magee's allegations.

Each food plate at Chowmahalla Palace costs ₹8,200 not ₹1 lakh: Tourism Minister addresses allegations on Miss World contest

Only ₹30 crore was spent for the Miss World 2025 beauty pageant, with Telangana government's spending only ₹9 crore and the balance ₹21 crore was paid by sponsors, said Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao challenging the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders K.T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao to prove the allegation that ₹200 crore was spent for the contest. At a press conference held at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat in Hyderabad on Tuesday (June 3, 2025), the Minister condemned the allegations by Miss England 2024 Milla Magee that she was subjected to inappropriate behaviour. Mr. Rao said that 'there is no truth in her allegations'. If the contestants were indeed made to feel uncomfortable, as alleged by Ms. Milla Magee, the other contestants would not stayed till the end, he said. He refuted another allegation that the contestants were given 30 tolas of gold. The contestants were taken to Chowmahalla Palace on May 13 where they had dinner. The Tourism Minister said that each plate of food there costs ₹8,200 but not ₹1 lakh.
