AI is changing the tech job market, and Gen Z is struggling to keep up

As my daughter can attest, it's a tough job market out there. She's a mechanical engineer, which seems steady demand-wise. But many of her college friends are struggling to find that crucial entry-level job or internship. Some are wondering if computer science and similar courses were the right decision, with AI automating software tasks at companies. Just look at what's happening at Amazon. CEO Andy Jassy said this week that his corporate workforce will shrink over the next few years as the company uses more generative AI tools and agents. Not so coincidentally, Business Insider just spent weeks interviewing Gen Z tech job seekers as AI transforms early-career experiences across the industry. Our findings are a must-read for anyone looking to break in here and find success. Jonathan, a 26-year-old software engineer, is emblematic of what we discovered. (He's not authorized to speak to the media, so we removed his last name.) After earning his degree in 2022, he sent out nearly 300 applications and got 12 responses. It took three months to land a full-time tech role. Less than a year later, he lost that job due to his employer shutting an office. Then, he found himself repeating the process, this time applying to 600 jobs and hearing back from only five. "Everyone tells you to get into computer science. That's where all the money is at, that's where the jobs are at," Jonathan told BI. "It's a lot harder than they make it out to be." He's not alone. Recent computer science grads face a 6.1% unemployment rate in the US, higher than the national average. Wow. I never thought I'd see a stat like that. Jonathan now works in defense tech, not the video game industry he originally aspired to join. Like many of his peers, he's focused on gaining experience — any experience. It's looking like a tech career is evolving from a sure thing into something similar to every other type of job: You have to hustle and network to get your foot in the door, and then work like hell to stay employed and build steadily from there. What else should you do as an aspiring tech worker? Our Gen Z survey story doesn't have all the answers, but there's great advice in here.

The Slutty Little Glasses Trend Is Taking Over Summer

When the trailer was released for Jonathan Bailey's new movie, Jurassic World Rebirth, fans could not stop talking about his character's appearance, particularly the frames sitting upon his face. He kept the conversation going when he wore these shades on Tuesday at the world premiere of the sci-fi action film at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London, England. Well, it turns out there's a trendy name for this eyewear: slutty little glasses. Yep, you read that right. During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight at the premiere, Jonathan was asked, "What do you think of fans' reactions to your slutty little glasses?" Jonathan responded, "Slutty little glasses? Are you allowed to say the 'S' word?" "Listen, Blakely Thornton came up with that. So, copyright, where copyright is due." Jonathan was referring to Blakely, the internet personality who describes himself as a "pop culture anthropologist." He coined the term "sluttly little glasses" and even created an Instagram page dedicated to sharing images and videos of men wearing them. The term typically (but not exclusively) refers to trendy thin, wire-frame glasses that give the person wearing them personality. The social media page was filled with a range of male heartthrobs like Pedro Pascal, Ryan Coogler, Chris Evans, Keith Powers, Eric Dane, Jonathan, of course, and more. "I'm thrilled that people having a hormonal explosion linked to optical support," Jonathan continued. "But, I think, yeah, glasses can go a long way. So, let's have the summer of slutty little glasses." But that wasn't the only thing he was hoping to see more of this season. Jonathan is also a big supporter of flip-flops and hats, noting he wears "a cap every day of the year." "I believe feeling confident, feeling cool, is about wearing what you love. I'll just wear my little glasses." Amen! I'm a big fan of the glasses trend, whether you wear them out of necessity or fashion. Others seem to be onboard with the slutty little glasses movement too: For more of Jonathan, you can watch his full Entertainment Tonight interview below. You can also find him and the rest of the cast in Jurassic World Rebirth when it hits theaters on July 2. What are your thoughts on this? Share them with me in the comments! Jonathan Bailey: I've unlearned the idea of feeling limited

Jonathan Bailey has "unlearned the idea of feeling limited" as a gay actor in Hollywood. The 37-year-old star has enjoyed huge success in recent years, appearing in the Wicked film and Bridgerton, the hit Netflix series - but Jonathan has been forced to overcome some significant challenges during his time in the entertainment industry. He told The Hollywood Reporter: "You have to unlearn a lot of narratives about yourself that an industry tells you." Despite this, Jonathan admits that the landscape is changing in Hollywood. The actor explained: "Being an out gay actor, historically, meant that you wouldn't be able to play straight and there weren't any gay parts to play, anyway. That's obviously changed, massively." Jonathan observed that other, older actors and actresses have helped to break down barriers within the film industry. And Jonathan is now determined to continue to challenge stereotypes in his career, including playing a starring role in Jurassic World Rebirth. He said: "There's moments where, yes, you have to be excellent to prove that you can do it. And it's not like I haven't felt that. There's the weight of history. And there's endless brilliant people who have come before you who have changed the way that people see sexuality. "Any sort of sense of prejudice against sexuality is something to fight against, and what better way to do that than to go and play any kind of character." Jonathan admits that his outlook has changed during his time in the industry. The movie star - who began his career as a child actor in Royal Shakespeare Company productions in the UK - reflected: "I've unlearned the idea of feeling limited." Meanwhile, Jonathan recently revealed that he would find it "hard to say no" if he was asked to be the next James Bond. The actor is one of several stars to have been linked to the coveted role, after Daniel Craig previously bowed out with 2021's No Time To Die, but Jonathan is "not sure" if he would say yes to the role. Asked on The Scott Mills Breakfast Show on Radio 2 if he would "want" to be Bond, Jonathan replied: "I don't ... I am not sure ... I don't know. "I really, honestly, I mean ... it would be hard to say no." However, the actor - who starred alongside Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the Wicked movie - believes the next Bond film will be "exciting" regardless of who is cast in the lead role. He said: "I know that it's going to be exciting whatever they do."
