Jordan evacuates 16 children from Gaza for medical treatment
AMMAN, June 11 (Xinhua) -- The Jordan Armed Forces on Wednesday evacuated 16 children from the Gaza Strip to hospitals in Jordan for medical treatment, including 10 cancer patients, according to a military statement. The children were accompanied by 48 family members as part of a new group under the Jordanian Medical Corridor initiative. Four children were airlifted aboard Royal Jordanian Air Force helicopters to Marka Military Airport in Amman, with specialized medical teams on board, the statement said. The remaining 12 were transported by ambulance across the King Hussein Bridge. One child will be transferred to Saudi Arabia and another to the United Arab Emirates for further treatment. The evacuation was carried out in coordination with Jordan's Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization. During a visit to the United States in February, Jordanian King Abdullah II announced his country's readiness to receive up to 2,000 Palestinian children for medical care. Since the launch of the initiative in March, Jordan has evacuated a total of 57 children and 113 accompanying relatives from Gaza.
