Judo: Kim strikes gold for Korea, Tasoev defends heavyweight crown on Day 7 in Budapest
Day 7 closes out the individual competition at the OTP Bank World Judo Championships and it's time for the heavyweights to take centre stage in Budapest. Before the finals, IJF President Mr. Marius Vizer awarded diplomas recognising achievements in judo. And the traditional flag-passing ceremony was held to commemorate the closing of the event, as Hungary passed the IJF flag to Azerbaijan — with Baku set to host the World Championships in 2026 where judo would return to the land of fire. At +78kg, Hayun KIM had been making her mark on the international stage, and in Budapest she delivered her best performance yet. Could she take the title? Facing her was Japan's Mao ARAI who had managed to secure her place in the final after a fantastic performance in the preliminaries. ARAI looked every bit a contender for the World final was a tight, tactical battle taken into Golden Score. It was Hayun KIM who would wear the red backpatch for the Republic of Korea's first gold medal! I'm so happy to win my first World Championship gold medal, especially after finishing fifth and third. OTP Bank Chairman & IJF Honorary President Dr Sandor CSANYI awarded the medals. At +100kg, Guram TUSHISHVILI was on fire — storming his way through the preliminaries with explosive throws and unstoppable momentum. The Georgian powerhouse looked focused and fearless. He was here to reclaim the title he first won in 2018. Facing him in the final was Inal TASOEV, the 2023 World Champion. TASOEV had delivered a solid performance and was aiming to add a second World title to his the final, TUSHISHVILI led with a yuko, but it was TASOEV who came back with a waza-ari and managed to keep the Georgian at bay, claiming his second World title! This is very cool, it's my second time in Budapest and both of them were successful, the first time I won a Grand Slam and the second time a World Championships. Only positive emotions. 5 time Olympic and 12 time World Champion, Mr Teddy RINER awarded the medals. Japan shines as Tanaka claims -70kg gold and Murao triumphs in all-Japanese -90kg final
It's Day 5 in Budapest at the OTP Bank World Judo Championships and the action rolls on. At -70kg, Lara CVJETKO is no stranger to World finals, but this time she was out for gold. The Croatian judoka returned to the big stage with more experience, greater composure, and a renewed hunger to stand on the top of the podium. CVJETKO looked like an athlete on a mission – ready to turn silver into gold. Her opponent was Shiho TANAKA – a world bronze medallist herself. She had confidently worked her way through the draw. Each contest saw her judo sharpen, her intent clearer. This was her chance to move up the podium and she stepped onto the tatami with gold firmly in her both athletes hungry for their first World title, the final was set for a high-level showdown. A golden score yuko from TANAKA was the decider. The Japanese judoka rose from the tatami as a World Champion. It's my third shot at the World Championships and I finally got the gold so I'm really happy and relieved. Hungary Minister of Foreign Affairs & Trade Mr Péter SZIJJÁRTÓ awarded the medals. At -90kg, Sanshiro MURAO was on fire, ippon in every contest on his way to the gold medal match. An amazing run through the preliminaries, with a dominant performance, had the judo world watching closely. Each match was a showcase of control, timing and explosive technique. MURAO looked unstoppable, was this finally his year to take the top of the podium and find his place among judo's elite?Facing him was his team-mate, reigning World Champion Goki TAJIMA who despite the pressure of defending his title, worked his way through the preliminaries. As the stakes rose, so did his judo with an outstanding semi-final ippon. He was finding his rhythm at the right moment, but was it enough to become a two time World Champion? In the final the two Japanese judoka took the contest to golden score. It was a tense, tactical fight. The victory was MURAO's, he would leave Budapest as World Champion. It was my dream to one day become World Champion since I started judo as a kid and I can't believe it's real right now. Abe claims fifth world title, Takeoka stuns at -66 kg, Gyertyas lights up Budapest crowd
It's day 2 in Budapest at the OTP Bank World Judo Championships. Dr. Tamas Sulyok, President of Hungary officially opened the event with IJF President, Mr Marius Vizer and Hungarian Judo Association President Dr Lazlo Toth in the presence of President of the Republic of Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko. ABE Uta powered her way into the final with precision and control from the first exchange. Her judo was sharp, her focus unshakable, and she looked every bit the champion in waiting. She sailed through the preliminaries, calm under pressure. In the final, she would face Kosovo's Distria KRASNIQI — a fierce competitor looking for a World title of her own. Krasniqi had been in excellent form throughout the day, battling through the preliminaries with a determination that makes her such a dangerous opponent. As the gold medal contest approached, both athletes looked sharp, setting the stage for a high-level clash between two world-class judoka. Ultimately, it was Abe who came out on top once again, claiming her fifth world title in style with ippon! The crowd roared with joy. It's just an unforgettable day to be fighting here in Budapest with so many of my fans from inside and out of Japan, it's really unforgettable. Her Imperial Highness Princess Tomohito of Mikasa awarded the the -66kg, Tajikistan's Nurali EMOMALI made it to the gold medal match after an impressive run through the preliminaries. After taking fifth place at last year's World Championships, one final contest stood between him and history. His opponent would be Japan's Takeshi TAKEOKA who delivered a brilliant performance, making his way to the final with confident, high-paced judo. Each contest showed his relentless pressure as he drove his way towards his goal, could he prove he belonged among the elite? In the final, as the two athletes went head-to-head in a tightly contested match, it was a single yuko that proved decisive — a small score in a high-stakes moment that ultimately determined the World Champion. The conditions were so good and the result was also good, so I'm very happy to be the World champion. President of the Republic of Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko awarded the medals. A highlight for the home nation was Roza GYERTYAS's impressive bronze medal! A moment that lit up the arena and brought the Budapest crowd to their feet. Join us again tomorrow for more!

Two unforgettable World Championship titles on a historic Day 1 in Budapest 2025
Welcome to Budapest, where new legends will rise at the OTP BANK World Judo Championships Hungary 2025. Before the competition started, the IJF held their Congress at the beautiful Varkert Bazar where IJF President, Mr Vizer stood for re-election unopposed and was applauded by the national federation presidents and general secretaries as his election was duly ratified. At the Papp László Arena, the crowds were waiting in anticipation to watch their favourite judoka claim their red back patches. In -48kg, Italy's Assunta SCUTTO claimed her place in the final with impressive judo all morning. Her second time in a World final, could she finally take the gold? Meeting her there was Kazakhstan's Abiba ABUZHAKYNOVA. The Kazakh was in fantastic form, with impressive footwork throughout the day, but would that be enough to earn her the title? Heading out for the gold medal match, it was anyone's game. Nearing the end of the contest, SCUTTO scored a yuko to lead the contest and soon after countered an attack, scoring ippon to claim the World title. Two bronzes, a silver, and finally a gold. An emotional victory to complete her collection. Taishan Group Chairman & Founder, IJF Hon Vice President Mr BIAN Zhiliang awarded the medals. I'm really happy, I don't believe it. My coach, my family, my gym, everybody, thank you, thank you!In the -60kg category, Romain VALADIER PICARD secured his first time in a World final here in Budapest. An impressive feat for the 22 year old. But facing him was the far more experienced Ryuju NAGAYAMA - could his sixth attempt for the World title finally be the one? In the gold medal match, Nagayama was dominant. Two waza-ari scores, finally taking him to the pinnacle of the -60kg. And earning him the red backpatch at long last. A performance built on precision, patience, and years of determination. This is my sixth World Championships and I finally have a gold medal and believe me it feels good. CHN NOC Vice President Mr ZHOU Jinqiang awarded the medals. It's been an incredible first day here in Budapest.

Netflix star of Fool Me Once to star in new BBC series
The Powys star of hit Netflix show Fool Me Once will be starring in a new BBC feel-good series which boasts a top tier cast. Laurie Kynaston, who hails from Llanfyllin, is currently filming in Dublin a six-part series based on the award-winning, bestselling novel Leonard and Hungry Paul. The story follows two unique board-gaming friends meandering through leafy suburban life, charting a story about Judo, ancient Rome, first loves, and the expansion of the Universe. Laurie, 31, stars alongside Derry Girls ' Jamie-Lee O'Donnell and The End of the F***ing World's Alex Lawther in the series which has been filmed throughout May in Ireland. "Having the time of me little life over in Dublin with this lot," Laurie shared in a post on social media which was liked by fellow Fool Me Once star Michelle Keegan. "Leonard and Hungry Paul are fantastic people and we couldn't be making this show with a better bunch." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Laurie Kynaston (@lauriekynaston) The former Llanfyllin High School pupil has been hailed as an emerging talent after winning an Evening Standard Theatre Award for his performance in The Son and also receiving a WhatsOnStage Award nomination. Most recently, he has starred in Harlen Coben's Fool Me Once mystery-drama Netflix mini-series alongside Dame Joanna Lumley and in the Disney+ drama about Anne Franks, A Small Light. In 2015, Laurie returned to Llanfyllin High School to take acting workshops with several drama students and visit his drama teacher Mandy Saunders who described her former student as 'always hardworking and disciplined' who paid 'meticulous attention to detail'. 'It is wonderful to see how his hard work has paid off and we are all so proud of his success- he deserves it!' she added. Llanfyllin High School also boasts an Oscar winner among its former pupils. Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain-raised cinematographer Lol Crawley won the prestigious award for his work in the epic period drama The Brutalist starring Adrien Brody. Speaking about Leonard and Hungry Paul, Eddie Doyle, Senior Head of Content Commissioning at BBC Northern Ireland, said : 'This series promises something special and is full of charm and poignant moments that encapsulate ordinary life. 'With a stellar cast bringing this acclaimed novel to the screen, it will make an exciting addition to BBC Northern Ireland's offering this year.'
