Danny Boyle 'couldn't make Slumdog Millionaire today'
Danny Boyle "wouldn't be able to make" Slumdog Millionaire today. The 68-year-old filmmaker helmed the 2008 drama movie - which told the story of 18-year-old Jamal Malik from the Juhu slums of Mumbai - but Danny believes the acclaimed film was of its time and that the world has now moved on. He told the Guardian newspaper: "Yeah, we wouldn't be able to make that now. And that's how it should be. It's time to reflect on all that. We have to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the mark that we've left on the world." The film - which starred Dev Patel and Freida Pinto - won a number of awards at the time, including seven BAFTA Awards and four Golden Globes. However, it received mixed reviews in India. Asked if the movie amounted to a form of colonialism, Danny replied: "No, no. Well, only in the sense that everything is. "At the time it felt radical. We made the decision that only a handful of us would go to Mumbai. We'd work with a big Indian crew and try to make a film within the culture. But you're still an outsider. It's still a flawed method. "That kind of cultural appropriation might be sanctioned at certain times. But at other times it cannot be." Danny remains proud of Slumdog Millionaire, but he feels that such films should be made by "a young Indian film-maker" instead. He said: "I'm proud of the film, but you wouldn't even contemplate doing something like that today. It wouldn't even get financed. Even if I was involved, I'd be looking for a young Indian film-maker to shoot it." Danny enjoyed his big career breakthrough with Trainspotting in 1996. The director helmed the hit drama film - which starred the likes of Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle - but Danny never imagined that the movie would become such a huge success. He recently told The Hollywood Reporter: "I remember there was a wave of disapproval of it building. They had shown a trailer or something on one of the TV movie shows here. And one of the prestigious critics said, 'Well, that looks shockingly irresponsible about drugs.' Things like that were building. "And then there was this journalist, Muriel Gray, and she wrote this piece about Irvine's [Welsh] book, and about the film. She spoke with authority saying, 'You do not know what you are talking about,' all these people piling disapproval on top of it. It was a tipping point." Danny relished the experience of working with Ewan on Trainspotting, remembering that the actor was "fanatical" about his role. The director said: "His agents were putting him in period romances, for which it was perfect. And he shaved it off before we'd offered him the part of Renton in Trainspotting. He shaved it off and lost weight. And then he continued to lose weight. He was fanatical about that. And he was right."

Archana Puran Singh's son gets upset as fan ignores him but recognises their cook: ‘They walked past me'
After sampling Mumbai's best dosas, vadapaos, pizzas, and other food items, Archana Puran Singh and Parmeet Sethi ventured out once again, this time to find the city's best idli destination. They were accompanied, as usual, by their two sons, Aaryamann and Ayushmaan, as well as a special guest. Joining them on the episode was their cook, Bhagyashree, who was celebrating her birthday. Bhagyashree often makes appearances in Archana's vlogs, and was once roped into performing a scripted exchange with Farah Khan's cook Dilip. The group's first destination was the Juhu hotspot Dakshinayan, where they enjoyed two types of idlis. They were approached by several fans as they left, and took out the time to click pictures with them. But Aaryamann was disappointed at being ignored. 'I got a little irritated at the end. People were coming over to take pictures with you guys, and they also asked Ayushmaan if he'd take a picture with them. I thought they would come to me next, but they just walked past me.' Also read – Archana Puran Singh and Parmeet Sethi's son says they fake being in love for the camera, Parmeet replies, 'If we weren't in love, you wouldn't be here' He continued, 'One guy even gave me a look, but then he turned away. I also inched closer to him, hoping he'd ask for a picture with me, but he didn't.' Bhagyashree joined in as everyone laughed at Aaryamann. 'Forget that, one guy was driving past, and he said, 'Didi, didi, main aapki video dekhta hoon'.' Archana and Parmeet couldn't contain their laughter. 'Aaryamann, they recognised Bhagyashree and not you! Haaye mera bachcha,' Archana said. 'But this guy obviously knew I was there, it's not like he didn't recognise me, I was with the rest of you,' Aaryamann said. They next went to a restaurant called Arya Bhavan. Outside, someone asked Aaryamann if they'd come to the right place, but he thought that they were calling out his name. 'Finally, I thought someone is calling me to take a picture, but they were just asking if they'd come to the right Arya Bhavan,' he said, even more disappointed. 'Yes, I saw that too,' Bhagyashree said with a laugh.

Four-year-old Dhanvi from Kozhikode helps discover subterranean eel loach
KOZHIKODE: In a remarkable blend of childhood curiosity and scientific curiosity, a four-year-old girl has become the unlikely face behind the discovery of a new subterranean fish species from Kerala. Dhanvi Dheera, fondly called Juhu, first noticed the unusual fish while playing with water collected from a well in their house during a visit to Naduvannur in Kozhikode district. Her observation prompted her mother Aswani Lalu to investigate further, which eventually led to a groundbreaking scientific revelation. Aswani, who used to draw water from a dugout perennial well owned by Malol Karthiayani Amma, noticed the tiny eel-like fish and informed local experts. The well, situated at an elevation of 150 m above sea level, receives continuous underground water flow from the hilly terrains of Vallora Mala and drains through a natural subterranean channel, making it an ideal habitat for rare aquatic life. Responding to the find, a scientific team led by Dr K R Sreenath, Director General of the Fisheries Survey of India, and Dr B Pradeep of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kozhikode, collected specimens. Detailed morpho-meristic and genetic analysis confirmed that the fish represented an entirely new species. The eel loach was officially named Pangio Juhuae, in honour of little Juhu who first spotted it. Their research was published in the Indian Journal of Fisheries, under the title 'Discovery of a new species of troglobitic eel loach from Southern India'. The study was co-authored by scientists Dr K R Aju, Dr Sandhya Sukumaran, Dr Wilson Sebastian, Dr Alvin Anto and Dr Grinson George. This marks the third discovery of a subterranean eel loach species in Kerala in recent years. Pangio Bhujia was first identified in 2019 from Cherinjal in Kozhikode, followed by Pangio Pathala from Tiruvalla in Pathanamthitta district in 2022. However, Pangio Juhuae stands apart with its distinct dorsal fin and more pronounced eyes, suggesting it has retained more surface-dwelling traits than its cousins.
