Human remains found in Palm Springs backyard; police investigating

PALM SPRINGS — A death investigation is underway after human remains were discovered Thursday afternoon in the backyard of a home in Palm Springs. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office has assumed controlled of the the investigation after receiving a request for assistance from the Palm Springs Police Department. According to a sheriff's statement, village police officers responded shortly before 3 p.m. June 19 after a resident reported finding remains in the 3900 block of Lakewood Road. More: The murders of the Chillingworths: Palm Beach County crime of the century The investigation continued Friday, June 20, as detectives from the sheriff's office's Violent Crimes Division, a K-9 cadaver team, and representatives from Florida Gulf Coast University responded to the scene. The teams located the remains and the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's Office responded to recover them. Detectives are working to determine how long the remains have been there, and whether the person who died was a victim of foul play, a sheriff's spokesperson said. Crews from The National Weather Service went to The Acreage on May 13, assessing whether a tornado touched down in the rural community in Palm Beach County's western suburbs the night before. Residents on a community forum reported property damage from a possible tornado in the area of Hall and Orange boulevards, just north of the city of Westlake. A tornado spawned by Hurricane Milton damaged neighborhoods in Wellington, The Acreage, Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter Farms in October. That storm damaged homes, cars and trees and forced the demolition of a Publix supermarket under construction in the Palm Beach Gardens community of Avenir. 'So strong and so fast': 140-mph tornado upends Avenir as Hurricane Milton neared Florida In The Acreage, the tornado downed trees near Golden Grove Elementary School on 140th Avenue North and punched a hole in the roof of Horizons Baptist Church at Orange Boulevard and 130th Trail North. A spokesperson for the weather service that more details regarding storms on May 12 will be released after the team finishes its assessment.
