Rally can proceed but must steer clear of 3R issues: Police
Published on: Friday, June 20, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 20, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: ACP Kasim advised that the rally be conducted peacefully and orderly, without provocation or disturbance to public order. Kota Kinabalu: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will not obstruct the planned Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 peaceful rally scheduled for this Saturday. However, organisers have been reminded to steer clear of sensitive issues involving race, religion and royalty (3R). Advertisement Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief, ACP Kasim Muda, in a response letter to the organisers, advised that the rally be conducted peacefully and orderly, without provocation or disturbance to public order. Meanwhile, the organisers, a group known as Suara Mahasiswa UMS, described the police's response this time as 'unprecedented'. 'It should be normalised as a sign of respect towards the right to assemble and express, as guaranteed under the Federal Constitution,' the group stated. The rally is expected to begin at 1pm in front of Suria Sabah shopping mall, with participants marching to Lintasan Deasoka, Gaya Street, and continuing the demonstration through Sunday. Advertisement Organisers are maintaining their demands, including firm action on the Sabah Water Department scandal, institutional reforms and suspension of individuals accused of corruption. Meanwhile, members of the public are advised to plan their journeys in advance tomorrow (June 21) due to temporary road closures in the city centre in conjunction with the 74th Official Birthday Celebration of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri. Kasim said several key roads would be closed from 5am to 10am to accommodate the official parade involving 80 contingents and estimated 10,000 participants at Padang Merdeka. 'The closures will affect five main routes leading to Padang Merdeka, namely Bulatan Bunga Raya, Bulatan Capital (Bandaran), Simpang Tiga Bukit Bendera, Jalan Dewan, and the Jalan Padang junction near KFC Bandaran,' he said in a statement. As a result, the KK Bypass will serve as the primary route for vehicles transporting parade participants, ministers, department heads and other invited guests. The full parade will begin along Jalan Dewan and Jalan Istana and end at Padang Merdeka, while Jalan Padang will serve as the designated parking area for official vehicles. The police also urged the public not to park their vehicles along the parade routes to prevent congestion and ensure the smooth flow of the event. 'We truly appreciate the cooperation and patience of the public to ensure the safety and success of this meaningful celebration,' Kasim added. For further enquiries, the public may contact the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, Kota Kinabalu District Police Headquarters at 088-529288. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Its Kepayan chief, Michelle Chin said many young voters have not changed their polling centre details due to the limited weekday operating hours of the Election Commission (SPR) counters. The mobile counter will be set up at DJ Cafe, Rumah Murah Kepayan, Penampang from 8.00am to 12.00pm. Services include checking and updating voter details, changing localities, and voter registration. Pahang NGO chips in with school supplies: 58pc of Stella Maris students comprise Muslims
Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Dennison and Zamri handing out the school supplies. Kota Kinabalu: Some 340 students from the B40 group at Stella Maris Tanjung Aru received school supplies, recently, thanks to a corporate social responsibility initiative by Yayasan Kosma in collaboration with Persatuan Keusahawanan Cekap Sabah (PKCS). The contribution included school bags, exercise books, stationery and lunch boxes aimed at easing the burden of low-income families. Advertisement Yayasan Kosma Chairman, Dato' Zamri Mohamed, expressed his appreciation for the unity displayed at the event, which took place on the grounds of a church. 'This programme is a wonderful initiative. I witnessed strong unity and harmony among those involved, regardless of race or religion,' said Zamri. 'I was surprised to learn that 58pc of students here at Stella Maris are from Muslim families.' 'This shows we can share a meal together without politics, only unity. I'm very pleased with what we're doing here in Sabah. 'For Yayasan Kosma, our goal is to help everyone. There are no divisions between people and today, we are doing this at a church, no less,' he said. Advertisement Zamri also noted that although Kosma is based in Pahang, the foundation is committed to fulfilling the wider mission of the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) by helping communities across Malaysia. 'Kosma allocates approximately RM5 million annually to support initiatives like these throughout the country, using funds derived from tax contributions. 'LHDN cannot meet every request alone, they get thousands of requests daily and that's why they work with foundations like ours. We aim to ensure states like Sabah, Sarawak, Perlis and Johor all receive equal attention,' he added. Zamri also commended the leadership of the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, for his hands-on approach and visible impact in empowering cooperatives and community initiatives nationwide. PKCS Chairman, Dennison Indang, highlighted the unique challenges of poverty in urban areas like Tanjung Aru, where he said the B40 rate is high compared to others. 'In Pulau Gaya, for instance, over 95pc of households are in the B40 category. Urban poverty is more complex and persistent. Education is the most effective tool we have to end this cycle. 'When families struggle financially, dropout rates increase. Our goal is to break that cycle and motivate students. 'I myself am a product of such initiatives. I know how impactful they can be,' he explained. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
