America's longest-running TV evangelist, Jimmy Swaggart, in critical condition after cardiac episode
The family of prominent televangelist the Rev. Jimmy Swaggart said he remains hospitalized in critical condition after suffering a cardiac arrest. During a Sunday service, Swaggart's son, the Rev. Donnie Swaggart, asked the congregation to keep his father in their prayers, saying that only a "miracle" could extend his father's life. "On this Father's Day, we urgently ask you to pray for Brother Swaggart. He needs a miracle from heaven right now, this morning. We must have the Lord intervene in this situation, and we need your prayers," Donnie Swaggart wrote in a post on his father's Facebook page. "He's my rock and my hero and he needs the Lord's healing power today. If I am able to get away, I will try to be at the service to give everyone an update," Donnie Swaggart wrote in another post. The Rev. Jimmy Swaggart has preached the gospel of Jesus Christ on television longer than any other American evangelist in history, according to his ministry website. Swaggart, who was born on March 15, 1935, in Ferriday, Louisiana, launched into full-time ministry in 1955. He serves as the pastor of the Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and is the founder of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. At his peak in the mid-1980s, Swaggart was the country's top-rated TV preacher. His services were broadcast to over 2 million households. However, his image was bruised after he was linked to a 1987 scandal involving a prostitute that he met in a seedy New Orleans motel. Swaggart never confessed to anything more than an unspecified sin during a televised apology in which he tearfully delivered his "I have sinned speech." A few years later, he was stopped by police while driving in California with a suspected prostitute in his car. Swaggart also made headlines for saying in a televised worship service that he would kill any gay man who looked at him romantically. Swaggart said he made the comment jokingly and did not mean any harm. Fox News Digital reached out to Swaggart's representatives for comment but did not immediately receive a response. Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart hospitalized in critical condition
Prominent evangelist Rev. Jimmy Swaggart, 90, was hospitalized in critical condition after suffering a cardiac arrest on June 15, family members said during a Sunday service. Pastor Donnie Swaggart said during a prayer service June 15 that his father was found at his home around 8 a.m. and revived before being taken to a local hospital, saying that only a 'miracle' could extend his father's life. 'He never regained consciousness,' he said. 'I've never seen so many people arrive at one time, and I want to thank them. They were able to get a heartbeat back. Right now, he is in the ICU, and without a miracle, his time will be short. But we believe God − we're not giving up.' Jimmy Swaggart, a prominent evangelist for decades, is a native of Ferriday, Louisiana, and serves as the pastor of the Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. During the peak of his exposure in the 1980s, Swaggart became involved in various prostitution scandals that led to his suspension and defrocking. The scandals peaked in 1988 when Swaggart delivered his infamous "I have sinned" speech on live television. Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, 90, in critical condition as family braces for worst: ‘Without a miracle, his time is short'
Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart is in intensive care following a heart attack and may not survive, according to his son. 'Without a miracle, his time is short,' son Donnie Swaggart, who preaches from the same pulpit as his ailing 90-year-old father, said during a service Sunday. The full extent of the pastor's illness was not immediately clear. 3 Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart is in intensive care following a heart attack, according to his family. Facebook / Jimmy Swaggart 3 Swaggart's son said his dad may not survive. Facebook / Jimmy Swaggart Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene after the scandal-plagued preacher went into cardiac arrest, family publicist Megan Kelly said and praised them for their efforts. 'Ambulances were able to respond very quickly. They gave him CPR, they took turns doing it, and you can imagine how emotional that was and how stressful that was in that moment,' she said. There were no updates since his condition was first announced, Jimmy Swaggart Ministries said in a statement Monday. 'We ask that you continue to lift him up in prayer and believe God for a miracle — but above all, we trust in the Lord's perfect will,' the ministry said, adding that it would continue to post updates on their Facebook page. Swaggart was defrocked by the Assemblies of God in 1988 after a sex scandal, when rival televangelist Marvin Gorman publicized photos of him with a local prostitute at a Baton Rouge, La., motel. That February, he gave a tearful on-air apology for his actions, famously stating, 'I have sinned.' 3 'Without a miracle, his time is short,' said Donnie Swaggart, who preaches from the same pulpit as his ailing 90-year-old father. Facebook / Jimmy Swaggart He weathered the controversy, and his TV audience grew to 800,000 viewers over the next few years. However, in 1991, he was pulled over in a traffic stop and found to be in the company of another prostitute, leading to several of his contracts being canceled. Despite this, Swaggart kept preaching independently, opening the SonLife Broadcasting Network in 2010, an international Christian TV network that aired both live and prerecorded programs.
