ESPN: Jets have a clear-cut favorite for WR2 heading into training camp

The New York Jets are hoping for a wide receiver to emerge opposite Garrett Wilson this season. Notable changes have occurred at the position over the past six months. Head coach Aaron Glenn will oversee a multi-man position battle throughout training camp. New general manager Darren Mougey signed veteran Josh Reynolds to a team-friendly one-year contract worth $2.7 million in free agency, per Over the Cap. Reynolds is the current favorite to start opposite Wilson, according to ESPN:. Reynolds appeared in nine total games in 2024 for the Denver Broncos and Jacksonville Jaguars. He totaled 13 receptions for 194 receiving yards and one touchdown. His brief stint in Denver saw him cross paths with Mougey, who was serving as the Broncos' assistant GM. Advertisement Reynolds also previously played three seasons (2021-23) for the Detroit Lions. Coach Glenn was the defensive coordinator for that entire period. That was arguably the most successful stretch of Reynolds' career. In 2023, he accumulated 40 catches for 608 yards and a career-high five touchdowns. Reynolds could face competition at camp from Allen Lazard, a holdover from the Aaron Rodgers era. Other competitors include fourth-round rookie Arian Smith and third-round sophomore Malachi Corley. Neither player can match Reynolds' veteran reliability. Reynolds should be considered the strong in-house favorite to start opposite Wilson. Jets Have 'Clear-Cut Favorite' For No. 2 WR Role Behind Garrett Wilson

Jets Have 'Clear-Cut Favorite' For No. 2 WR Role Behind Garrett Wilson originally appeared on Athlon Sports. We are at the time of the NFL offseason, where players trend up or down the depth chart, and for the New York Jets, the receiver position is a fascinating watch. Advertisement With Garrett Wilson the clear top dog, it is a little jumbled behind him with Allen Lazard, Josh Reynolds, Malachi Corley, Arian Smith and Tyler Johnson all vying for snaps. As OTAs have been completed and minicamp wrapped up last week, the Jets' receiver depth chart is beginning to take shape slowly. ESPN's Rich Cimini, in giving his takeaways from minicamp, came away with a clear vision of who the No. 2 receiver is. "Josh Reynolds is the clear-cut favorite for the WR2 job, ahead of Allen Lazard, whose name will continue to circulate in trade rumors now that Rodgers has landed with the Steelers," Cimini wrote. "If the Jets decide to move Lazard -- a big if -- it probably wouldn't be until the end of the preseason. But only if they're comfortable with their receiver depth." Detroit Lions wide receiver Josh Reynolds runs the ball during the first half against the L.A. Rams at Ford Field in Detroit on Jan. 14, 2024. Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK Reynolds has skin on the wall with Tanner Engstrand, whom he spent time with while in Detroit, so he knows the system and knows what his coordinator wants. Advertisement And it seems to be paying off early. Granted, receivers aren't going against anyone "properly" at OTAs and minicamp, with limited physical contact, so training camp will be an interesting watch to see if Reynolds can continue his ascent and claim the No. 2 receiver role behind Wilson. Yes, it's early, but it isn't a good look for Lazard to be overtaken already, and that might point to his Jets future being elsewhere, as Cimini stated. Which, going by how Reynolds has fared so far this offseason, might not be such a bad thing. Do the Jets have enough depth in their receiving corps?

Mandatory Credit: Ed Mulholland-Imagn Images The Jets have a hole on their roster at wide receiver. Garrett Wilson is leading the corps for the Jets as the top option, but behind him, there are a lot of question marks. The Jets have a few wide receivers on the roster who could boom The Jets have a couple of veteran options that will be getting a look this season, including Allen Lazard and Josh Reynolds. Out of those two, the most intriguing option is Josh Reynolds, who is only two seasons removed from his best campaign with the Lions. Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images The Jets' new head coach and offensive coordinator are coming over from the Lions. The connection between them and Reynolds is not a coincidence, but more of a praise. Advertisement Reynolds, in his 2023 campaign, posted 608 yards, five touchdowns, and averaged 15.2 yards per reception. Being on a team full of offensive stars, Reynolds still found a way to be a reliable option for Jared Goff, and this upcoming season could be exactly that for Justin Fields. Some younger players are also looking to get more opportunities, including Malachi Corley and Arian Smith. Arian Smith could be a big piece in this offense. When running a top offense, it's important to have a burner who can find his way open down the field. Smith, although he does have major drop problems, can be exactly that. Smith brings speed and versatility, which the Jets have not had in recent times. Can the Jets look towards a move through free agency? There are a couple of pieces out in free agency that may be a bit enticing, but one stands out as a fit. Advertisement Keenan Allen is a reliable veteran who would be a major upgrade on this Jets team. He is a smooth route runner who has sure hands. Credit: Bob Kupbens-Imagn Images With a lot of younger weapons at the pass-catching positions, Allen would bring veteran leadership for a team looking for a WR2. He brings experience, scheme versatility, and a good presence to a roster. Although I would like the Jets to make a move like this, I do not think they will make another move in free agency that would be as big as Allen. They feel comfortable with this receiving corps, and throughout OTAs and training camp, we will be able to get a look at the unit's ability to perform. Advertisement Related Headlines

Jets' Josh Reynolds Offers Positive Justin Fields Scouting Report

Jets' Josh Reynolds Offers Positive Justin Fields Scouting Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The winds of change have blown through 1 Jets drive this offseason as the Aaron Glenn era for the New York Jets gets underway. Advertisement With some fresh faces, including Justin Fields and former Detroit Lion Josh Reynolds, OTAs are of the utmost importance for developing chemistry, which will serve them well in the regular season. Part of Tanner Engstrand's offense, Reynolds has history with his coordinator after time in Detroit, and now he is back working as he looks to reestablish himself in the league - and he's doing it with a new quarterback in Fields. "He can throw it," Reynolds said with a smile. "He's got a beautiful ball. He's a smart quarterback, he's been picking up this offense pretty fast, and it's not easy. I'm excited to see how he continues to develop as the plays get a little easier, and it's going to be rolling." Former Steelers quarterback Justin Fields at Acrisure LeClaire-Imagn Images Things appear to be getting off to a nice start between Fields and Reynolds, which is crucial, given the current makeup of the receiver room. Advertisement It is Garrett Wilson and then the rest. Reynolds and Allen Lazard loom as the No. 2 and No. 3 weapons, although it is unknown who will land at which spot, with training camp offering the chance for either to stake their claim. As for Fields, this may be his last chance to prove to the NFL world that he can be a starting quarterback. He has a clear runway, a star receiver, a good running back tandem, and an offensive line that's one of the better units in football. And going by Reynold's words, he's off to a good start with his new team. Shooting Victim Josh Reynolds Reveals Motivation in Signing With New York Jets

Shooting Victim Josh Reynolds Reveals Motivation in Signing With New York Jets originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Josh Reynolds didn't have the best of seasons last year with the Denver Broncos and then the Jacksonville Jaguars as the receiver played what some critics might call so-so football. Advertisement But there was a reason for that, with Reynolds having been the victim of a 2024 shooting in Denver - he sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his left arm and back of his head - maybe he didn't really recover from a football standpoint. Now he's a New York Jet, and after playing for a host of teams throughout his nine-year career, the Big Apple is his next stop. And as OTAs continue for Aaron Glenn's team, Reynolds revealed why he chose the AFC East franchise as his next stop. "I think the biggest thing was Coach Glenn," Reynolds said. "I knew what kind of coach, what kind of person he was, I knew what kind of culture he was going to bring here and I knew I'd fit well with the Jets. So, I was like, 'Yeah, I think that would be a good situation.' I was excited to be a part of it." Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports With Reynolds playing three seasons with the Lions, most of which were with both Glenn and his Jets offensive coordinator, Tanner Engstrand, it is easy to see why Josh made the choice he did. Advertisement Familiarity is key in the NFL, and for a veteran who is perhaps looking to prove a couple of people wrong and help this franchise navigate these troubled seasons, New York feels like the right spot. Last year, Reynolds was only able to play in nine games. He had 13 receptions for 194 yards and one touchdown in his time with Denver and Jacksonville. "Life is precious for sure," Reynolds said. "The more you have to think about it, the more you have to kind of relive it. So, I've moved past it. I'm here in Jersey and ready to get going." So much is unknown about New York in 2025, with many seeing tough times ahead for Glenn and Co., but in Reynolds, the Jets locker room has a point of contact when it comes to what to expect from this new regime. Advertisement And that might be an underrated aspect of Reynolds being a Jet in 2025.
